What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

Got a double for DC aged 13. He was 6 4". I can't sleep in a single at 5 11" so I wouldn't expect my DC to.

TeenMinusTests · 05/07/2021 13:59

Singles.
Think of the laundry - double the volume with a double than a single.

2tired2bewitty · 05/07/2021 14:03

Blimey 6’2 DH and I share a standard double with no issues, and he’s not a skinny chap either.

5 year old ds is still in a toddler bed so I think I may be doing this all wrong!

This is just bizarre. A double bed is designed for two adults to sleep together in. A single bed is for a single individual, a child (unless gargantuan) doesn’t need a double bed to themselves.
I'm a single woman, should I be in a single bed then?

I have room for doubles in my DCs rooms so that's what they have 🤷🏻‍♀️

My 2 year old has a long

I have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old and they have 3/4 size double beds.

motogogo · 05/07/2021 14:06

Mine had singles (split up bunk beds) until I needed to replace so had doubles then, older teens

Brokenrecord3006 · 05/07/2021 14:06

My 3 year old has a double. Didn't want to throw out a decent bed and we can pull him into our bedroom if guests are staying.

Hen2018 · 05/07/2021 14:07

Bunk beds but 7 feet long! (They’re both over 6 feet tall). They’re jolly hard to come by.

Wimpund21 · 05/07/2021 14:07

Mine all have singles - but oldest are 13 and 11 and are due new beds soon and we're considering small doubles. More for the 'feeling grown up' aspect than any actual need. Won't get full doubles as they share and despite it being a large room I think two doubles would look silly!

I find the trend of giving little kids huge beds bizarre to be honest. Especially when centred in the room, bedside tables either side and essentially just like an adults room!

Shmithecat2 · 05/07/2021 14:09

Ds is 5yo now and has always had a double or king, as he never slept in a cot/we cosleep.

Elpheba · 05/07/2021 14:15

Toddler bed for youngest, then will have single as their room is small. Other dc is 5 and has a double- like others it made sense because we were given the frame so just had new mattress. Has actually been great if one of us needs to sleep with them or to use as spare double for guests and they come in with us. Top tip- we just use a single duvet- plenty big enough & less washing!

BrownEyedGirl80 · 05/07/2021 14:18

Ds 7 has had a small double since he grew out of his cot bed.

ABCDEF1234 · 05/07/2021 14:20

Toddler has a double - refused to sleep in anything smaller

HalfTermHalfTerm · 05/07/2021 14:20

I had a double bed as a teenager (about 12 years ago) but I was the only person in my friendship group who did. It seems to be very popular now for small children to have big beds but I don’t really think it’s necessary and I always think little children look a bit lost in anything bigger than a single!

I managed for three of my four years at uni in a single bed (as did all of the men I was friends with) so I think the average child/teen will be fine in a single if that’s all there is sensibly room for.

If I were single I would happily sleep in a full size single bed and have the extra floor space though, so maybe I’m just strange Grin

DeadButDelicious · 05/07/2021 14:22

My four year old has a single bed (we went straight from a crib to a single) and we'll get her a double when she's older as I know both myself and my husband hated being in a single bed as teenagers. It's nice to have room to stretch out.

Wow, he's young to be having such demands. Grin
CharlieWorkCharlieSad · 05/07/2021 14:25

@MinnieMountain

Our 2 double bedroom first house is worth around £160,000 now. It’s perfectly possible to buy a house big enough for double beds on an average income still.
@MinnieMountain

I guess we decided to have more kids and less space!!

A 4 bed house with enough room for each bedroom to have double bed in it just isn't in our budget!

But we're a happy family despite the room sharing and single beds. Grin

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 05/07/2021 14:26

DS1 14 has a double - he outgrew the single and it's miserable to not be able to sleep comfortably.
DS1 6 still has a single.

It's not bizarre at all and it isn't about "need" it is about comfort and what works for you as a family.

Personally, I have a king all to myself. I'm not sleeping in a single. Personally I think a double is too small for 2 adults.

Lorw · 05/07/2021 14:34

Just whatever you do don’t get one of them a double bed and the other a single cause a double won’t fit in their room. Will cause resentment.

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 05/07/2021 14:39

@LittleLottieChaos
So what do you think that even bigger beds were designed for? 3 adults sleeping together? Grin
It's about preference and comfort, nothing else!

billy1966 · 05/07/2021 15:04

All 5fts here, purchased before they were born.
They are a disaster, they will NEVER move out😁.
All of them adore their beds and the truth is they are spectacularly comfortable despite all being 20+ years old, with no plans of changing them.

I had a double growing up, I think it ruins you for a single, and makes you a nightmare to sleep with...or maybe that's just me!
