What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

The handy thing about my older ones having doubles was when they moved out they already had a nice bed for their new place.

My younger ones love their doubles, especially good for sleepovers. Of which we have many 😂

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 05/07/2021 15:35

DD (13) has a single but also has a sofa bed for sleepovers. DS (11) has a high single with drawers but doesn’t have space for a double.

pointythings · 05/07/2021 15:50

Mine got doubles when they were 12 and 10 and we were replacing their beds/moving DD1 into a bigger room. We had the space, it was a no-brainer.

They're both at uni now but the doubles come in handy when they are here and/or any of us have people over.

I don't understand why a tall child needs a double rather than a single. The beds are the same length Confused

We all have singles here, 6'2 DH, 5'9 me, 5'2 11 year old and the tiny 4'6 9 year old. No intention of replacing them any time soon. Kids need their Lego space.

The diagonal on a double is longer than its length. Geometry works.

I'm single and I sleep in a double. Never going back to a single.
DD1 has only had a single in her first year in Halls, double in second year and will again in third year. DD1 starts in September and will have a double in halls.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/07/2021 15:59

Younger kids single , teens got doubles at 13/14.

AledsiPad · 05/07/2021 16:05

DC1 is 14 and as tall as DH. He has a double because a single would be incredibly uncomfortable for him (I bet none of the people telling you how no teenager needs a double wouldn't sleep in a single every night...)

Other DC have loft beds, and DS2 (13) is getting a double over the summer holidays. He's not quite had the growth spurt DS1 has had so we've got away with a single so far.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 05/07/2021 16:33

(I bet none of the people telling you how no teenager needs a double wouldn't sleep in a single every night...)

I slept in a single bed for 3 years while I was at university. When I was in my first year the 6 foot plus boy in the flat opposite mine and the weightlifting boy in the flat next to his slept in the same standard issue small single that I did. I also spent 3 weeks sharing a single bed with my then boyfriend while we stayed with friends and managed to survive the experience. There may be some people who are so tall that they need to sleep diagonally across a double bed (but then what do they do when they have a partner in there with them?) but I don’t know many people who are physically too big for a single bed.

blahblahblah321 · 05/07/2021 16:36

Small doubles - bugger to get bottom sheets for (dunelm very limited) and just use a double duvet.

DS1 got his aged about 13 as we were decorating his room.
DS2 got his younger, at 11, as he desperately needed a new bed and we didn't want to buy a single to then have him moaning in a few years that he wants the same as his brother.

blahblahblah321 · 05/07/2021 16:38

@FeistySheep

Wow, I only had one friend with a double bed when I was at high school. Everyone else had singles. Wouldn't dream of getting my DC doubles, unless I just happened to be replacing the bed anyway when they were very close to moving out permanently and I had plans to turn it into a guest room!

Double beds take up loads of useful space in a room - such a waste if only one person is sleeping in it! Wouldn't everyone prefer the extra floor space for games/dancing/yoga etc?

I suppose it depends what your child wants from their bedroom?! My sons like lying on their beds on their phones/reading/playing on the Xbox, so a comfy bigger bed is ideal - they aren't bothered about floor space
Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 05/07/2021 16:39

Both have doubles.

Maddiemademe · 05/07/2021 16:39

My 10 year old DS has a double bed but then he has a very large bedroom. 6 year old DD has a single but a midi sleeper to put a desk and toys underneath. When she is older as has a small double bedroom I will probably look at getting a high double bed so she can still have storage space.

Gertie75 · 05/07/2021 16:39

My dd's are still young so have singles because they use the floor space for dancing and playing, when they're older I'll get them doubles.

noscoobydoodle · 05/07/2021 16:41

My 17 month old has a double bed- which also doubles up as the guest bed. My older two both have single beds. DC3 will get a single bed when we rejig the rooms and have a separate office/spare room (with sofa bed). One of the older ones will get the double then (as they won't be sharing so whoever has the bigger room). I had a single bed until I was a teen and my bed needed replacing then I got a double. I'm not very tall though and can happily sleep in a single bed now. In fact I would get more space as my DH is very tall and a diagonal sleeper!

RuthW · 05/07/2021 16:45

My dd has just got a small double. She's 24. I had my first when got married. Space to play and store things is more important

Itstheprinciple · 05/07/2021 16:53

We did up DD'S bedroom last year when she was 13. She wanted to get rid of her high sleeper so we decided on a double as her room can then be used as a guest room, also we got one with storage underneath which has been so useful. When she's in her room, she's lounging on the bed anyway watching stuff on her lap top so it might as well be comfortable. It isn't in the middle of the room though, it is against a wall to give her more floor space.

LittleLottieChaos · 05/07/2021 16:58

@HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst I won’t bemoan a grown adult getting whatever bed they want. shrugs I don’t think small children should be demanding double beds.

wildthingsinthenight · 05/07/2021 17:00

DS 12 has just got a double bed. It's a John Lewis Any Day one and we're very happy with it

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/07/2021 17:06

DS2 had a double bed from.the age of about 10, and got kicked out of it whenever we had guests staying.

DS1 had a midi sleeper until about the age of 12 when he outgrew it, and we bought him a standard double. His room was big enough and he was clearly going to be tall so it made sense.

WhereDidIGoNext · 05/07/2021 17:15

@MargaretThursday

On here every teen seems to have double beds.

In RL I asked my 3 teens and none of their friends have doubles, not even the ones with space.

Of mine, one has a high sleeper, one has a midsleeper, and one is still in his shorty bed, and desperately needs to choose one he's not too big for. Grin He wants a midsleeper.

This! Everyone I know has a single
fitflopqueen · 05/07/2021 17:32

My younger son had a new 3'6" bed at age 14, still in it 10 yrs later, has been offered to change rooms so can have a double but isn't bothered. Hoping that he will fly out of the nest later this year. Has done uni etc and come home to work for now.

kowari · 05/07/2021 17:35

How do children in doubles cope if they go to university and have a single in halls, or their room in a share house only fits a single?

kowari · 05/07/2021 17:44

(I bet none of the people telling you how no teenager needs a double wouldn't sleep in a single every night...)
I slept in a single as an adult before having DS. I still find them perfectly comfortable. I have a double now so I can vacate it for the camp bed if I have two people stay over, just gives more sleeping spaces.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/07/2021 17:45

@kowari How do children in doubles cope if they go to university and have a single in halls, or their room in a share house only fits a single? you pay the extra for a larger room, is that a trick question?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 05/07/2021 17:46

I will add though, my boys are giants and even in double beds tend to sleep diagonally so do struggle a bit in singles
