Wallah! It's the first time I've seen voilà written this way. But when I think about it, it seems like a really obvious thing to do so I wonder how common it is.
Is it a "thing" that I've just missed before now?

No, I’m on a mostly American Facebook page and it’s really commonly used there. I had to google because I didn’t know what it meant!

ButItRingsAndIRise · 14/06/2021 17:20

I have seen that on Failbook before but never in real life.

I saw a sealing light advertised on eBay once Grin

It's always mentioned on the numerous threads on here started to slag off other people's poor English, so, yes, it's a thing you've missed. Often it's used ironically to try and be funny.

I saw a post that read "You're such a hypocrit, it's like the popcorn kettle black"

Took me a while to work it out but it's my new favourite saying now 🤣

SudokuMania · 14/06/2021 17:24

Winder winder (window winder - when cars still had those)

HelpMeh · 14/06/2021 17:25

Being generous, I assume they're not Arabic speakers...? In which case it's a legitimate word.
It means "I swear to God".

Geamhradh · 14/06/2021 17:27

Interestingly, I looked up the origin of "wallah" for "voilà" and its earliest use was noted in 1739. The linguist Arnold Zwicky hypothesises that it's what non-French speakers would automatically write if they knew the word aurally but not in writing.

Bluntness100 · 14/06/2021 17:29

I have to be honest.

When people write “draws” instead of drawers it always surprises me. I understand many people are sadly functionally Illiterate, but when posting on a forum it’s clear you have a very basic grasp of being able to read and write. How people get to adult hood, have their own homes and don’t know it’s a drawer and not a draw always surprises me.

I once saw someone's name written in an appointment book as Vagaina instead of Virginia!

That's interesting, but it also relies on the writer not knowing the pronunciation. There's a definite 'v' sound.

Muphry strikes again.

Last week there was a Mumsnet thread where someone was described as being rather "non-shallot."
The thread rather sad in its content, and probably not the place for a grammar jump-on but it made me laugh. It will be non-shallot for ever from now on.

If you say whallah with the right emphasis I think your brain inserts the "v" sound so you can get away with it verbally.
