So pleased to see how the community came together for their neighbours in my home city today.

Police release men from immigration van blocking Glasgow street www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-57100259

Felt quite emotional watching the men being released from the van to all the cheers.

To do that today of all days in a Muslim community was just awful.

Shockingly bad timing and a disgusting policy. So proud of that community.

I hope the police don't face any backlash. It's the UK government that is truly to blame here.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2021 20:14

I love this. Eid Mubarak to all of them!

Gilead · 13/05/2021 20:19

Brilliant for doing this, so pleased. The government need a rethink.

GlasgowsGreen · 13/05/2021 20:20

Amazing result. Slightly terrifying at times. Unbelievable number of police. Fantastic outcome. This time.

massistar · 13/05/2021 20:39

Bloody love my home city.

GreenChips · 13/05/2021 21:12

Glasgow is a city of immigrants! Smile

The videos on Twitter of the 2 men emerging from the van made me feel a bit choked up

Liverpool threw the EDL out a while ago.

I think Liverpool and Glasgow share a history of immigration and bloody-mindedness that's great for these situations!

To the above poster, stop being so fucking goady. People came out en masse to prevent their neighbours from being taken to a detention centre. They gave the neighbours a bit of time to obtain legal representation, which is often lacking in these circumstances despite the Home Office failing to provide sufficient evidence as to why they conducted a raid in the first place. Yes there’s a pandemic, but sometimes morality takes precedent. Plus, outdoor transmission is minimal and large scale social events will soon be allowed as COVID restrictions lift.

paralysedbyinertia · 13/05/2021 23:12

Well done to the people of Glasgow!

Whoarethewho · 13/05/2021 23:13

What's the point of immigration control of they can't round up people who may have been here illegally?

hilbil21 · 13/05/2021 23:15

@Whoarethewho Exactly! I feel like I'm missing something..... although I am aware it clearly might be a heart/conscience Wink

midsomermurderess · 13/05/2021 23:17

It feels like a provocative act, a week after the SNP's strong showing at the pills; in Nichola Sturgeon's constituency, and at the start of Eid. Altogether very ugly.

36degrees · 13/05/2021 23:19

The man under the van, so incredibly brave. Proud to have been a Glaswegian for 12 years 💓 (pink heart for People Make Glasgow).

DipSwimSwoosh · 13/05/2021 23:21

Absolutely amazing! Can't believe it had to happen but heartening to see the response of the public, the police, even the BBC.

‘Round up’, like they’re escaped animals? Hmm

It won’t be a popular opinion, but I’m with you. We cannot be dictated to by mob rule, this is a dangerous road
Biscusting · 13/05/2021 23:31

@Whoarethewho and @hilbil21

Yea immigration should have power to deal with illegal immigrants.

But two Muslims, on Eid do you not think this is provocative? I doubt the people would have shown up in such number for a couple of guys that have just arrived in the country.

OllyBJolly · 13/05/2021 23:33

Proud to be Glaswegian today!

Trappedonanisland · 13/05/2021 23:36

So proud of my home city . This was disgusting behaviour by immigration and we dont take that crap. We welcome immigrants as we are a city of immigrants . I can't wait to move back . My son was at this today with his pals. Glasgow is the best city in the world .I agree with PP that Liverpool is a great city too. Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate it !❤️❤️

newnortherner111 · 14/05/2021 07:02

One of the things that makes me feel the SNP is the best argument against Scottish independence is the creation of one police force for the whole of Scotland. I doubt if such insensitivity in timing would have happened with many of the previous separate police forces.

AgentProvocateur · 14/05/2021 07:09

@newnortherner111 the police were only there to keep order once the protestors arrived. The police weren’t removing the men - that was 100% U.K. border control. The insensitive timing was no coincidence - the day the MSPs were swearing in, and on Eid in a predominantly Muslim area (although the two guys were Sikhs). It’s a big ‘fuck you’ from the home office.

Proud of my fellow Glaswegians.

Gilead · 14/05/2021 07:15

round up. Have you heard yourself?

Morgan12 · 14/05/2021 07:20

Round up immigrants? Jesus Christ I despair.

Brahumbug · 14/05/2021 07:34

Well done the people of Glasgow! The 'hostile environment' lives on. I don't agree that the timing was provocative, religious belief doesn't give you a free ride when it comes to legal action. What next, Christians can't be arrested over Easter? Plus they weren't muslims where they?
