Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

Oxford has areas of massive deprivation & when I was a kid was the world hotspot for joy riding hardly snobby!

Although granted the students do sometimes have an element of snobbery about them although I'm sure most aren't.

FloofyGuineaPig · 15/05/2021 19:59

Basildon?!! Confused

lydia2021 · 15/05/2021 19:59

Sherborne, Dorset

Thighdentitycrisis · 15/05/2021 19:59

Who do the people of Basildon think they’re better than?

schroeder · 15/05/2021 20:00

People in Holt have had enough of the red trouser brigade. It didn't used to be like that 30 years ago.

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 20:01

East Renfrewshire (much of) full of snobby dreary type who wank on about schools all the time.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 15/05/2021 20:01

This is a brilliant thread - been looking for "naice" towns and villages to visit this year Grin.

Although Luton? Seriously?

Rover83 · 15/05/2021 20:01

Luton??? 😂

PostieModern · 15/05/2021 20:03

Lots of people in less nice parts of Edinburgh still have an innate sense of superiority, just because they come from Edinburgh. So I would say that snobbery is quite widespread

OlivesTree · 15/05/2021 20:04

Burnham Market in Norfolk. Even the air is snobbish.

From friends who live in Edinburgh there is quite a lot of school snobbery. There’s a large private school culture even among people who can’t comfortably afford it.
amatsip · 15/05/2021 20:08

Horsham, West Sussex, so posh they removed McDonald’s from the town centre as it wasn’t in keeping with the town.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 15/05/2021 20:15

Morningside in Edinburgh (in response to the request above to be more specific Grin)
Bath
Wimbledon village
Hampstead Heath
Southwold
The Cotswolds

Though I think more definition of "posh" is needed. Are we talking:

  1. twee (and I think Edinburgh and Bath deserve an honourable mention here);

  2. plummy accents and tweeds; or

  3. fucking filthy rich? As in gold mazaratis and basement swimming pools. Not many of those in Morningside...

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 20:16

Posh and snobby aren’t necessarily the same though.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 15/05/2021 20:17

Sorry, just realised focus on "snobby" not "posh" Blush.

HeronLanyon · 15/05/2021 20:19

redcurrant totally agree. Thought of a few places but they are simply posh. Not snobby in the slightest (outwardly anyway). Kind of think most truly posh places are not snobby. Snobby indicates a striving.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 15/05/2021 20:19

@RedcurrantPuff. I agree..."snobby" is more about consciously feeling superior.

wotchhha · 15/05/2021 20:20

Salcombe - went to a hotel restaurant there & it was awful, so snobbish.

mumIme · 15/05/2021 20:21

100% Oxford. So many snobs there, largely because of the university, of which most people in Oxford have zero connection to.

I'd also add in Newbury and Cheltenham.

glasshalfsomething · 15/05/2021 20:22

Wilmslow

InTheGreatGreenRoom · 15/05/2021 20:23

Agree with Horsham, West Sussex

It’s a strange place. Plenty of shitty shops nestling along side the Aston Martin and Patek Philippe retailers. I think it would like to be snobbier than it is though.
newtb · 15/05/2021 20:25

Altrincham - the Bowdon residents' assoc refused to have Trafford as part of their address. It's why Timperley, Altrincham and Bowdon have Cheshire as their address. They're all in Trafford.

joystir59 · 15/05/2021 20:25

South cliff.in Scarborough. Very snobby but crumbling into the sea. I live in an old fishing family's cottage across the bay in the original Old Town with the local drug dealers, but at least it's built on the rocky headland and will survive down the ages. Grin
