What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

If a double fits I'd put a double in as it'll last even once they're grown up. If a double won't fit in one room you could get one of those bunk bed desk things as a consolation?

kowari · 05/07/2021 12:06

DS 15yo has a single

LockdownCheeseToastie · 05/07/2021 12:08

Mine got double or king as teenagers. More comfortable for them and can be used by guest couples.

When we moved we got all DC double beds, youngest was 5. They are useful for many reasons.

BunnyRuddington · 05/07/2021 12:08

DD has a single, there's no room for anything else. DS has recently had a Queen as there's not quite enough room for a desk, bookshelves and everything else plus a double.

Bluntness100 · 05/07/2021 12:09

Doubles. Singles are fairly miserable and only if you really can’t fit anything bigger.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 05/07/2021 12:09

Single bunks. They really don't need doubles.

namechange90832 · 05/07/2021 12:09

DS10 has a king (our old frame, room plenty big enough for it so seemed silly to get rid just because king sounds a bit excessive for a 10 year old!) DS7 has a single currently but will upgrade him to a double by the time he's a teenager likely sooner. If the room is big enough no reason not to IMO, much more comfortable. I've had at least a double from about the age of 15.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/07/2021 12:11

Doubles are handy for sleepovers and if guests come to stay.

Also last longer if you expect the DC to be very tall - in order for dh to keep his feet on the bed he has to lie diagonal.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 12:13

Mine have a double, a small double and a single (on descending order of age!).

The small double fits perfectly along the wall behind the door of the box room so that might be an option for your narrow room. It does leave little room for anything else though!

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 12:14

They really don't need doubles.

It's about comfort, not need.

FeistySheep · 05/07/2021 12:16

Wow, I only had one friend with a double bed when I was at high school. Everyone else had singles. Wouldn't dream of getting my DC doubles, unless I just happened to be replacing the bed anyway when they were very close to moving out permanently and I had plans to turn it into a guest room!

Double beds take up loads of useful space in a room - such a waste if only one person is sleeping in it! Wouldn't everyone prefer the extra floor space for games/dancing/yoga etc?

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 05/07/2021 12:17

I got a double when I was about 13, I'm very tall and already was by that age so a single was horrible. If you expect your kids to be tall, please consider getting them doubles if you can fit them, they're so much more comfortable.

Deadleaf29 · 05/07/2021 12:18

Single beds. At the moment the floor space is more useful for playing - mine are considerably younger. At 9 and 11 though, if they fit, I’d buy doubles. Why not?

MargaretThursday · 05/07/2021 12:23

On here every teen seems to have double beds.

In RL I asked my 3 teens and none of their friends have doubles, not even the ones with space.

Of mine, one has a high sleeper, one has a midsleeper, and one is still in his shorty bed, and desperately needs to choose one he's not too big for. Grin He wants a midsleeper.

catmandont · 05/07/2021 12:24

DC went to a small double (4 ft) at about 15.

But more space in the room than a full double, but still big enough to feel ima but more grown up. Double bedding fits fine, you just need the 4 ft fitted sheet, which are easy to find.

CharlieWorkCharlieSad · 05/07/2021 12:25

Single and single bunk beds. No room for double. I'd need a mansion to be able fit everyone in a double bed in their own room 😂

TheTempest · 05/07/2021 12:27

DD 11 now has a double. She inherited it from her big sister DSD who is now 22, when she moved out. I can’t see anything wrong with getting them a double bed, good for sleepovers and she won’t grow out of it 🤷‍♀️

namechange90832 · 05/07/2021 12:28

Seeing as nearly half of the day is spent sleeping id say having a comfortable bed trumps playing space significantly after a certain age, and a double is significantly more comfortable, plus nice for reading and talking with friends etc. We also have other rooms for what you're describing, I've always been a "bedrooms are for sleeping" type, my children tend to play more downstairs and have a snug for themselves too.

spiderlight · 05/07/2021 12:29

Mine got a small double (queen size) when we did a loft conversion and he got a decent-sized room aged 11 (prior to that he'd had a narrow single loft bed in a boxroom). Now that he's 14 and nearly 6 ft, I'm glad we made that decision!

transformandriseup · 05/07/2021 12:30

I had a single bed until I left home at 23 but we have a spare double bed and we are considering giving it to DD as soon as she he grows out of her cot as it seems silly to buy a new bed when we already have a spare one.

I think if you have the space then go for it.

KurtWilde · 05/07/2021 12:31

Doubles

MirandaWest · 05/07/2021 12:32

Mine both have doubles - they’re 17 and 15.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/07/2021 12:34

Currently they both have doubles. They are 8&10. DD1 has a double loft bed do loads of space underneath for her books, clothes, desk and other preteen paraphernalia.
DD2 has a double as her room is also the guest room. She moves in with with DD1 when guests stay.

DD1 had a small double from 7-9.

As for floor space...the bed is a comfy space for reading etc.

daisypond · 05/07/2021 12:37

Single bunkbeds. They shared a room.
