Wallah! It's the first time I've seen voilà written this way. But when I think about it, it seems like a really obvious thing to do so I wonder how common it is.
Is it a "thing" that I've just missed before now?

People writing “non” when they mean “none” and vice versa.

TellingBone · 14/06/2021 20:04

@Crankley

There was a thread on here recently which wasn't going the OP's way and she ended a post with 'Chow!' (ciao).
It's a doggy dog world

While I don't really mind poor spelling and grammar on MN and other chat type websites, I really DO find it very annoying when I see it in newspapers, books and magazines. Someone is being paid to check those things, and I always wonder how they are ever employed in the first place.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 14/06/2021 20:08

"Ooh, aren't you the cats bananas?"
Hmm

Puffalicious · 14/06/2021 20:09

I had a lively debate some years ago that I was a real card shark! I thought they were ridiculous that they insisted it was card sharp. Shark is so much more relevant (ie destroying your opponent). I was Blush when soon after I was proved incorrect!

I also thought, when younger, it was self-depreciating humour because I was 'depreciating ' myself!

Ostara212 · 14/06/2021 20:10

What's an assaulted soft toy?

SnottyLottie · 14/06/2021 20:10

I once corrected a friends’ spelling/grammar when she said “making ends meat”. She answered it wasn’t a mistake because it means putting the ‘meat ends’ together into a new meal so you’re not wasting food and you’re also saving money by eating the leftovers 😆

Assorted soft toys?

No, the writers and editors are poorly paid these days, and usually constantly reacting to news. Proof readers aren't a thing now.
Ostara212 · 14/06/2021 20:12

stack oh, thanks 😂

MissConductUS · 14/06/2021 20:13

I always liked "for all intensive purposes".

Hathertonhariden · 14/06/2021 20:14

Ect

Mamanyt · 14/06/2021 20:14

Lol...TWO MORE sprang to mind!

"heavy duty wenches" rather than "heavy-duty winches" and "venitian blonds." The last, to be sure, MUST have been a typo! I hope. The first was not, just a draftsman with more talent than book learning.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/06/2021 20:15

@PandasCatsWolves

There's a lot wrong with expresso !
Such as?
Benjispruce3 · 14/06/2021 20:17

Assaulted soft toys is brilliant! Best yet Grin

Faranth · 14/06/2021 20:17

Generally instead of genuinely. Does change the meaning of the sentence a bit!

Benjispruce3 · 14/06/2021 20:19

My DM’s neighbour was heard complaining about the price of a restaurant. She said it was contortionist.Grin I still get a mental image of customers getting in to all sorts of positions to settle the bill.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 14/06/2021 20:20

Colleague of my ex used to refer to a serious mistake as “a real four-par”. We now use that at home

It looks like someone pointe it out and she changed the first one, but not the second.

Benjispruce3 · 14/06/2021 20:22

@SnottyLottie that’s hilarious.

73kittycat73 · 14/06/2021 20:22

@Benjispruce3

I’ll just have a slither of cake.Angry Noooooo!!!
Sorry to be dumb, but what's wrong with that one?
Bloodybridget · 14/06/2021 20:22

@VeniVidiWeeWee a strong black coffee is an espresso. It's Italian. As far as I know, there is no such word as expresso.

willowmelangell · 14/06/2021 20:22

Another reader of the 'non shallot' thread here.
Bloody love that!

Benjispruce3 · 14/06/2021 20:23

Slither is a movement that a snake makes.
Sliver is a thin slice. It’s a common mistake.

PixieDust28 · 14/06/2021 20:23

@Lairymary

This one made me chuckle, it was on a local FB community page.
Right. Mercedes or Mazda?! 😉.
