Do you keep your windows open at night?

I’ve never dared do this due to security concerns… but I am so hot tonight I am considering taking the risk. Anyone else? Am I silly to worry?

Yes. Upstairs ones anyway.

DappledThings · 18/07/2021 22:59

Daytime, night time, all the time. Only close them if we are actually staying away over night. Have to close DC's at night or if they are playing upstairs because they are fire escape ones onto the roof and they are too young to be trusted not to climb out but upstairs ones are otherwise open most of the time.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/07/2021 23:00

Yes, the upstairs one.

AnnaSW1 · 18/07/2021 23:00

Nope!

DisgruntledPelican · 18/07/2021 23:00

Yes, always. When I lived in a ground floor flat I had window locks that would lock open a few inches, enough to get some air circulating, and I occasionally had the windows open all night when it was baking hot.

cheezy · 18/07/2021 23:01

I can’t sleep with the window closed - I don’t know how anyone can!!
Mine are open in the depth of winter.

RancidOldHag · 18/07/2021 23:01

Yes, we have ventilation bolts on them, so you can leave them open a certain amount, but you'd have to break them to move them further.

alexdgr8 · 18/07/2021 23:01

you can get lockable and removable grids that go over windows, to stop people falling out.
re the fire escape also, could you get it alarmed for extra security.

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/07/2021 23:02

Bedroom ones are always open but they're on the 2nd floor and it'd be difficult to climb in.

MotionActivatedDog · 18/07/2021 23:02

My bedroom window is only closed on very cold days/nights in winter. But always opened at least some of those days too.

Pascha · 18/07/2021 23:04

I do at this time of year, except any my cats could climb in. Don't fancy being woken by shrieks from children with dead, (or worse, alive but maimed), rodents on their beds...

Anyhow, I'm still out in the garden with all the lights off - - mumsnetting-- looking at the stars with cup of tea in hand. The back door and all the relevant upstairs windows are open a bit. Everyone including dh is asleep.

FeelingLikeAnAlien · 18/07/2021 23:04

Interesting, seems most do without a thought. Good to know you can get ventilation bolts, it’s literally just once a year I need them though! Usually have windows cracked in the day time but always closed at night. I’m almost too hot to care much about the lurking burglars tonight Blush.

Yes. Ds2 (14) is sleeping on a sun lounger on my balcony tonight!

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/07/2021 23:05

We do live rurally though

shewalkslikerihanna · 18/07/2021 23:06

No way
Can’t bear flying biting insects
And we live in a bungalow

FizziWater · 18/07/2021 23:09

Always but my bedroom is in the roof so if I open the window too far a cat will jump in, either mine or the neighbours.Grin

Livpool · 18/07/2021 23:10

No but we live on a main road that is loud night and day

TinaYouFatLard · 18/07/2021 23:10

Yes. All year round.

Smokeahontas · 18/07/2021 23:12

Downstairs are only open during the day. Upstairs back & bathroom only open an inch but remain open, front bedroom open all the time in spring / summer.

Breathmiller · 18/07/2021 23:16

What do you all do about flying things?
We live on a farm and get bats. Usually at least one a year makes its way in through the chimney or a hole somewhere.

I am terrified of flying things inside. I literally cannot be in a room with anything of a half decent size flying about.

We get huge moths, you know the big buggers with big bodies. I could not sleep with them around. We had one a couple pf weeks ago and it woke me up banging on the inside of the window. I ran out the room in a panic and slept in with ds.

So, do you just happily sleep with these things flying around?

We don't have curtains which probably doesn't help.

I am so hot upstairs tonight but just cannot bear the thought of opening a window.
I'm not generally a wuss about things but this just sends me into a total flap.

youngestisapsycho · 18/07/2021 23:16

Upstairs windows are always open.

MrsBungle · 18/07/2021 23:19

Upstairs windows are never shut! Down stairs I do close before bed. I couldn’t sleep in a room with the window closed.

NotMyCat · 18/07/2021 23:21

Nope, ground floor apartment. They're set to be cracked open and I've opened the air vents but it doesn't do much!

isettled · 18/07/2021 23:21

Out bedroom windows are never closed. In this hot weather I've got all the upper windows open on the latch and locked for a bit of through draught and they stay open All day every day.

ParkheadParadise · 18/07/2021 23:23

Upstairs windows are open 24/7 only time they're closed is in winter.
Downstairs are opened first thing in the morning every morning.
