What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

Both of mine 10 and 9 have doubles. Always have done. They quite like hanging out together in theme evenings reading and chatting in bed together and when they were younger I slept with them but could go back to my bed when they dropped off, they never ever came to our bed.

Doubles

MackieMayor · 05/07/2021 18:54

@kowari

How do children in doubles cope if they go to university and have a single in halls, or their room in a share house only fits a single?

I would imagine they just get in with it!

Both of mine have doubles at home, had small doubles in halls and doubles in shared houses.

I had a double as a child/teen.

One has a double, the other two have a set of bunks to share. If I had the space, they’d have whichever they were most comfortable with. As I’ve said before, sleeping arrangements aren’t a superiority contest for me.

Sceptre86 · 05/07/2021 18:59

Mine are only 3 and 5 but have singles. I find that is better because whilst they have good sized rooms they also have their toys in there as we don't have a separate playroom. I wouldn't plan on things like beds for my kids with guests in mind as we have few and far between that are likely to stay overnight.

pointythings · 05/07/2021 19:02

Mine didn't ask for doubles - we offered.

All the competitive single beddery on here sounds a bit like that famous Monty Python sketch... 'When I were a youngster, we didn't have a bed - we had a cardboard box. With holes in. And we were thankful'.

x2boys · 05/07/2021 19:04

My fourteen year old has a small double, his room isn't really big enough for a normal double, it's perfect for him though.

WhereDidIGoNext · 05/07/2021 19:26

Not that many people have 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms big enough for double beds. This will make double beds for all children impossible for an awful lot of people

Where did anyone say that all children had to have a double bed?
SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 19:46

If you have the space and it suits your family, they can have a double bed. If not, they cn have a single or whatever.

WhereDidIGoNext · 05/07/2021 20:01

They didn’t soupdragon

But it's just so much more comfortable to have a bigger bed, especially if you spend time lounging around on it - if you have the space and can afford it why on earth wouldn't you? It's not about kids demanding it - it's just that you generally try and make things as nice and comfy for your kids as possible, don't you? Mine has a sofa in his room too, as it's more than just a place to sleep.
I just don't see a difference, I don't find a double any different to a single, a single is plenty of space for me as a 5ft 5 woman, any extra makes no difference. I understand it would be different if I was a 6ft teen, DS is currently 5ft 6 and I've told him that if his single gets too small I'm happy to swap.

Weird isn't it Grin
KurtWilde · 05/07/2021 20:41

Mine didn't asks for doubles, either. When their beds needed replacing I decided to get them doubles. I can't really see the problem?

CiaoForNiao · 05/07/2021 20:43

Singles. They are 16 and 14. They probably could squeeze doubles into the their bedrooms but then wouldn't have space for desks/lego.

namechange90832 · 05/07/2021 20:43

A double bed is 50% wider, how can that possibly make no difference, unless you get into bed and lie deadly still how can you not possibly understand why a bigger bed is preferable.

A standard seat on a flight is technically sufficient room, but I will damn well take extra leg room if I can get it!

honkytonkheroe · 05/07/2021 20:45

My 10 year old has a double bed. The only reason he does, is when his 26 year old sister and her boyfriend stay, he sleeps in the box room and they have his room (it is the room that used to be my 26 year olds' not so long ago). My 18 year old has a small double (4ft). When I was young we only had single beds and my parents were fairly well off in a fairly large house. It just wasn't a thing. It definitely does seem to be the thing now though but wouldn't really consider more than a small double unless there was a reason I don't think.

There's more than enough space in a single for me to move around, in a double I don't use the extra space, I only use one side where my pillow is. I don't roll over and over like a three month old!

My 4yo has a small double and has done since she was 2

pointythings · 05/07/2021 21:10

For me a larger bed means I have room to move into a cool spot when the hot flushes hit. It's priceless.

Auntienumber8 · 05/07/2021 21:11

We got DS a double when he was 11. I occasionally feel slight jealousy at him having a room all to himself.

Todaytomorrowyesterday · 05/07/2021 21:16

Both kids got a double bed when they turned 11. Older one has enough room. When the younger one turned 11 her room was smaller so we searched for a small double ottoman for storage. It does mean she hasn’t enough room for a desk frustratingly but older one off to uni in Sept so can use the desk in her room.

There's no need to be so rude. I wasn't arguing,
I had only answered this post. But it's just so much more comfortable to have a bigger bed, especially if you spend time lounging around on it - if you have the space and can afford it why on earth wouldn't you? Is is that hard to understand that it is not more comfortable for everyone?

Lineofduty2021 · 05/07/2021 22:05

We moved DD from her cot bed when she was 3, straight into a double bed when we moved house. Her room was plenty big enough and still using the same bed now at 9 with no need to buy another. DS who is 1 has the smaller room so unless we move he will have to have a single as you couldn’t fit anything else in there otherwise.
