DH told neighbours off for playing Phil Collins

Both DH and I are working at home. Terraced house. Next door neighbours are fairly noisy. We are both very stressed at the moment as our autistic child has a serious ongoing health crisis and we're waiting for some important news.

I've thought for a long time now that DH is also on the Autistic Spectrum (as well as his child, his sibling and nieces are diagnosed with ASD). He has sensory issues to do with noise, and he is very, very particular about music. Music snob level. He gets visibly very disturbed if music he hates is played.

This lunchtime our neighbours were playing Phil Collins very, very loudly. It went on for a long time. We could hear it very clearly and loudly even with our back door closed. DH popped his head out of the back door and shouted: "whoever is playing Phil Collins, turn it OFF. And get some musical taste".

I am mortified. Phil Collins ceased immediately, but there was then some very loud and angry sounding discussion between the Syrian couple next door in Arabic or Farsi.

DH has never done anything like that before, but has had a go at the same neighbours because their kids were repeatedly throwing balls into our garden and back off our house.

DH said that people who play Phil Collins don't deserve respect. I was thinking of asking him later to apologise, or apologising myself. Advice please?

@SandrasAnnoyingFriend

Phil Collins or Genesis? The difference is key here...
It might depend which album. Wink

That 1986 Invidibke Touch Genesis album has more in common with Phil Collins than early Genesis IMHO.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/06/2021 15:49

I can't believe the amount of people to think this is fine and amusing.
If I heard someone telling me what I could and could not listen to "in my own home" especially which I've shed blood sweat and tears to pay for.
I'd be calling it harassment. If it was blasting out at 1am but not lunch time
Contrary to this the options on this thread op. Other peoples taste do not and do not have to revolve around your DH..

PrincessNutNuts · 09/06/2021 15:50

@MadMadMadamMim

I'm with your DH on dickheads who 'share' their music with the neighbours.

I am neutral on the subject of Phil Collins musical value. But genuinely bemused by the fact that he was a) known and b) loved by Syrians.

Who'd have thought it...

Phil Collins is global. Grin

I just got a really strong pang about how long it's been since we could hold our phones/lighters/glow sticks in the air at a gig. Sad

DoucheCanoe · 09/06/2021 15:53

My DS is Autistic and seems to think that his music is better than everyone else's and has also sneered at people with different tastes.

I told him to stop being an arrogant arse and deal with the fact that the world doesn't revolve around him and what he likes.

I'd be mortified of he shouted out to neighbours and told me they didn't deserve respect.

SpeakingFranglais · 09/06/2021 15:54

ha ha ha

there is nothing worse than someone else's choice of loud music when the weather is good and the windows are open.

fantasmasgoria1 · 09/06/2021 15:56

I shouldn't laugh but it made me chuckle somewhat. It was the sort of thing my father would have and had done. He used to embarrass my mother at times but sometimes he had a point!

Roselilly36 · 09/06/2021 15:56

How rude, everyone’s music taste is different, they might hate the music your DH likes, if their music is loud, knock on the door and ask politely for it to be turned down.

Trouvaille · 09/06/2021 15:58

To be fair, I would have done the same

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/06/2021 15:58

@SpeakingFranglais

unless it's loud music AND bbq smoke flooding into the house from next door.
I think that's worse

SempreSuiGeneris · 09/06/2021 15:59

Noise cancelling headphones if you feel the need to shout at the neighbours while WFH. Average UK office is in the centre of a busy City / Office Development with an open plan layout. Suburbia is generally much much more peaceful. Working in semi-silence was not a thing pre WFH.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 09/06/2021 16:01

@insancerre

Good on him There is never any reason to listen to Phil Collins
Seconded.
KatherineJaneway · 09/06/2021 16:01

@corahallett

I bloody love Phil Collins
Me too
Moonmelodies · 09/06/2021 16:08

Like him or not, Phil Collins was never cool.

toocold54 · 09/06/2021 16:09

Honestly it was the level of noise he was mostly reacting to. It was far too loud for a weekday when people are WFH

He said they don’t deserve respect because they listen to Phil Colin’s what a disgusting thing to say with no relevance to the level of noise.

Topia · 09/06/2021 16:09

People who are saying it’s rude - I agree the delivery of his request lacked finesse; and it’s not about the right to play your music in your house - that’s fine; it’s the VOLUME that’s inconsiderate!!!

again2020 · 09/06/2021 16:14

Phil Collins is a bloody legend in my eyes 😂
Although playing ANY music loudly for long periods of time is rude.

He said that in private to me, not to them. And it wasn’t a fully serious comment but a grumble.

@pussycatlickinglollyices

I love Phil Collins, if he'd shouted that I'd have turned it up obviously not knowing he has problems with it

I'm currently listening to something the young people of today class as music, it's just incessant noise (I'm not that old 😂 ) but I haven't gone outside and shouted "whoever is playing that shite music, turn it off".

🍫🍫

Our DS bought his first vinyl at the weekend but after he initial proud moment we had to sneak off and put our fingers in ears while he enjoyed the moment
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/06/2021 16:20

@Lillygolightly

If the volume of the music was offensive or bothersome, then yes it’s fair enough to complain.

If the it was the the musical taste that was offensive, then I’m sorry but that is very unreasonable.

No one persons taste is music is better than someone else’s!!

This.
BackBeatTheWordisOnTheStreet · 09/06/2021 16:23

I'm team DH too! Yes it was a very grumpy response but they shouldn't be playing loud music in the first place and on a hot day everyone gets easily annoyed.

HelpfulBelle · 09/06/2021 16:23

I hate music snobbery. I'll only talk to people about music if they've got catholic tastes and enjoy/engage in a wide range of styles or genres. If they claim to hate a certain type of music, I judge them massively.

Then again, I think I have undiagnosed ASD and music is one if my special interests Grin

Polkadots2021 · 09/06/2021 16:28

I'm with these guys - Phil Collins rocks!!

Cocolapew · 09/06/2021 16:33

Team DH here.
I shouted at neighbours last summer, I don't know who they were because they are on the estate that backs on mine, about playing Ed bloody Sheeran full blast. I really, really hate Ed Sheeran.
Last week the man across the street from me, his back garden is opposite me,was playing the radio through Alexa.
I swear to god they are the noisiest family ever. Whatever he's doing is always at 10000 decibels.
He kept shouting at Alexa to change stations. In the end I shouted Alexa switch off. He did laugh and kept it lower for a while Hmm

KatherineJaneway · 09/06/2021 16:39

I'm sorry he's so loud but this did make me laugh with you turning his Alexa against him.

VeryLongBeeeeep · 09/06/2021 16:47

Oh, those wacky forriners with their loud music and their strong weed... Hmm Here Fido! Come on boy!
