Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

M&S triple toffee delights. And their Deltas.

Gliblet · 04/05/2021 16:25

@SirDidymus

Those hot custard puddings that you sprinkled biscuit crumbs on. Came in different flavours but cannot remember what they were called?
Oh god yes, the lemon one was to die for (actually it probably tasted like boiled bathroom cleaner but my nostalgia-brain remembers it being wonderful).

I miss the little individual frozen mousse pots that you could buy in those long stacking packets from places like Bejam, and white 'chocolate' skulls with red syrupy filling. Actually I suspect what I really miss is the days when I thought a cheese hamwich or Bernard Matthews mini kievs were a gourmet treat and no-one corrected me or judged me for liking them Grin

Heinz toast toppers, both ham & cheese and chicken& mushroom.

Pizza Toast.

I spend many spare hours trying to recreate these things.

Wise words, and probably very true about the Birds Eye frozen pizza I thought was the dogs bollocks in 1980.

I suspect they just wouldn’t taste the same anyway. They never do... ☹️

Frederik33 · 04/05/2021 16:35

Does anyone remember Honey Bear (I'm 52!). It was like a set honey spread and came in a white plastic carton with little bears going right round it. I remember my Mum having to buy me a new carton every week. Never heard of it since.

Frederik33 · 04/05/2021 16:36

I remember the frozen mousse pots either pink or chocolate we used to have them a lot as a weekday pudding.

Silveroriole · 04/05/2021 16:40

Symbol Savoury biscuits from the 1950s. Like a large round cheeselet with holes that you could push the butter through to make snakes.

Spied · 04/05/2021 16:41

I do, it was my sister's favourite!

MustBeTheWine · 04/05/2021 16:48

Mars bisc &. Used get this in my lunch box while in school. It had Bisc & twix Bisc & m&ms, I think there were variations but can't remember. Used to love them!

Sun lolly! They were triangle ice lollys in a cardboard sleeve you'd pop in the freezer. They have similar things today but doesn't taste like sun lolly.

Toffos. Went through a period in my childhood I was obsessed with toffos.

Agree with another PP about sunny delight. Tastes absolutely nothing like it used to do. I really miss the original one.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 04/05/2021 16:53

@Vickles20 I've just checked and it's the skinny potato ones that they do not the thicker maize ones

DinosApple · 04/05/2021 16:56

Fish curry my grandma used to make. That and pork vindaloo. The vindaloo was a bit hot when I was little, but I could easily eat it now.
The fish curry was delicious too, .

I haven't had pork vindaloo for about 30 years, since well before grandma died. I've got her recipe, but she always used to add things and not write them down 🤦‍♀️.

Munchmallows from the 70's.
Red and silver wrapper, marshmallow on a soft biscuit base and covered in milk chocolate. Not sure who made them and I can't remember really when I last had them :(
