Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

I've not seen an Entenmann's chocolate cake for years; not my childhood, but that of my children.

Rarotonga2 · 04/05/2021 13:17

Thornton's fondant chocolate mouse

Does anyone remember Romany biscuits, they were like chocolate fudge sandwich biscuits and they were just amazing. They don’t make them anymore god knows why. I still think about them obsessively from time to time..all the time.

Aussie here. We used to have a Chocolate bar called a Polly Waffle. It was log shaped. Inside was marshmallow. Covered in a layer of crisp wafer then covered in chocolate. They don’t make them anymore. I’m craving one now,

CaraherEIL · 04/05/2021 13:23

Horlick’s malted chocolate bars- just remember these!

CaraherEIL · 04/05/2021 13:23

Toasted coconut boost bar

Aprilshowersandhail · 04/05/2021 13:27

Jars of Horlicks when it was granules... Used to eat it from the jar at dgm's house.. Then it became sold in powder form.

@Luckingfovely

Horlicks Tablets

Ice Magic for ice cream

Tang powder for drinks

Horlicks tablets, YES!

Also, orange juice powder; I think it might have been Libby's Orange C? Lovely stuff, probs stuffed with additives! Grin

aliensprig · 04/05/2021 13:30

Heinz hot puddings that came in a tin. Do they still do those?! Couldn't eat them now but I miss them so much.

Aprilshowersandhail · 04/05/2021 13:32

Omg those tinned puddings!! I craved them when pregnant with dd. I could eat 3! Blush
Accounts for the majority of the 2 stone weight gain when dd was only 6 pound!!

CaraherEIL · 04/05/2021 13:34

They still do the hot puddings in a tin!

starfishy · 04/05/2021 13:37

@idontlikealdi

Oh my god Gino Ginelli!

Safeway used to do a smoked ham and chicken sandwich and it was our Saturday treat, it was so nice. I mourn it regularly.

Tandoori crisps, they were in a purple bag, can't remember the brand.

M&S Chicken tikka sandwich.

Yes M&S chicken tikka sandwich!

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!

Shinysilverlamp · 04/05/2021 13:42

Corn Pops, I really craved these in my first pregnancy. I found a great dupe by Asda and bought loads of them but looks like they’ve been discontinued now.

Yogaposer · 04/05/2021 13:46

A chocolate bar called "Secret", nobody else seems to remember it but it was absolutely heavenly.
Also, Etenmanns desserts.

DialSquare · 04/05/2021 13:52

Burtons cheese and tomato potato puffs. Especially the little clumps of the powdered flavour in the corners of the bag!

VoyageInTheDark · 04/05/2021 13:53

They used to do a Heinz baked bean pizza in the 90s. I loved those!

Theforest · 04/05/2021 13:56

Crisps like Piglets or Skydivers

zebrarobot · 04/05/2021 13:57

Irn bru bar

TheBestSpoon · 04/05/2021 13:57

@yogaposer I remember Secret bars! My grandad always used to keep a packet of them in his fridge and give me one when we visited. So nice with that mousse filling.

cheeseisthebest · 04/05/2021 13:59

I remember secret bars! They were lovely.

Gingerkittykat · 04/05/2021 14:10

Minute steaks were great, much better than having to chew through roast beef in a roast.

The still do Irn Bru bars, I got one the other week from a sweet shop.

I miss savoury popcorn, they sold salt and vinegar and cheese and onion for a while in little bags for about 50 calories which were great when you were on a diet.

Potato puffs.

Toast toppers.

cream soda made with sugar and not sweeteners. I got a can of expensive craft cream soda with rhubarb recently but it cost £1.50 from the corner shop so won't be a regular purchase.

bellropes · 04/05/2021 14:10

KP Tobago Chilli Nuts. They came in a little metal container and were proper spicy. They had a lovely flavour, not just hot.

Birds Trifle before they started using artificial sweetener.

Those 70s peanut bars which were stuck together using some sort of toffee goo. I think they came in a brown transparent wrapper.

SoRuff63 · 04/05/2021 14:11

Aztec bars - similar to a mars bar but much nicer.

Creamola - came in a cardboard box and you made it like you would make a custard. It was yellow and tasted like custard but contained ground rice so more substantial. A staple mid-week after-school pudding in our house.
