What size bed do your DCs have?

My DDs (9 and 11) could do with new beds. They really want doubles though one only has a narrow room so not sure it will fit.
Are double beds normal for kids? I didn’t get one till I moved out of home.

Both mine (5&13) have singles even though they have rooms big enough to take doubles. They are decent beds with really good mattresses.

Both are comfortable. We have rollaways for sleepovers.

We just felt that they had more space to hang out/ play and they didn't need anything more at the moment. Might change once they become older teenagers.

Both Ds1 (5) and Ds2 (3) have doubles. We have the room and it’s great to be able to get into their beds to read books and have a cuddle. If you have room for a double, I’d definitely recommend it. Singles are just too small.

Groundtoahalt · 05/07/2021 12:40

Dd went from kids bed to small double when she was 8. She's 16 now and still has an (upgraded) 4ft bed which she's really happy with.

Standard double duvet etc and it's easy enough to get 4ft fitted sheets on ebay.

DS (12) has a double, he’s really wriggly. He doesn’t really need playing space but he has another room anyway that he calls his office (realise this makes me sound like a knob!).

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 05/07/2021 12:41

Mine all have doubles/king-not that much more expensive and great for sleepovers/comfort and for sleeping with a child who is unwell

RoseZinfandel · 05/07/2021 12:42

Mine have singles, as do their friends (that I'm aware of).

They've never asked for a bigger bed.

If they are still living at home as adults, then they can buy themselves a double bed if they wish.

LittleRa · 05/07/2021 12:43

I had a single bed until I moved out to go to Uni at 18. My 7yo DD has an IKEA Hemnes daybed which is single but large and pulls out to a double (two single mattresses go side by side).

thelegohooverer · 05/07/2021 12:45

When I was in college the people who had double beds at home really struggled to adapt to single beds in college accommodation and in hostels and the shared dives we stayed in on working holidays. Generally they came from families happy to pay the premium for bigger rooms so it wasn’t really a problem but I think some of us poorer students were more adapted to adventure.

Mine have single beds because floor space for monster Lego builds is still important and because I want them to leave home eventually

MrsBobDylan · 05/07/2021 12:45

My youngest two have mid century day beds which are slightly narrower than a standard single but the same length. They are plenty wide enough for adult and it free's up floor space for playing.

MinnieMountain · 05/07/2021 12:46

DS has a double as it was the bed in our spare room, which became his bedroom, when he was born.

It’s handy for reading to him, when he’s ill etc. We probably would have got a single if we’d needed a new bed for him though.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/07/2021 12:47

@Bluntness100

Doubles. Singles are fairly miserable and only if you really can’t fit anything bigger.
Don't be ridiculous. We have a spare single bed that I some times use, it's absolutely fine.

This is definitely another 'only on Mumsnet' thing. IRL most people don't have houses with bedrooms big enough for DC to have double beds for a start.

Providora · 05/07/2021 12:49

My teens are in a double and a king, both hand me downs as the adult beds were upgraded over the years.

They're both well over 6' and don't fit in a single.

Providora · 05/07/2021 12:51

I should add their bedrooms are 4m x 3.5m - loads of room in an otherwise very modest home. And yes we exist in real life, outside of mumsnet!

Kittykat93 · 05/07/2021 12:52

I genuinely didnt realise so many kids had double beds, when I was young none of my friends did, and neither did I! when I was 14 i did get a 4ft bed, but to hear of 6 year olds having a double I dont think it's really necessary

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/07/2021 12:53

we have 3 Ikea bunkbeds that can be used as such (DS3 & DS5 use that, they share a room) or as single beds (that's what DS1, DS2 & DS4 have).

DD & DS6 sleep on a king sized mattress (no bed frame) because they still have the occasional accidents at night so it's the practical thing for us.

they will be having single beds/bunkbeds at some point - we will be rearranging bedrooms & who shares with whom next year so we'll decide then what to get.
but won't be buying double beds. waste of space

WimpoleHat · 05/07/2021 12:54

My kids both have doubles. Not sure why, really! Got one for the older one when she needed a new bed and then the younger one wanted the same later on when it came to replace that bed. I think most kids just have singles, though. You can’t get double size in a lot of children’s bedding for a start.

I think it's just because a lot of people on Mumsnet have enough money for houses with big bedrooms and then enough money to buy double beds Grin

My 3 kids shared a room for 2 years Grin

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/07/2021 12:55

we are also going to get a bigger bed for DS2 soon.
he's 6'7" so we might get a double bed for him if we can't get something extra long.

FudgeSundae · 05/07/2021 12:57

Don’t most uni bedrooms have singles? It’s going to be weird going from a double to a single for kids going to uni.

Seasidemumma77 · 05/07/2021 12:57

The dc still living at home, eldest has a king size and younger two each have doubles. Youngest's bed takes up pretty much whole room.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 13:24

Of course it isn't "only on Mumsnet". This is such a ridiculous statement. 😂 (unless it refers to the MN chicken which really is only on MN)

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 13:25

DS's both had small doubles in their halls.

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/07/2021 13:28

Ds 14 has a king size, we would have probably bought double but we gave him our newish but cheapish one and upgraded ours.

DD 9 has a single but it’s already complaining she wants a double but won’t fit well in her room.

LittleLottieChaos · 05/07/2021 13:43

This is just bizarre. A double bed is designed for two adults to sleep together in. A single bed is for a single individual, a child (unless gargantuan) doesn’t need a double bed to themselves.

MinnieMountain · 05/07/2021 13:45

Our 2 double bedroom first house is worth around £160,000 now. It’s perfectly possible to buy a house big enough for double beds on an average income still.
