What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

Hope that’s not an only on MN thing that my sons are tall🤦‍♀️🤣🤣

mumofthree22 · 05/07/2021 17:48

All my 3 have king size beds but 2 boys are teenagers and tall and daughter loves to stretch out!

tractorkeys · 05/07/2021 17:49

DS 13 has a king size. DD 12 has a double.

My dds have had doubles since they were 11 and 12, we had built bedrooms for them in the loft and needed new beds (as had previously been in single bunks for years) so we decided to get them doubles.
Actually when the eldest was about 2 she went into a double bed as it’s what we already had! She went back into the single bunk bed when she was about 6, she was fine.
Of course they don’t ‘need’ them but they wanted them and are more comfortable, it’s easy when they have a friend come to stay as they tend to just share the bed with them rather than having to faff about making beds up for them.

mynameisbrian · 05/07/2021 17:51

My DD got a double when she was 17. She was mightily pissed off her younger brother got one when he was 13. That was just because we didn’t have a spare room and she didn’t want to give up her bed when guests stayed. She did have a pull out bed under hers which would make a double. We replaced it when it broke . My youngest has a single

How do children in doubles cope if they go to university and have a single in halls, or their room in a share house only fits a single?

In the same way I adapted to living with 5 other adults, it wasn't ideal but was obviously manageable whilst it was the only option, I was back in a double as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

Do you think there is a club of young adults with insomnia due to being introduced to double beds too early?

And if you are not rich?

I just think it odd that single beds are apparently so uncomfortable for some single people (under 6ft), but others use them into adulthood happily. I do think an element of it is simply what you are used to.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/07/2021 18:04

@kowari my dd’s uni room was less than £20 a week for the upgraded room , so not only for the rich.

WhereDidIGoNext · 05/07/2021 18:09

Most adult couples sleep in a double or king which gives each person less room than a single each so I can’t really get too interested in teenagers saying a single bed isn’t big enough for them

RoseMartha · 05/07/2021 18:14

13 and 14 have singles

Floralnomad · 05/07/2021 18:17

Mine all had doubles or king size from about 8/9

kowari · 05/07/2021 18:17

The better off students then. For many students £20 a week is not insignificant.

Tanfastic · 05/07/2021 18:24

Is this a thing now? ds age 13 has a single. Would never have occurred to me to get him a double to be honest.

When dh is snoring, I sometimes get in our single in the spare room and I love a single bed. Mind you when I have the double to myself if he's away I rarely venture into the middle, just stay over my side.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 05/07/2021 18:34

Mine are all teens. One can only fit a small double in their room, one a double and one a king. That’s only happened in the last couple of years. One decided at the age of 17 that they wanted a bigger bad so badly that they sold their bike to pay for it as I wouldn’t!! The others waited until they had their rooms refurbed and we swapped them over as part of that. I also have a small double, but have another one next to it for DP Grin I was going to have two singles side by side until I discovered small double was a thing. Having tried to get amorous in single beds on holiday, I’m glad we don’t have that permanently Grin

So while I don’t think anyone needs a huge bed, singles do seem more like a kids thing, and if they’re having friends round to hang out, a double makes a great place for them all to sit, whereas a single is a bit of a squish.

OhRene · 05/07/2021 18:35

They all have doubles. Easier that way and when they want to bed hop and snuggle in with big sister etc it's not a bother. It's also handy when we have guests as the kids just vacate a room and there's a suitable bed available.

This is true! I hated sharing even a king with DP as he’s a fidget and I realised that even two singles wouldn’t have lost me any space especially as he would take up 4 of the 6 feet!
MarkRuffaloCrumble · 05/07/2021 18:39

But I think the length can be as much of an issue as the width - my XH hates staying at my house when I’m away as apparently my bed is too short and his feet hang off the end 😂

@MyDcAreMarvel
Of course it not a trick question!
There was no paying extra for a double room at my uni. There weren't any double rooms Grin
Our rooms were bloody small too!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/07/2021 18:43

On the uni subject, my ds was in halls on the cheapest deal and every room had a 4ft bed in it. Apparently students don't like having singles!

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 05/07/2021 18:44

But it's just so much more comfortable to have a bigger bed, especially if you spend time lounging around on it - if you have the space and can afford it why on earth wouldn't you? It's not about kids demanding it - it's just that you generally try and make things as nice and comfy for your kids as possible, don't you? Mine has a sofa in his room too, as it's more than just a place to sleep.

ForkedIt · 05/07/2021 18:45

If we are going to play this game then technically my 1 year old has a super king Grin

Triceratopsmama · 05/07/2021 18:46

My 5 year old has a double bed. We bought it when he outgrew his toddler bed. He loves it.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 18:47

Small doubles - bugger to get bottom sheets for (dunelm very limited) and just use a double duvet.

I just use a double flat sheet for DS's small double.
