Just wanted to feel I’m not alone Grin

An old friend came to my new home, walked through the door, stopped and said ‘bit small isn’t it?’

No, she wasn’t joking. It was a reasonably pricey house that id worked VERY hard for. She was being a bitch.

Anyone else?!

Neolora where do you live where ex council houses are £500k?! We inherited our house. It's a 3 bed semi with a good garden in a sought after area. Houses rarely go up for sale in this area but when they do they are instantly snapped up. It's worth the top end for this area as are most houses in the street but houses worth £500+around here usually have pools etc and are huge!

Loads of places, especially in the South-surely people know that!? £500k gets you a semi round here.

DH & I designed a brilliant floor plan for extension to create a beautiful & large combined kitchen, living room & dining room.
it was one of those computer designs where you can add colours, objects and even some little avatars who can stand, lie down or be seated. everyone we showed it was interested and appreciated the effort we put in and thought how well it would all work and asked reasonable questions and gave lovely compliments.

then I showed it to my mum. she got duck's arse lipped then in an accusatory voice asked one question: " but where will the hoover & broom go? haven't you thought about how you'll keep it all clean?"

🙄 urgh

From a close friend: I was so worried my girls (daughters) would end up short and plump (exactly what I look like 🙄) !

@Howshouldibehave around here (SE) ex-council houses regularly sell for 500k plus. A non-ex-council 3 bed semi easily 800k

@TheCatsHaveEyes

Oh I hate faux naivety and and that fake bemusement, everyone knows there is a council house look that’s not perceived as a positive. There been many a thread on it, so clearly the implication was the house had that undesirable council house look

Yy to this. Yes there are many positives as people have listed but there is a stigma to ex Council houses

I was renting out my house whilst I went to university and so switched my mortgage to a buy to let one. One of the conditions of the mortgage was that it wasn’t a ex council house! Totally agree as others have said that the majority of council houses of a certain ages had much bigger gardens and were a good size.

Ex council houses you tend to get more for your money as many are not aesthetically very nice from thr outside, so if they are going for 500-800 k then a similar sized property, with the same sized plot and build, but with more kerb appeal will go for much more,

I can’t believe some of the daft fake comments on here, elevating ex council houses to the Eutipia of desirable expensive properties. I grew up in one. You get more for your money in comparison to other properties in the same price bracket. And that’s it.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers What on earth is wrong with an ex-council house???? Don't be so snobby & judgmental! Your friend asked a perfectly civil question!

Why is asking this question an issue between friends?

People are so overly sensitive these days! This is just how my friends & I are with each other! Open & honest and neither of us would have it any other way

I once called at a ‘friend’s’ house to drop off some photos she’d had taken. I had done her hair and makeup for them, and the photographer had brought them to my house. During the shoot, he’d asked to take one of me too, which clearly annoyed her.

The next time I saw her she said her brother had told her a girl ‘with a big nose’ had called with an envelope for her….

Her brother was about 13 and monosyllabic- my nose is a perfectly normal size. She was being an absolute bitch.

Agreed @Bluntness100 I live in one and bought for the very same reasons you've stated: big rooms, big garden, solidly built but a bit plain and functional on the outside. However, I've got more house for my money and am very happy with my purchase 😁

I mean council houses are not one single type. They've been built since the early 20th century. Some of the 1920s/1930s ones, especially in villages and small towns, look quite nice and come with large plots (so people could have a vegetable garden out front). The building materials can let them down as they were built using the cheapest stuff ie: bricks on the soft side but still pretty sturdy.

Erm, which is exactly why some people prefer them!

Totally agree about x council houses being a great buy.
