Things/food/people you want to like, but just don't

Hi,

Just thought I'd start a lighthearted thread about this, as it popped into my head this morning that no matter how much I try, I just don't like porridge and it really annoys me. Irrationally so. Let's be honest, It really doesn't matter if I like it or not, but I keep persevering for some reason. My issue is, do you need to chew? Do you just swallow? Confused Do you use it to put up your wallpaper?....

Oh and also, whisky. Always sounds so nice. Hot toddy, a wee dram, scotch on the rocks. All lovely sounding things, but it tastes rank! To me anyway.

I'm sure I'll think of plenty more as the thread goes on.

Over to you Smile

Tea. Just the smell makes me want to vomit.
Wine. Sour and unpleasant. Keep getting bottles as gifts.

Maireas · 18/05/2021 18:15

Bananas - yuk.
Spa days - the opposite of relaxing to me!

Redcrayons · 18/05/2021 18:37

Oh I’ll add meditation to my list.

I got into online yoga during lockdown. I feel stronger, it’s relaxing and calming, I love it. So I thought meditation would be right up my street. Got the headspace app and nope, I can’t do it. It’s kind of boring and my mind wanders off after about 2 minutes.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/05/2021 18:42

Aubergine - it’s a lovely colour, the texture is of spongey flesh and it tastes like arse. I’ve tried so hard to love it over the years, I’ve now admitted defeat.

Carol Vorderman - she’s ridiculously intelligent and yet the ‘oh gosh I didn’t even know what a thigh gap was until someone pointed out that I had one’ simpering annoys me immensely.

Breaking Bad - can never hold my interest.

Hugsgalore · 18/05/2021 18:44

@ChannelLightVessel

I can’t stand hot porridge - I hate warm milk - but I like it made overnight in the fridge with milk/natural yoghurt.

As to a person, Kylie Minogue. She is talented and hard-working, and by all accounts is charming and lovely. I just don’t like her. I feel quite guilty about it.

I'm am the opposite I love warm porridge but overnight oats make me want to Vomit!
Arrowheart · 18/05/2021 18:50

Olives
Chinese food
Amanda Holden
Holly Willoughby

WingingItSince1973 · 18/05/2021 18:52

Ooo I love porridge and avocados (not together ha ha)

Hate cheese on toast. Disgusting together like that. Any fish, I would love to like fish and have a more varied diet. Ok don't hate me The Beatles (the band not the creatures). Bowling, absolutely dull but family like to play it for get togethers 😴

catwithflowers · 18/05/2021 18:53

@Enroljas

Olives Avacado Massages Wine
Gosh, that's my ideal combo 😂😂😂😂😂
Glitterypinkmoomin · 18/05/2021 18:58

Gin, I want to like it but I just don't!

Amanda Burton. I didn't like her character in Brookside and I think its just stuck in my head. I can't watch anything with her in. I even missed the last series of Marcella because she was in it.

NoisyBrain · 18/05/2021 19:00

Celery. I know it’s really healthy and I’d love to be able to eat it with a nice dip, but to my taste buds it tastes like a stick of industrial toilet cleaner. Just the smell of it turns my stomach.

NoisyBrain · 18/05/2021 19:01

I do love olives though 😁

Yes! The smell, taste and that stringy texture Envy (not envy)

ginoclocksomewhere · 18/05/2021 19:07

Coffee! I absolutely LOVE the smell of fresh coffee, but the taste makes me want to heave (I accidentally had a coffee sweet once and I swear I couldn't breath- but I was like 7 so may have blown it out of proportion).

I'd love to walk into one of those quirky coffee shops and order something fancy, not only that- I resent paying £2 for a cup of tea! 😂 Also love the look of tiramisu, tried it- gross.

Cheese- I can stomachs it melted on pizza if it's mild, and on things like pasta (again, melted!) but I swear every sandwich from a shop either has cheese or Mayo (don't like that either! 😂)

Lightningrain · 18/05/2021 19:15

Tea - it barely tastes of anything, even when a tea lover makes me a strong cup they insist I’ll like. To me it’s just a cup of diluted milk.

Celery and raw carrot - I love the idea of crudités as a healthy snack but can’t bear celery (the smell is bad enough) and hate the grainy texture of raw carrot.

Bananas - I keep persevering as they’re so good for a pre-exercise snack but I just don’t like that slimy centre bit. I can eat them in smoothies so it’s just the texture.

Ben Fogle - I’m sure he’s lovely but I just can’t watch him on TV.

ShonkyCat · 18/05/2021 19:24

@Imissmoominmama

Penne pasta- I think it’s the hollowness. I usually ask for spaghetti in my pasta dishes.

New World wines- too acidic and fruity.

Films and TV- I don’t have the attention span unless it’s something that really interests me (but I’ll read quite happily- weird).

Oh I love penne but can't bear macaroni! It is always too soft and it's just vile.

I wish I liked whisky because it looks like a great thing to enjoy as a nightcap but it tastes awful.

I also wish I liked poetry. I like classical music and literature and can enjoy various types of art but I just don't "get" poetry.

jaundicedoutlook · 18/05/2021 19:29

@MonkeyPuddle

Mashed potatoes. They’re absolutely vile. Vile, vile, vile.

But I want to like them as they should be lovely and comforting.

But even the smell of mash turns my stomach.

Hell yes - almost everyone seems to love the stuff, but the way its extremities turn cold and clammy so quickly just makes my stomach churn.

Mash especially, porridge, cream, custard, milk. Any sort of curry, Chinese food, melted cheese (love hard cheese though) cheese/creamy sauces, salmon, avocado, whiskey & wine do like gin & drank way it before it became fashionable don’t like all the flavoured ones, even though I really want to.
sassafras123 · 18/05/2021 20:04

Porridge
Spa days
Ugg boots
Celery love the smell not the texture
Pork apart from sausages
Tofu and Quorn tastes like polystyrene
Egg whites except for meringues
Bras
Brown clothing
Driving

Amdone123 · 18/05/2021 20:20

Spa days
Massages
Any pampering done by someone else. I just get irritated.
Olives
Rum. I like most alcohol ( too much, really), but rum is foul. I want to like it and when family visit from Jamaica, they always bring it. I never know if to drink it or take my nail polish off with it.
Same with Mr Madeley. Am sure he's a lovely man, and Judy seems fond, but he's too nice. Almost false.

Iamthewombat · 18/05/2021 20:21

I wish that I liked both yoga and yogurt but I dislike both for reasons eloquently explained upthread.

I have tried. With yoga when the instructor says Namaste I can barely contain the urge to shout FUCK OFF THE LOT OF YEZ! Cannot bear the pretence that yoga is the pursuit of the truly enlightened.

Seasidemumma77 · 18/05/2021 20:31

Would love to be able to eat things like muscles, oysters or silken tofu but I have a bizarre adversion to slimey textures. I start gagging before food even reaches my mouth, was incredibly embarrassing in a restaurant in Japan where my involuntary gagging caused great upset to my hosts.

I asked my mum if she could remember a particular childhood incident where this started, but she said even when I was weaning I had a fantastic palate but gagged at slimey textures.

LettyLoman · 18/05/2021 20:39

I hate hot chocolate. Any kind even posh stuff. I love normal chocolate and could eat it at every meal!

Luckyelephant1 · 18/05/2021 20:40

Oh yes any fancy fatty meat or meat on the bone. Eg. lamb shank/shoulder, belly pork, chicken thighs or wings, duck. Basically all the bits of meat that are often on fancy menus. Give me lean mince, lean steak, cheap sausages or chicken breast meat any time. Preferably grilled so there's barely any fat!

SilverOtter · 18/05/2021 20:49

Salad. I always think it looks so pretty, and it's healthy, and the idea of a cool, fresh, crunchy meal in hot weather is lovely but BLEUUUURRRRRGGGGHHHHH it's so cold and slimy and tasteless (to me anyway).

TheRavenNevermore · 18/05/2021 20:49

Fatty meat especially pork belly for which there are so many delicious looking recipes lately. Not a cat in hell's chance I'd put that fatty boak in my mouth.
Peppers - they're everywhere and they upset me. What IS that flavour?

Noel Fielding.
