Rude comments from friends

Just wanted to feel I’m not alone Grin

An old friend came to my new home, walked through the door, stopped and said ‘bit small isn’t it?’

No, she wasn’t joking. It was a reasonably pricey house that id worked VERY hard for. She was being a bitch.

Anyone else?!

A friend of mine said last week " Have you never thought your hair would look so much better with a fringe and maybe a side parting?" Hmm

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/06/2021 08:12

A “friend” of mine who still lives at home at 39 saw pics of my home and said “is it ex council”….nope but even if it was it’s not a bedroom in my family’s house.
People who can’t be happy for others usually have little, too much negative energy around them.

My friend came to visit after I’d had new stair carpet fitted (that I’d waited & saved hard for)
“This reminds me why I have laminate throughout “ was her only comment

I might ask that without a shred of implied judgement. My house is ex council- I don't understand the stigma. Perhaps your friend was genuinely curious?

I'm confused why you would take that as an insult?

SleepyPartyTime · 12/06/2021 08:25

I remember describing a new appartment I was excited to be moving in to to a friend and she said 'well you've always been used to making do'.

grapewine · 12/06/2021 08:26

"Why are you worried about how it looks? It's only a rental." (not UK and not private)

Fuck off. It's my home. Excuse me for wanting it to be nice.

coodawoodashooda · 12/06/2021 08:26

'No I'm not surprised you are getting divorced'.
Actually I could fill a thread with the judgemental and hurtful comments I got from friends. I still feel ashamed.

Neolara · 12/06/2021 08:27

Basic 3 bed ex council houses go for £500k round here. You can only afford them if you a very healthy salary.

Why would anyone need to know though? It’s a weird question.

Ex council houses are great! Solid and the rooms are spacious. As a PP said I don't understand the stigma.
CagneyNYPD · 12/06/2021 08:29

A friend/neighbour once said "You're so good at all this mend, make and do stuff. I don't know how you put up with it". We were talking about my project to repaint my kitchen cupboards. Funnily enough, she is now just a neighbour.

Here too- the stigma is “ugly” outside, my house is just 1970s built - but your friend buys their first house you should compliment not question

Where I'm from ex council houses have much bigger rooms and gardens. I've bought three of them in my time and would ask this without there being any implied slight. It would just be out of innocent interest

I don’t get that. How is it not a bedroom in your family’s house?

This would also sit a little better if you hadn't made your own judgment about her living at home at 39
MrsBongiovi · 12/06/2021 08:34

Still think it makes no sense to ask.

PhannyPharts · 12/06/2021 08:36

@MrsBongiovi because i genuinely see it as a positive thing.

Londontown12 · 12/06/2021 08:39

Best friend ! Did u buy it 2nd hand !! My new swan fridge ! ‘ no we didn’t u cheeky bitch ‘
Oh cus u like buying vintage usually.
I take no notice or say something back to embarrass her 😂😂😂

PhannyPharts · 12/06/2021 08:40

Just to add my own one. When swimming with my friend and her sister as a 20 something . Her sister said to me "I see skinny girls get cellulite too"

It's something I've always been very conscious of and 20 odd years later still stings

MrsBongiovi · 12/06/2021 08:41

because i genuinely see it as a positive thing.

But then if it’s not ex council, it’s negative as rooms are smaller. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PhannyPharts · 12/06/2021 08:44

@MrsBongiovi I see your point. I'm just happy for my friends whatever house they get. But I wouldn't ever see ex council as a bad thing.

Bluntness100 · 12/06/2021 08:46

Oh I hate faux naivety and and that fake bemusement, everyone knows there is a council house look that’s not perceived as a positive. There been many a thread on it, so clearly the implication was the house had that undesirable council house look.

ShinyGreenElephant · 12/06/2021 08:46

My house is ex council and its lovely with a massive garden (although doesn't look especially nice from outside I do have to agree on that). Dont get why that would be an insult.

OneKeyAtATime · 12/06/2021 08:47

To me some of these are not bad at all. Perhaps your friends weren't being rude!

PhannyPharts · 12/06/2021 08:49

@Bluntness100 for some people there is maybe. Theres no faux naivety from me. Nor snobbery. Because some of us actually do love ex council houses which is why I bought three. And none were ugly.
