Before anyone jumps down my throat for giving her body image issues, this is light hearted and I never say anything to her! But, I have an 8.5 year old DD and she has officially reached an adult size 4 in shoes - she is quite tall (91st centile - currently about 137/138cm tall) but even so these are big feet aren't they ? I'm a foot taller than her and only a size 5!
She's relatively likely to be an earlyish developer but hasn't yet had a giant growth spurt. So, can feet have a growth spurt before the rest of the child? Is she going to end up with gigantic feet? None of it matters of course, other than the endless cost of her growing out of shoes, but I'm interested to know if anyone else's kid has such big feet at such a tender age (on the plus size she's an outstanding swimmer - perhaps it's because she has natural flippers ;-) )

Dd was out of child sizes by 6. Last year of primary she was a 7. She's 14 now, 5ft 10 and a size 9/10. Fortunately they seem to have stopped growing.

DS is 2.5 and an infant 9, I'm a seven, 5'9 and DH at 6'4 has oddly small size 9 feet.
My best friend's five year old is in a one and a half (friend is male 6'4 and has size 13 feet so it's clear where it comes from in that instance). I do think feet are generally bigger these days, my aunts and grandma all have small feet size 3/4

My 12 year old DD is an adult size 8 shoe - she's about 5 foot 7, clothes size 10

my mother has a theory that all these new shoes every three months just encourages big feet and TALL children, like when you put plants in bigger pots and they go wild!

Like the opposite of foot binding.

happytoday73 · 07/05/2021 21:43

My son is 8 1/2 and a size 5 1/2......he has slowed down.... Was a size 4 when still 7. We aren't that tall..

Yubaba · 07/05/2021 21:50

Ds1 is 12 and he has 8.5 size feet, he’s also 5’5.
He was a size 5.5 at the start of lockdown 1, and he’s grown 4 inches in the last year, he’s like a weed!
Ds2 on the other hand is tiny in comparison, he’s 10 and only has size 2 feet.

Grin Your mum might have a point.

DS is 12yo and a size 10. He just seems to have had a real growth spurt... but all in his feet recently. He was a 6/7 for ages, then went up a size every couple of months. I kept telling him I was sure he was exaggerating them being too small already, but when I checked he was right enough.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 07/05/2021 22:11

Almost 50 years ago I was handing my outgrown size six shoes down to my mum as my 10 year olds feet continued to grow. They were size 9 when I was eleven and it was almost impossible to find shoes in my size.
I used t have to travel to a town 20 miles away where they ordered in shoes in my size and even then they often didn’t fit and the style was more suitable for adult business women then a scruffy little school girl.
I was a tall child for those days but still only around 5’1” at the end of primary school (5’10” a year later but that’s a different story)

LOL 😂 It is certainly a strategy for selling more shoes!
NursieBernard · 07/05/2021 22:22

I don't think that's particularly big? Plenty of boys and girls in DS's friendship group of 9 year olds are the same size.

Hellocatshome · 07/05/2021 22:24

DS1 was in a size 12 when he was 13, he is now 14 and hasn't complained of his shoes being too tight so I'm hoping they may have stopped growing!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 07/05/2021 22:27

I started secondary at 11 with size 5 ish feet and still wear a 5 now at 38! I’m also only a couple of inches taller than I was then as well. I think girls have their growth spurts younger than boys sometimes. Ds went into an adult size 6 at age 10 (so unfair as I’ve been paying adult prices with VAT since then as well!) He’s now 14 and growing out of his size 9’s.

Timeisavirtue · 07/05/2021 22:36

Ds13 has gone from a size 4 in year 5 to a size 9 in year 8..
So in 3 years he’s gone up 5 sizes. The most recent one being I brought new size 8 shoes in October as his 7 were too small and now I’ve just had to buy him size 9 in March

Timeisavirtue · 07/05/2021 22:37

My daughter is 8.5 and she’s only size 2 yet her best friend is only just turned 8 and is size 3.5

Iheartmysmart · 07/05/2021 22:43

I remember DS going up a whole shoe size in a couple of weeks one year. Bought school shoes in late August and when we had a last minute uniform try on at the beginning of September the bloody things were too small. He had really wide feet as well so we’d already gone up half a size to get the width. He’s been a 9 for years now.

On the other hand I started secondary school at 4ft 11 and a size 3 and finished six years later at exactly the same height/size.

MrsCalypsoGrant · 07/05/2021 22:45

My DD only got a few weeks in first shoes, she was into school age shoes by 13 months. She's a size 5 at age 8 now.

I was the same - my feet were considered huge when I was her age almost 40 years ago - I finished up at an 8, 9 in boots. DD was conceived via fertility treatment. When I saw her stringy legs & boat feet on the scan I said to the consultant "well there hasn't been a mix up in the lab - she definitely takes after me" 🦶😀

ALevelhelp · 07/05/2021 22:48

My experience is that feet grow first. DS1 is 6ft 2 and has size 12/13 feet. His feet have been that size since he was about 5ft 9.

DS2 is 5ft 7 and has size 9.5 feet, I'm thinking he's going to be as tall, if not taller, than his brother

qualitygirl · 07/05/2021 22:50

My dd is the opposite she's 8 with a size 12 (childs) foot ...they are tiny!! 🙈

😂😂 that's excellent. I like the concept of them filling the space you allow them. Maybe it works for clothes too - buy huge ones and they will grow tall!

I have a (just turned) 8 year old girl with size 6 feet...pain trying to find Velcro school shoes for a skinny giant foot since she can’t tie her laces yet!

Nodal · 07/05/2021 23:53

@Aprilshowersandhail

At 13 my ds was a size 10. Now 17 he is a 12. Like having canoes in the hallway!!
Omg my 13y old son is a size 11 already and almost 6ft - it's crazy. Does make me wonder about hormones in the water supply ..
Feather12 · 07/05/2021 23:55

My kids were like puppies, their feet were huge. They have caught up all over in adulthood so no longer look like hobbits.

SignMyStookie · 08/05/2021 00:04

DD1 at 16 wears a 9/9.5 but for her height (5ft11) her feet actually look a bit small for the rest of her when she doesn't have shoes on.

Dd2 and 3 both wear 6.5 in shoes but DD2 is a 7 in football boots and DD3 needs to move up to an 8. It's very confusing!
