Would you report racism? Re: Savills employee

Following on from the Savills tweets where there employee used a racial slur regarding football last night and then made another tweet about domestic violence.
Would you report it if you saw a family member / friend etc posted something racist publicly? I think i would - i believe we should be actively anti racist not just let it slide past. I would feel slightly guilty but not overly to be honest. I also don't agree with the 'cancel culture' that goes on but people need to be held accountable for their actions!

Definitely.

GetTaeFuck · 12/07/2021 16:10

Yes, because actions have consequences and if they’re brazen enough to spout this bollocks then they’re brazen enough to deal with any punishment handed out.

TheTallOakTrees · 12/07/2021 16:10

I already report any post that is racist or any other form of hate speech. I will continue to do this. Everyone should call it out.

PomegranateQueen · 12/07/2021 16:10

It would be interesting to know how many people really would report in real life. It's so easy to virtue signal when you are anonymous.

Within a week of the Brexit referendum, too many racists came out of the woodwork within my friends list. One woman I knew from school made a racist joke on her page about people buying suitcases and I pointed out that Pakistan was never part of the EU, called her an idiot and blocked her. Prior to that her page was just pictures of her cute young toddler so I'm afraid I couldn't call her (retail) boss and report her, she needs to work somewhere in order to feed, clothe and house her DC.

Noterook · 12/07/2021 16:11

Its so very unlikely that someone would be hacked (repeatedly) by someone just so they could post racist and offensive tweets. Even on the lowest security settings most social media platforms now say there has been a log on attempt please confirm its you or whatever, and it's unlikely he wouldn't have noticed. It's just a cowardly way to try and wriggle out of taking responsibility for one's actions, pathetic.

Cookofcastamar · 12/07/2021 16:13

@audweb I said similar to DH last night especially as all 3 are either black or mixed race. DH was shocked when I said it, I was shocked for thinking that way but unfortunately I was proven right. Disgusting!

As a black woman i find your apathy and turning a blind eye just as bad. FYI.
toocold54 · 12/07/2021 16:14

I didn’t see the tweet but I absolutely would report a family member or friend (and remove them from my life). It’s one thing to think these things but to put it on SM for the intention of everyone seeing is beyond disgusting and actually dangerous that these people believe they are above the law and more superior than others, let alone it could influence behaviour and make other people believe it too.

ClawedButler · 12/07/2021 16:15

The tweet's been taken down now of course, but could someone tell me what it said (not the DV "joke" or whatever the hell he thought that was)? You can paraphrase if you don't want to use the words of a racist scumbag.

Youdiditanyway · 12/07/2021 16:15

Yep and I wouldn’t care whether they had dependents or not. Racists need calling out and deserve to lose their livelihoods.

Frymetothemoon · 12/07/2021 16:16

Would do and have done in the past.

PomegranateQueen · 12/07/2021 16:16

I didn't turn a blind eye did I?

Allington · 12/07/2021 16:16

I loathe racists, even more since my daughters are black. They have been racially abused and threatened on their way to school. The more racists experience consequences when they spout their filth the better

LuxOlente · 12/07/2021 16:18

Yes, of course. I have very little patience with those who protect revolting people in our society. You can't simultaneously bemoan the police who protected their colleague, resulting in the recent murder, whilst not reporting if, for example, your partner posted such things on social media. It's our collective responsibility to challenge evil where we see it. Maybe not directly, as we all don't want to get stabbed in the face, but privately to ensure there are consequences.

I can genuinely say no one I have on social media has ever posted anything along those lines, honestly. I'm not saying they're all saints and has never uttered a word behind closed doors that's offensive, but i absolutely would report their posts if they decided to take the time to sit and type out something racist and post it on the Internet.

I thought it too! I was begging for them to score not so England could win but so they wouldn’t have their entire race blamed.

I saw a disgusting tweet that 3 N lost the game for us so we need to get them back - then there was a list of things they could do like spit, punch, rape or lynch a N* and how many points each one was worth! Surely this type of post is worth a prison sentence!

I am honestly disgusted and feel ashamed that it’s 2021 and people not only hold these views but are so open about them!!

"The n*** have lost it for England" or very similar. I saw it this morning.

In answer to the OP yes. I've both cut off family members (an aunt who boasted about her son "killing towel heads" in the Iraq war) and reported people from social media.

No. I'd call them out myself though.

What someone posts is their business, not their employers. Their employer is not their parent. And adults don't need to be 'parented'. I don't like all this tittle tattle snitchy cancel culture that we have at the moment.

SapphireSeptember · 12/07/2021 16:25

No I wouldn't, people have the right to freedom of speech, even if we don't like it, that's how women get sacked or arrested for GC views. I would challenge it, but reporting something someone said on social media to their employers is over the top. (Although there's a reason I don't have my social media accounts linked to my job.)

Fluffytheevil1 · 12/07/2021 16:25

The person involved had a back up account where he was also posting racist bile. This wasn’t a one off.
I haven’t reported them though.

RickiTarr · 12/07/2021 16:25

Of course.

Just10moreminutesplease · 12/07/2021 16:25

Absolutely (although I’m a bit of a coward so would probably do so anonymously).

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 12/07/2021 16:26

What someone posts is their business, not their employers.

His profile was "Savills Commercial Manager" (or something - can't remember the exact job title). By doing that, he was representing his employer on the Twitter account.

dreamingbohemian · 12/07/2021 16:27

Every time someone says 'oh but how will that poor racist support their family if they get sacked' I think about all the countless people who lost their jobs for racist reasons, all the people who had to figure out how to support their families because some racist was able to get them sacked. That's where my sympathy lies.
