Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Richmond and Twickenham in Surrey

Chelsea
Fulham
Highgate
Oxford

Also the incomers to the more gentrified parts of East London can be quite bad- Hackney, Stoke Newington.

The Essex/London borders aren't exactly snobby, but can be quite flash and materialistic.

Massive, massive generalisations there, sorry Blush

Towns and villages surrounding and in The New Forest, some of the locals are convinced they are superior to us mere mortals

Richmond in Surrey was about the most Snobbish Place l ever worked, l was glad to get back home up North, but even around here it can be very Clannish, especially in some of the small Villages and Hamlets, where everybody knows each other, and any newcomers are judged with an Air of suspicion, and gossiped about behind closed doors, you cannot even Fart unless the next door busy body knows it!

Thankfully l no longer have connections to this Area since my Dad Passed away, and Covid actually did me a bit of a favour as l was spared the stress of having to organise a big funeral with all the pomp and ceremony that was expected to go with it, l didn’t have to be involved with such people!

Oxford v snobby. Parts of N London are deeply posh whereas the wannabes in Saaarf are mere snobs , being naturally inferior Wink

I cannot accept that Luton is snobbish. I mean, on what basis? I thought it was peopled by nothing but oiks. You'll be telling us next that Canvey Island is snobby. People need to know their place.

i think the snobbiest places are sometimes the nice villages near to not-so-nice towns. It’s so easy to feel “better than” in your pleasant village where the nearby town is a shithole

I think Mumbles is a bit like this. Its not special at all, but people walk around like they are the best thing since sliced bread.

Harrods department store. I went in there once, all excited to buy a little something special. You would think I was the creature from the black lagoon. I was waiting at the cashier, she kind of snorted and took the obviously posher woman behind me. I left.

Yes, I was a tourist and yes I was casually dressed but am not uncouth an uneducated. It was beyond excusable.

Burnham Market in Norfolk. Even the air is snobbish.

We were having a lovely weekend in Norfolk with friends from London ( we are in a Yorkshire). They insisted we go to Burnham Market as “lots of people they knew had mentioned it”
It was awful and we left ASAP, very up it’s own arse.

Obviously Luton was a joke answer.

I agree. I live in the 'not so nice' town and other towns and villages look down their noses at us.

Bath is the only place where a shop assistant looked me up and down and sneered (in Hobbs, FFS). I had gone in there with the intention of buying quite a few things but I turned around and walked out again. It was bizarre, I was probably earning considerably more than she was but she judged me based on my appearance because I was wearing outdoor gear.

This is making me laugh; I must be a big snob as 4 places I have lived in/near are already on here (all different counties, and I've not lived that many places 🙃) as well as where my grandfather grew up and then later lived and I spent holidays (also different counties). Though 2 of the places are definitely contraversial listings for snobby places 🤣

South cliff.in Scarborough. Very snobby but crumbling into the sea. I live in an old fishing family's cottage across the bay in the original Old Town with the local drug dealers, but at least it's built on the rocky headland and will survive down the ages. Grin

I used to live on Castlegate. It was lovely then, but that was 30 years ago.

Windsor and ascot have genuinely " posh" people who are usually far from snobby. They do also have a very high concentration of middle class wannabes who are the absolute epitome of snobby!

The consensus is that Morningside is very middle class, but manages to be fairly down to earth, possibly posh, but not snobby. For snobby Edinburgh you'd better looking at Stockbridge/Trinity. The Morningside property premium is to get your kids into the well regarded state schools, even the local private school is basically the cheapest option. Over Stockbridge/Trinity it's all about the expensive private schools.

I would have agreed with Harpenden, but St Albans is giving it a good go.

Same as PP, a lot of villages near not so nice towns. I live in Northamptonshire and it is definitely like that here.
