Things/food/people you want to like, but just don't

Hi,

Just thought I'd start a lighthearted thread about this, as it popped into my head this morning that no matter how much I try, I just don't like porridge and it really annoys me. Irrationally so. Let's be honest, It really doesn't matter if I like it or not, but I keep persevering for some reason. My issue is, do you need to chew? Do you just swallow? Confused Do you use it to put up your wallpaper?....

Oh and also, whisky. Always sounds so nice. Hot toddy, a wee dram, scotch on the rocks. All lovely sounding things, but it tastes rank! To me anyway.

I'm sure I'll think of plenty more as the thread goes on.

Over to you Smile

Tess Daly. She seems wooden and insincere to me.

I also get camping guilt. There is something so worthy about it and know camping families think they are better than everyone else with their gadgets bustling round and wanging on about being outdoors.

I went to guide camps and my family did euro camp for years so have done it but doing it now as the parent it is such a bloody effort. Dh flatly refuses. I took the kids once with a group of friends Christ what an effort.

Oysters. Every so often my dad convinces me to try one again and then films my reaction. 🤢

itsalltrue22 · 19/05/2021 15:00

Olives
and MOST fish

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 19/05/2021 15:38

Curry.
Whiskey.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 19/05/2021 15:38

Camping.

Horses - they scare me. People say they are intelligent, intuitive creatures but they just look like haughty cliques who despise humans to me.

Spectator sport. It is all so boring. How can people get so excited and waste hours of precious summertime just watching other people have fun? I don't get it but I wish I did. It seems fun to go to a sports fixture together or lounge around sipping Pimms and watching a cricket match. But it makes me wriggle with boredom.

EverybodyKeepCool · 19/05/2021 16:01

Gin, just tastes of perfume but I do like tonic...
Dogs, so many people have them now and talk about them/post photos of them/kiss them Envy - not envy - but I don't care, they scare me and I wish they didn't but don't come at me with your 'oh they won't hurt/they are friendly/want to play' because I am still scared

@MephistophelesApprentice

Another one for coffee.

There's a powerful addictive stimulant, like cocaine. It's not only legal, but culturally you're encouraged to consume it in vast amounts while you work. But it tastes like a someone burnt some seeds, fed them to a cat and it vomited them into a cup.

The universe is cruel.

The most expensive beans are actually eaten and excreted by civet cats!

That really made me laugh.

"Cold cuts": sliced ham, turkey, bologna, etc. Seem so practical for a packed lunch or picnic or cold sandwich on the go, and also nice on a hot sandwich like a croque monsieur, but I hate them. Only kind I sometimes don't mind is salami, but I'm picky about that too.

Fish 'n' chips. I can't eat more than a couple of bites of the fish. I don't mind fish cooked other ways, or battered-fried seafood like scallops or clams - it's something about the big hunks of fish battered and deep fried that I can't handle.

Tea. I quite like certain herbal teas like chamomile or mint, but actual tea leaves (hot or cold): no.

Cooked fruit, especially fruit pies. Apple is the worst.

Prosecco. Like some white wines, like champagne occasionally, like sweet cocktails like a bellini - but hate prosecco.

TortoiseShed · 19/05/2021 16:52

Thing: skiing
Food: fish
Person: a number of relatives! Don't wish them any harm, but no, I don't like them much at all

Iamthewombat · 19/05/2021 16:55

Vermouth (Martini) fucking disgusting and ill drink almost anything

Tess Daly. She seems wooden and insincere to me.

But why do you wish that you liked vermouth and Tess Daly?

Cooked fruit, especially fruit pies. Apple is the worst.

Why do you wish that you liked cooked fruit?

Prosecco. Like some white wines, like champagne occasionally

Why do you wish that you liked Prosecco?

Or has the thread turned into “here are a load of things I don’t like”?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/05/2021 16:59

Tomatoes, cucumber, drinking water, exercise, cleaning.

I just feel I'd be so much healthier! And I wish I liked cleaning so it didn't feel like such a chore which I resent.

LunaNorth · 19/05/2021 17:01

David Attenborough. I’m sick of him looming up on my telly with his Awful Warnings.

The cooked fruit one is more of a convenience - it very frequently shows up at dinners in my extended family, and I just notice that everyone else likes it and not me. (Plus I feel sort of rude turning it down/leaving it if it's homemade).

Prosecco, too, seems to be ubiquitous - lots of people I know drink/serve it where I would use champagne, and it is a lot cheaper. This thread also actually made me wonder for a minute why I like it in drinks like bellinis and not alone.

Posted without realising there'd be an exam, what with the OP calling it a "lighthearted thread". Hmm

Iamthewombat · 19/05/2021 20:30

Is ‘light hearted’ code for ‘answer whatever question you feel like answering’?

CassandraCross · 19/05/2021 20:40

Chinese food. All of it. It's not the ingredients individually (although I hate corn), it's that sticky sweet sour glutenous mass it turns into.

Same here, it always seems slippery to me - yuk.

CassandraCross · 19/05/2021 20:45

Oh and running and cycling easy ways to get fit but I just can't force myself to like either.

DuckonaBike · 19/05/2021 20:48

I’m finding this thread rather cheering as it’s making me realise that I like almost everything 😀

Don’t worry if you don’t like whisky, though. Whenever I drink it I decide the next day that it would be better if I didn’t like it, or at least not quite so much.

Dacquoise · 19/05/2021 20:52

Buffet food. Plates piled high with mismatched tastes and textures and playing Russian roulette with the rice dish that's been sweating at room temperature for a couple of hours.

FictionalCharacter · 20/05/2021 04:04

@Cowbells

Noel Fielding. DC tell me he is hilarious and he has the reputation for being a lovely man but he just puts the shivering creeps up me.
Same!
MissMarplesGoddaughter · 20/05/2021 04:19

@MsTSwift

Dogs. Sorry. I don’t wish them harm but I don’t want them near me or jumping up at me or having their shit smeared around. Sadly almost every family know now has one and when my friends talk about them I can’t join in and frankly don’t give a stuff.
@MsTSwift

I feel exactly the same. Why do some dog owners allow their dog to lick their face after their dog has licked its own bottom!?!!?

Just so gross and revolting.....

Animum2 · 20/05/2021 08:24

Mushrooms they look and taste weird!

I understand lighthearted to mean, don't pick holes in some innocent comment and then it into something it isn't just because you feel like being awkward or shitty to someone today.
