We are going to DM's tomorrow evening after work and bringing her back here for a couple of days. We haven't seen her in person since last summer Shock

Perhaps too exciting for this thread but we are leaving DS home alone for the first time ever. He's 17 and sensible, but I am wary nonetheless Hmm

Champagneforeveryone · 28/05/2021 19:07

To clarify, we are leaving DS alone overnight. My last post did make it sound like we've never left him alone Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/05/2021 19:26

I am about to draw the BGB § 1619 on my son Grin. He is the only one with nothing to do until August, while the rest of us work

(§ 1619: Home and business services. As long as the child belongs to the parental household and is brought up or supported by the parents, the child is obliged to serve the parents in their household and business activities in a manner appropriate to their abilities and position in life.)

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 21:02

Prok, by the synchronized version, do you mean that you have to download the entire video before you watch it? Our son has nothing to do until he goes back to uni other than taking care of us while we recover from surgery. Speaking of surgery, DH and I are going to see the orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday, for his two week follow up. I also have some questions for him about mine, which will be a procedure known as a trochanteric bursectomy.

Champagne, I don't think either of ours spent the night alone until they went to uni. It's perfectly reasonable to be a bit concerned.

It's about to start pouring here and I'm still at work. We're supposed to get one to two inches of rain tonight, which is quite a lot. And lightening.

DD is asking to be left alone overnight but she is only 15 so said she is too young. I told DH who seemed keen but then thought about it and said but I wouldn't trust her. I think she would probably just be on her phone but would worry she might burn down the thatched roof by accident, putting cooking on then going on phone with headphones in and not hearing smoke alarm.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/05/2021 21:14

Miss No, sorry, wrong word. Synchronisation is called dubbing in English, I think. There is a German translation of the film skript, paying attention to the lip movements, spoken by actors and often one voice actor linked to one film actor for life. Amazon prime usually limits itself to the German language version, unlike Netflix, where I can switch from the original Spanish, to Italian or German or any other language I want to have fun with.

I had to google your procedure - Schleimbeuteloperation.

Sunbird24 · 28/05/2021 21:16

I got my my first sunburn of the year today on a visit to Beaulieu for the BBC Gardeners’ World spring show.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/05/2021 21:21

subbird - You had sun!?! And a garden show!???! I am not only slightly envoius.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 21:22

Prok, I find dubbing annoying too. The spoken words never match up correctly with the lip movements of the actors. I speak some French, but not enough to comfortably follow a movie in French.

Thank you for the German translation of my procedure. My orthopedic surgeon has a surname that I think is German, oddly enough. Smile

No thatched roof here thankfully, and we live in the kind of village where the old ladies would report loud parties back to us Grin

In any case, the best thing to come out of Covid is that neither DS or any of his friends can drive. Given that we live somewhere with zero public transport, I fervently hope believe this will prevent too much skullduggery.

Notthissticky · 28/05/2021 21:35

Our chalk board wall is in use!!! Absolutely love it but also ordered some dustless chalk on Amazon Prime PDQ!

Did a KIT day today which was fine. @MissConductUS, a KIT day, or keeping in touch day, is when you return to work for a day whilst on maternity leave. Ostensibly this is to not lose touch with what's happening in work, though I do them because they're paid! Apologies for the Britsplain if you knew this already!

Champagne one of my colleagues referred to a pupil as a lazy shit today Blush I realise that is highly unprofessional she was right though but just further evidence that teachers are sweary😅

DS2 is four months now and it looks like he'll have three teeth by the time the weekend is out!!

aibutohavethisusername · 28/05/2021 21:39

I swam a mile.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 22:33

Welcome, @aibutohavethisusername, and thanks for sharing your aquatic exercise news. A mile is very impressive!

Some knob cut me off entering a traffic circle roundabout on my way home tonight.

Notthis, I do recall hearing about keeping in touch days here on MN, but was not familiar with the acronym. Thanks for helping with my on going quest to master Britishisms.

The birds are already singing and its pitch dark.

@Frownette Are you still hiding?

soddingkitten · 29/05/2021 06:26

Sent DS to school in shorts today, hail, thunder and lightning incoming no doubt grin He has been scuffing the toes of his school shoes along the tarmac to stop on his bike, as opposed to using the brakes, so at this rate he’ll soon he wearing open toed sandals as well 🙈 I am NOT buying him new school shoes with just a few weeks of the school year left...!

DS1 told us last night that one of his teachers made a huge song and dance about him not being in approved school shoes on Thursday morning. He’s been in plain black trainers for a few weeks instead of black leather school shoes. Due to adjusted pandemic exam scheduling he finished his public exams earlier this week and his whole year group were released until the autumn yesterday. 🤦‍♀️

After many, many hours on the road (I have not missed bank holiday motorway driving during the pandemic), we are settled in our lovely holiday cottage. Our en suite bathroom door hinges are stiff and creak noisily so I will buy WD40 later.

My friend sent photos of Sodding at evening feeding so he hasn’t strayed yet. 🤞 He was reported to be “very purry”.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2021 08:22

At the risk of sounding too bowled over by excitement for the thread, very glad to find you all again Smile

Spudlet · 29/05/2021 09:02

Well done @aibutohavethisusername, a mile is a hell of a distance in the water!

We are at my DPs house for the weekend! DS is hugely excited 😊 DH and I are a bit blurry as we slept on the sofa bed and decided to let Spuddog sleep in the living room with us - this was a mistake as he spent large parts of the night exploring the room and is too deaf to be ordered back to bed without actually getting out yourself and directing him in. He then stuck a cold wet nose into the small of my back in the early hours. He can sleep in the kitchen tonight Hmm

DS gets a proper bed in the office/spare room and so is fresh as a daisy Grin

It is so, so lovely to see them all again - it’s my Grandma’s birthday today so we are all off down there for a barbecue. She is 93! 🎂

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/05/2021 09:19

@spudlet - best wishes to your grandma (unbekannterweise), have a lovely day.

I cleaned the kitchen, the machine is on its second load - bathroom, floor and dusting are still to do and some flower repotting. 9°C when i got up this morning but dry.
My DSis was reminded by her boss that she is carer for a severely disabled person. She got Moderna yesterday, yay!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/05/2021 09:27

We are throwing a party today for DS3 and 15 of his mates to celebrate the end of y11.
They are so looking forward to it because they could do practically nothing of the sort since last August.

so it's the calm before the storm. DH is buying last bits right now, then I just have to ice cupcakes and we need to sort ligthing & balloons on the decking. Everything else is prepared including party bags they're not expecting!

can't wait.

have a lovely day everyone!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 29/05/2021 13:56

I think this might be too exciting but I went to a party last night. Everyone there vaccinated. It was so lovely. We all kept smiling at each other like idiots. First time we've all got together like that since autumn 2019 I think.

It was such a perfect evening. And I stopped after 2 glasses of wine so no hangover.

Kezzie200 · 29/05/2021 14:00

We are covering our garden fruit bushes with netting today, to stop the birds getting to it before us.

And I'm getting our spare vegetable plants ready for a mate to collect on Monday. So he will have butternut squash, courgettes and tomatoes too.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/05/2021 14:57

@ZZTopGuitarSolo - How lovely! !!!!!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/05/2021 14:59

Pressed post to soon - I am allowed to visit a museum, without a guided tour (audio tracks do not do int for me - you cannot ask questions), oh, and I can do unessential shopping and drink coffee outside . (Neidisch ist gar kein Ausdruck!) Smile

Sunbird24 · 29/05/2021 15:58

I bought a new dress and 2 pairs of shoes today, given up ‘waiting til I’ve lost weight’ as currently nothing fits.

MissConductUS · 29/05/2021 16:14

Welcome, (back?), @Kezzie200, and thanks for sharing your gardening news. What type of fruit bushes do you have? My hot pink/reddish peonies have started to open.

Cold and rainy here. The good news is that my supermarket has live lobsters on sale for $9.99 per pound, so I'll get some tomorrow for dinner.

ZZ, your party sounds grand. Smile
