Is it the norm for mums to look mortified when women change in the female changing room?

I joined a fitness club this month and have using the gym. The club has a pool/sauna etc, the usual stuff, gym and classes. There are male, female and family changing facilities which you use whatever activity. The club does family swim times.

Today I went to the gym and had a shower/got changed after work when the family swim time was on. I was in the female changing room and a few women were getting changed naked etc, not prancing around showing off, I just mean boobs/fanjo out when changing.

I noticed a few of the mums looking mortified and getting their children to look the other way and even heard one "tut". Is this normal? I don't mean they should let their kids stand and stare which would be weird, but the mums looked very uncomfortable to the point it appeared the women getting changed in the nude was wrong.

Is this the normal?

Thanks.

What do people think the age cut off should be for having male children in changing rooms? 8th birthday. DS was in the men's alone at 6, I waited outside within earshot.

@TheAwfuITruth

I've been tutted at in the past.

Honestly, it's like no one's ever seen a woman with her foot up on the bench, drying her muff with the hairdryer before...

🤣🤣🤣
grasstreeleaf · 20/07/2021 18:48

If anyone is interested, how to get changed without showing much. If you've a space on a bench it's easy enough. Towel round the shoulder & covering your front to slip down costume straps, dry and get into bra. Sit down on towel and fold other end over your lap like a skirt to take off bottom of costume, dry and put knickers on.

optimistic40 · 20/07/2021 18:49

Hope it's not the norm! No, i would not cover my children's eyes from a naked woman. I might however discourage the child from staring and / or commenting to avoid any embarrassment for me if my child booms out comments.

ShortBacknSides · 20/07/2021 18:50

Those tutting are unreasonable. Don't give it another thought.

It's ridiculous to have to do this stupid dance in a womans changing room

For me, although not familiar with nudity in changing areas, it does seem far easier to just put your bra and pants on having showed a a few seconds of nudity that no one cares/wouldn't look at then wresting with a towel which would actually take longer and probably draw more attention.

Haven't seen any fanjo blow drying but one lady at my gym did decide to blow dry her hair (head hair) wearing just a g string. Not even a bra. Tits flapping and everything. I mean, why??

Because otherwise I'd be dripping with sweat and need another shower and change of clothes. I don't generally wear a thong but I don't find them offensive, it's not like bottoms are outrageous or anything Confused

MarshaBradyo · 20/07/2021 18:55

Female bodies are just that a body

Nothing for children to get upset about

Plus how do you get changed in common area without getting naked

I suppose you could do the towel thing but why should you it’s a changing room

Londoncatshed · 20/07/2021 18:55

@TheAwfuITruth 😭🤣

Rosewaterblossom · 20/07/2021 18:56

I Will feel OK now thanks to this thread to get changed without thinking I'm doing something wrong because there are mums with their kids present. I am a mum myself but I don't think my teenagers would want to see me naked in any setting 😆

I wasn't commenting on the thong being offensive, it was more the tits whilst blow drying. I understand the need to be cool whilst drying hair but put a bra on?!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 20/07/2021 18:59

tits out

SleepingStandingUp · 20/07/2021 18:59

So were you in the family changing room or the family one? I wouldn't get naked in family because i wouldn't potentially want to be naked in front of Dads and i wouldn't want them stripping off either

HavelockVetinari · 20/07/2021 19:01

Bra + hairdryer = sweat. My boobs are small but still produce sweat, I'd rather not get a clean bra all sweaty because another woman dislikes the sight of boobs. They're even more inoffensive than bottoms!

Female changing room

I feel this too. Paying a lot of money for a naice gym to basically feel very uncomfortable getting changed etc because of the sheer amount of older kids with mums in there. Tiny ones - under 3s - it’s fine, and I’ve even helped entertain whilst their mum gets dressed themselves, but there are 8/9/10 yo boys in there sometimes and I have heard laughing etc about certain women doing things (‘look at that ladies boobs!’) nothing vicious or anything but it’s like, a lot of money is spent on having a nice experience at these places! You shouldn’t feel like you’re indecently exposing yourself to young boys or something! There is a good argument for totally separate family rooms to exist. Shower, toilet, sink, changing benches, with lockers etc and you just have a key to the whole room if you’re taking multiple kids of different ages swimming.

Rosewaterblossom · 20/07/2021 19:03

Boobs just aren't offensive whatsoever are they!

@TheAwfuITruth

That's a joke from a comedian, only he said pubes. I can't remember which one. That's going to annoy me now.

I just realised I’ve never encountered this

Nice expensive gym no children were allowed

Not expensive local swimming pools family changing separate cubicles

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 20/07/2021 19:06

Ahhhh maybe I'm just an old prude 😂 I don't find boobs offensive. I just don't see the need for the prolonged exposure!

Grin

That's so excellent

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 20/07/2021 19:09

@Blueeyedgirl21 my gym has a separate family changing room. But some mums insist on taking older boys in there. There should definitely be an age limit. Or just take all kids into family changing because that's what it's for.

uktrippin · 20/07/2021 19:10

They were probably tutting at the kid.

I've never been to family swimming without tutting lots afterwards

HaveringWavering · 20/07/2021 19:11

I usually dry my hair in the communal changing room at the gym with towel round my waist and bare top ie tits out. The reason so that I don’t want my wet hair dripping on my bra, and also I tend to still feel quite hit and sweaty after a workout even after a shower, and the hot air from the dryer exacerbates that, so I want to keep my bra off as long as possible till my body temp has settled down a bit, otherwise it just gets all sweaty. It’s never crossed my mind to put my boobs away in a female changing room for reasons of courtesy to other women. (I don’t really minimise time with bottoms off either, to be honest, though would not sit on a seat with a naked bottom half and no towel under me.) The only thing I’d draw the line at would be displaying my fanjo with legs wide open.
