Which fun and completely impractical car?

After years of sensible family cars, now DC have cars of their own, I was thinking I might treat myself to something really stupid Grin

I was along the lines of an MX5, but DS1 has told me I can't have a middle aged mum car and shall be ignored

What would you go for for your midlife crisis car? Is there something fun that's a little less midlife crisis?

I think you're going to have to test drive all of them to find out, probably for the weekend... Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/06/2021 17:53

I'm picking up a brand new Mini Cooper on Sunday.
I already have one, but it's not new anymore!
Really fun to drive, surprisingly comfy and will sit happily at 90 70 Grin

Before I had kids I drove a beetle. I loved that car. Would love to have own one again.

FlamingGoat · 23/06/2021 17:56

Husband has a 1972 MGB GT which I can have when I pass my test (I'm definitely over 40).
Best incentive ever to pass 😍

Mercedes SLK convertible. I’ve decided this is what I’m having as my next car.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 23/06/2021 17:59

Seconding the Mini Cooper!

Shitzngiggles · 23/06/2021 17:59

Now I no longer need a family car I have a Mini Cooper. Absolutely love it.

justasking111 · 23/06/2021 18:00

My mini cooper convertible so much fun yet can still get two baby seats in rear for grandkids or dogs, suitcases etc.

Mogloveseggs · 23/06/2021 18:01

For me it would be a land rover defender
Or a mustang Grin

Buggerthebotox · 23/06/2021 18:02

Also fancying a Mx5 but thinking it may be a bit low for my old knees...

Also fancying:

Alfa Spider.
Chrysler Crossfire.
Toyota GT6(?)
Audi TT.
Peugeot RCZ
Renault Wind.
Merc SLK.

My favourite is the face lifted Mazda though.

Boood · 23/06/2021 18:04

I love my MX-5. It’s mildly embarrassing that I can’t give more than one person a lift, but on balance it’s a sacrifice I’m happy to make. The longest, dullest drive is significantly less of a hardship when the sun is shining and the roof is down.

Funnily enough I’ve had a few younger male colleagues be extremely disparaging about it. I have no idea either why they need to have an opinion about my choice of car or why they think I give a fuck.

CormoranStrike · 23/06/2021 18:06

Convertible all the way!

Heneage · 23/06/2021 18:07

Audi 3 softtop. I had an MX5 and it was just too small even for one person. I adore my Audi

thereisnophalange · 23/06/2021 18:07

Middle aged mum of 2 here and I love love my beetle convertible!!

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/06/2021 18:08

The boot in my Mini is tiny, but then I don't need a big boot, I also don't need the back seats so could easily collapse them if needed.
A friend of mine has one with a car seat in the back and has managed fine for 5 years.

Backhills · 23/06/2021 18:08

I had a mini cooper as a courtesy car once . Absolutely hated it. Like driving a tin tray. Grin

Definitely! I recently sold mine as pregnant with 1st, easily the best car I’ve ever had.

Mine was late 90s so cheap as chips but drove perfectly and instant grin whenever you put your foot down.

KenAdams · 23/06/2021 18:11

Aries Atom. Although I'm not sure that's quite the sort of thing you're looking for Grin

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 23/06/2021 18:14

Yy to SLK - this is my plan too once kids are older
Or Jaguar F-Type convertible

motogogo · 23/06/2021 18:18

Mx5. Was so tempted but sensible mum brain kicked in and a bought a hatchback because it seats 5 and can take the dog (who doesn't even live with me anymore but im holiday cover)

motogogo · 23/06/2021 18:20

Still wish I got the mx5! Next year, though dp wants a classic convertible, wistfully looking at db6's (more than the house is worth!)

Great car though!!
LadyPoison · 23/06/2021 18:33

MX-5 driver here but it's 10 years old and time for a change. I'm not keen on the Mk4 though

I have the Honda Civic Type R Sport Line in my sights at the moment

BeeyatchPlease · 23/06/2021 18:39

Loved my Audi TT when I had one (pre DC)!

Watto1 · 23/06/2021 18:55

DH is horrified but I really fancy a Smart! I’ve loved them ever since they came out but the time has never been right.
