Before anyone jumps down my throat for giving her body image issues, this is light hearted and I never say anything to her! But, I have an 8.5 year old DD and she has officially reached an adult size 4 in shoes - she is quite tall (91st centile - currently about 137/138cm tall) but even so these are big feet aren't they ? I'm a foot taller than her and only a size 5!
She's relatively likely to be an earlyish developer but hasn't yet had a giant growth spurt. So, can feet have a growth spurt before the rest of the child? Is she going to end up with gigantic feet? None of it matters of course, other than the endless cost of her growing out of shoes, but I'm interested to know if anyone else's kid has such big feet at such a tender age (on the plus size she's an outstanding swimmer - perhaps it's because she has natural flippers ;-) )

It is common for feet to grow before a growth spurt in height. DS1 grew so many shoe sizes when he was 10, but the height growth didn't come until a year later.

LadyDanburysHat · 07/05/2021 10:52

I have the opposite to you with my DD. She is almost 10, 135 cm and still a size 13 in shoes. Tiny feet

That's good to know, maybe she is just growing feet first....

Yup. My DD’s are a size 4 and 5 and DS a size 6 (almost 7). They’re 8, 9 and 11.

Aprilshowersandhail · 07/05/2021 10:57

At 13 my ds was a size 10. Now 17 he is a 12. Like having canoes in the hallway!!

IWouldntBother · 07/05/2021 10:58

I was a size 7 in my last year of primary school, so age 10/11, my feet stopped growing then (until pregnancy and now I'm an 8!).

ZednotZee · 07/05/2021 11:01

When I was aged two I had size ten feet. When I was aged 8 my feet were bigger than my mum's as I was a size 4 and she was a three. My whole family used to comment that my feet walked in to the room five minutes before I did.
My feet stopped growing at a 6.5/7 when I was twelve and now, at 5'9 my feet are the same size as my friends' who are three to four inches shorter than me!
Please don't give your xhild a complex about this issue as I still refer to myself as having big feet even now when its not true.

LakeShoreD · 07/05/2021 11:03

I had size 5 feet at age 10 and as an adult am only a 5 and a half. I was also very tall as a child, but stopped growing early too and am now only barely above average height. My nephew on the other hand was always tall with big feet and he’s now 16 and has to import his shoes from the US as there isn’t a very big range in his massive size where he lives (not UK). No way to predict it in my opinion!

zizl · 07/05/2021 11:09

My 9 year old is a 13 but he's noticed his shoes are tiny compared to others (changing indoor and outdoor shoes in school), so I bet she's not the only one in a 4!

StayingHere · 07/05/2021 11:13

@ZednotZee like I said in my op we never mention it so I'm pretty sure she won't end up with a complex!
I am just continually surprised by the big shoes in my hallway!

I think feet grow in spurts & we notice it more because of buying shoes.

My dd started secondary school with size 1 feet, which she had been since yr5.

It's now 8 months later & she's a size 4. She's only 142cm so I expect she'll start going upwards now!

cigarettesanddisappointment · 07/05/2021 11:20

My DD (just turned 9) also has sz 4 feet, I don't think it's that uncommon? Although my feet were a sz 8 before I started secondary school so canoe feet may just run in our family!

MrsPnut · 07/05/2021 11:22

My DD2 always had big feet but is now 14, wears a 9 and is 6' tall. I also have size 9 feet so we did think she might match mine. DD1 has size 7 feet.

Perhaps it's not that unusual then! Seems big to me given her current height but as someone said there is no predicting! No that it matters at all; her feet are just as lovely as the rest of her!!

My 14 year old DS has Size 12 feet.

I've told him not to grow anymore or he'll have to go into Ugly Special Shoes. They are massive canoes as it is!

😂 it is tempting to tell them to pack in the growing isn't it!

Get her swimming.
DD1 had big flipper feet (as she called them). Very fast in a pool, bit clumsy on land.
Totally in proportion now she is grown.

She is already a great swimmer and starting to swim competitively - the feet are a clear advantage!

My DS is also 8.5, the same height as your DD and he is in a size 3 - he has huge feet compared to all his friends!

So has my just turned 9 DD. I really don't think that's an unusual size. My 11 year old DS however, is complaining that his 8's are too small! She also likes swimming Grin

DioneTheDiabolist · 07/05/2021 12:18

When DS1 was born the midwife commented on the size of his feet.Blush He's now 14, 5'8 and wears size 11 shoes that he is incapable of putting away.Hmm

GreenTreeLeaves · 07/05/2021 12:23

My DS is 10 and size 6.5.

Hoppinggreen · 07/05/2021 12:25

My DD has size 5 feet by age 10.
She’s 16 now and they are still the same

Ds is 12 with size 11 feet and he’s still growing

mummymathsteacher · 07/05/2021 12:27

My 5 year old DS has adult size 3 feet!

BerniesMittens · 07/05/2021 12:28

I was size 6 shoe at 8. I'm now a 7.5 shoe at quite a lot older! Grin

It made school shoe shopping an interesting time as 6 was deemed to be adult size and styled accordingly. Smile
