Is anyone a regular LBC listener?

I’ve only recently found it, and have heard lunchtime and early evening shows until now.

Just tuned in this morning and listening to someone referring to himself as “Steve Steve Steve”, and it is very Alan Partridge-esque.

It was real stream of consciousness stuff, running from the empty beaches of Barra and the soup you will need in your campervan to day trips around Twickenham, murders in Gloucestershire and litter-throwing, with little tonal range along the way.

I found it bizarre, but maybe this was an off morning?

Grin that’s Steve Allen - he’s on 4am-7am. Not an off morning, that’s exactly how he is all the time!!

Try 10-1pm James O’Brien is awesome

CormoranStrike · 19/05/2021 07:39

Hah @Etihad that’s just insane!

I mainly listen to LBC during the day but I believe Steve Allen is a one off in his presenting style. Pretty much revered by the other presenters! Most other shows have phone ins. He's followed by Nick Ferrari, James O'Brien and Sheila Fogarty, on weekdays, all who have good shows.

That’s Steve. I suspect he is in here - some of the things he comes out with (going on about Naomis baby - ‘so did she buy one?’). He tends to read pieces out the newspaper.

I’m usually awake from 4:30. So I know all about his car, his diabetes, shopping in M&S, his brother and godchildren, his childhood in Yorkshire/Hong Kong, days on the biscuit factory radio, when he roomed with ballet dancers...

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/05/2021 07:50

At least he wasn’t singing today.

Pyewackect · 19/05/2021 07:54

Steve Allen has been at LBC for 40 years and has developed a unique style all of his own. I listen to him on my way into work and love his take on the world. Nick Ferrari is good , remember is interview with Diane Abbott ?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/05/2021 07:54

I’m usually on R4 from 7am.

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 07:57

I do. I love Steve Allen. Totally unique. And doesn't take any calls from listeners, unlike the other presenters.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/05/2021 07:59

I listen to the late night/early morning shows with call ins. There is definitely a special type of person who calls the radio to rant at silly o’clock (and they aren’t all bakers or night shift workers!)

CormoranStrike · 19/05/2021 08:06

Oh, he did sing a little bit lol!

With all this reverence I maybe need to give him another go.

My favourite slot is mystery hour. James OBrien on Thursdays 12 midday. Love it.

I used to love James O’B but he’s becoming more condescending if you don’t agree with him. I agree with some not everything he says. Love Sheila at 1pm.

MoChridhe · 19/05/2021 08:12

I love Natasha Devon and Iain Dale.

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 08:15

ImAncient I agree, I sometimes have to turn James O'Brien off because he's become insufferable, he can be so condescending and smug. A shame, as I like his programme generally. I love Mystery Hour.

Sheila Fogarty, Eddie Mair and Iain dale are all excellent. I can't bear to listen to Andrew Castle at weekends though.

felineflutter · 19/05/2021 08:18

LBC is OK a bit annoying in the daytime. Times radio is my new favourite.

Undeuxdrei · 19/05/2021 08:20

Nick Ferrari Brexit central, condescending if even a whiff of having different politics ie left wing. Twin of Fartage (as James OB calls him Grin)
James O'brien can come across as a bit of a know-it-all, but on the whole speaks sense.
Phone ins much better than bbc offerings with nicky 'I will allow any old rubbish to be spouted without challenge' campbell on BBC 5.

1988Username · 19/05/2021 08:22

Oh I love LBC, I love a bit of Steve Allen usually because I only listen to that show on the way to the airport (might be a confidence of my enjoyment there!) I'm not huge for Nick Ferrari, I don't share a lot of his views but I can certainly listen to him as he has a way of putting his views across, I love James OB it's Sheila for me though that tends to not be listened to and I love Eddie LBC Eddie is a lot better than R4 Eddie.

RedMarauder · 19/05/2021 08:24

Ahh Steve Allan. I'm always impressed how he can ramble on without any callers. I don't get to listen to him much any more but I use to on the way to work when I went in early.

Then there is Nick Abbott from 10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He has a unique way of dealing with drunk conspiracy theorists.

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 08:24

And I love the fact that Eddie Mair has the 'Steve Allen sound bite of the day' during his show every day.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/05/2021 08:27

I remember when LBC used that have good old theme shows - doctors, travel, I seem to remember a pet one too (or maybe I imagines that one). Wasn’t there also a tech guy? Try did try getting a co-host but I suspect Steve didn’t like that. He doesn’t engage with the engineers as much (used to name check them and talk to them) but you could hear one muttering in the background last week.

eddiemairswife · 19/05/2021 08:28

Eddie Mair is on from 4pm to 7pm.Grin

Sarahlou63 · 19/05/2021 08:28

Love James O'Brien - I tend to plan my day so I can catch most of his show. Tom Swarbrick and Matt Frei at the weekend are also good.

StCharlotte · 19/05/2021 08:34

Love a late night phone-in. Used to listen to Radio London but they went all weird and seemed to stop the 10pm - 1am calls last year so we went back to LBC.

Steve Allen is extraordinary! And Yes, Nick Abbott is, er, different...

I did miss some of the Radio London regular callers and I wonder what happened to them when their usual outlet changed. So I was delighted to hear one on LBC last night.

CormoranStrike · 19/05/2021 08:43

Lots of excellent suggestions, thank you.

Time for me to tune in more - and some old faves from R4 and R5, which is good.

I know Nick Ferrari is Brexiteer but I don’t find he’s as condescending to remainers as James to Brexiteers. And I’m a remainer. I like all the others mentioned but also Maajid Nawaz is great too.

NoMoreHGTVPlease · 19/05/2021 09:17

I cant seem to get the right tuning in mk to listen to lbc. Any help anyone?
