My child has such big feet!! Anyone else?

Before anyone jumps down my throat for giving her body image issues, this is light hearted and I never say anything to her! But, I have an 8.5 year old DD and she has officially reached an adult size 4 in shoes - she is quite tall (91st centile - currently about 137/138cm tall) but even so these are big feet aren't they ? I'm a foot taller than her and only a size 5!
She's relatively likely to be an earlyish developer but hasn't yet had a giant growth spurt. So, can feet have a growth spurt before the rest of the child? Is she going to end up with gigantic feet? None of it matters of course, other than the endless cost of her growing out of shoes, but I'm interested to know if anyone else's kid has such big feet at such a tender age (on the plus size she's an outstanding swimmer - perhaps it's because she has natural flippers ;-) )

DS is 11, Yr 6 still, and is an adult 7.5 - 8. He's 5' 5" already. I dread to think what he'll end up as when he hits puberty!

@NauseousNancy

I have a (just turned) 8 year old girl with size 6 feet...pain trying to find Velcro school shoes for a skinny giant foot since she can’t tie her laces yet!
Yes my DD can't tie her laces so we have this issue too. Even worse I live in Asia so big footed children are rare in the local population so I have very limited choice!

My 8.5yr old DS is 140cm and has size 4.5 feet. Lots of the girls and boys in his class are similar height with same shoe size.

I'm sure she'll end up all in proportion! Expensive feet though as you'll be taxed due to having to buy adult ones soon 😑. I wouldn't have thought large foot size would relate to being an early developer though?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 08/05/2021 00:41

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow

my mother has a theory that all these new shoes every three months just encourages big feet and TALL children, like when you put plants in bigger pots and they go wild!

Like the opposite of foot binding.

Brilliant! In fact yes, I blame Clarks 😂😂
FrostyGirl66 · 08/05/2021 00:42

My 10 yr old dd is only a size 13 (she's slightly short for her age)

My 6 yr old dd is size 12 (average height)

I'm only adult size 4 at 5'5" !

TheTeenageYears · 08/05/2021 00:52

DS has huge feet, was a mens UK8.5 at age 10 and his feet stopped growing at probably age 14. He is a 13.5

DD's feet were a size 6 by the time she was 11 but haven't grown since even though she is still growing at 16.

One thing to remember is currently you buy shoes with growing room and if you generally go with a thumbs width at some point she might go down half or even a size once her feet stop growing. DD's feet are the same size as mine but at one point we were buying her bigger shoes to allow for growing room. It became obvious when she could still fit in my shoes a year on that her feet had stopped growing and her shoes were too big if not growing.

That's interesting - perhaps kids are just getting bigger. We're in Asia so DD is comparatively massive to her classmates. There is only one child as tall as her in her class and she is German. There's no point in comparing from that POV but if she was in the UK perhaps she'd be in good company with her feet and general height! We're back in the UK so I'll soon see!

oh I only meant with the early developer that perhaps her height growth spurt will be coming soon so maybe her feet (and quite big hands!) are having the first growth spurt before the rest of her..

For a while, one of my sons had the same size feet as his age...Size 11 at 11, size 12 at 12, 13 and 13 ..luckily his feet stopped at a 14. He is and has always been very tall for his age ( 98th centile from about 12 weeks old).

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/05/2021 01:08

My daughter had adult size 6 feet at 9. She was only 3ft 8! She was in age 6-7 clothes and her shoes looked like giant tug boats. Now at a whopping 4ft 11 she nicks my size 7 shoes (I’m a statuesque- gnomes count as statues, right? - 5ft 2. My adult son has size 7 feet too (5ft 10) so there has been much trainer & croc swaps over the years!

Side note - there was a hint of Sideshow Bob about my DD & I as kids...

StayingHere · 08/05/2021 01:14

Well, it's morning time here where we live so we're off to buy new trainers for DD and DS seeing as they've grown out of the ones I bought 5 MINUTES AGO! Shoes are dead expensive here too, especially school shoes - looking forward to the comparatively low clothes/shoes prices in the UK in a few weeks!

School shoes here are a nightmare. Academy rules say black, no coloured stitching, no heels, no boots. Boots would be so much easier. Finding a pair of size 9/9.5 that the school accept and my 14 yr old daughter will actually deign to wear is impossible. Shoezone did one last year and we bought 2 pairs.
Yesterday though dd uttered the dreaded "I need new shoes" so may have to go shopping myself.

user1494050295 · 08/05/2021 07:42

OP I hear you. My dd is now 11 and has size 7.5 feet. Buying shoes are a pain. M and s is my friend. I have 9.5 and her dad has 10.5. My father has size 12.5. She is fine about the size because the retailers offer more sizes now. When I grew up it was just Lilly and skinner. Also get her into swimming. All the Olympic swimmers are born with flippers

UntamedShrew · 08/05/2021 08:04

My DD is 9 and a size 6!!! She is very tall but still… and yes a great swimmer with her natural flippers Grin

MiloAndEddie · 08/05/2021 08:16

My 5 year old is a size 13! Hoping she slows down a bit soon

Vinorosso74 · 08/05/2021 08:25

My DD was size 4 at that age. She seems to have started each school year with the corresponding shoe size. Currently Y6 and size 6. She's 163cm tall. I'm a size 5/5.5 and my feet haven't grown since I was 12.
I noticed a lot of kids feet seem to grow before they grow upwards.

CHiSOCG · 08/05/2021 08:25

My 9 year old is in a size 1.5! Now I’m worried she has tiny feet!

Temp023 · 08/05/2021 08:30

I cried the day my DD grew out of her size 9s (not in front of her) I have size 10 feet and it has been miserable, although now it is mainly just expensive.
I do feel guilty for us both being over 6ft, it made me very unhappy as a teen and I can tell she is struggling. I love it now, but that really isn’t helping her at the moment. Sad

TokyoSushi · 08/05/2021 08:32

DD is almost 8, her shoes are size 11, she sits next to a girl who has size 4, we come in all shapes and sizes!!

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 08/05/2021 08:34

My 8.5 year old is also a size 4. She’s going to be really tall!

Nobranothanks · 08/05/2021 08:45

I was the big footed child!! Size 5 by aged 8 (no pretty shoes for me!). Ladies 7.5 at 11. Size 9 by 13. It was horrible back then because most ladies shoes stopped at a 7....so glad that things have changed now!! Although unfortunately, as a grown up I've got size 10.5 and v wide feet so still no pretty shoes for me!!!

BikeRunSki · 08/05/2021 08:48

DD, 9.5, 149 cm tall, went off the top of height charts when she was 2, size 6.
DS, 1.5, 165 cm, size 8-9.

I am fractionally taller than DS, and shoe size 9.
We all have giant feet.

BikeRunSki · 08/05/2021 08:50

DS, 1.5, 165 cm, size 8-9.^

Ahem, DS is 12.5.... he would be very big for 18 months!

bumblingbovine49 · 08/05/2021 08:53
@ZednotZee like I said in my op we never mention it so I'm pretty sure she won't end up with a complex!
I am just continually surprised by the big shoes in my hallway!
Try having a 13 year old with size 10 shoes in the hall. Now he is 16 they are an 11 . I know he is boy but his dad takes an 8 as do I. DH and I can share shoes ( Grin) as could DS briefly while he was about 11 but not any more.
