Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

My mum used to make rissoles which were amazing! I suppose I could make them and freeze some.

CarlaH · 04/05/2021 14:16

@Ilikecheeseontoast

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!
Steakwich?

Anything my nanna made. Apple pie, Dundee cake, steak pie, cherry faery cakes, scouse, beef roasts, bara brith, bakewell tarts.

Jampot1 · 04/05/2021 14:23

I’ve definitely seen Ice Magic in Waitrose

TiptopJ · 04/05/2021 14:29

Golden grahams cereal. They've been discontinued in the UK apparently but they were my favourite breakfast cereal

Soubriquet · 04/05/2021 14:32

Cheesy nibbles! They had a picture of a mouse on the front. Found them once when I was pregnant with dd (so 9 years ago) and I bought every single packet there was. They were only 10p.

Disco’s when they had the special running with the “bomb” packet flavour. No one seems to remember these though

FuzzyPup · 04/05/2021 14:33

Campino sweets

Echo bars

Dream chocolate bars

Mars delights

Sading · 04/05/2021 14:37

Spooks malted milk biscuits with shed loads of artificial colourings in them. There was a sticker in each pack of a spooky monster.

Wellysock · 04/05/2021 14:38

@sobriquet those discos were my favourite crisps ever. Nothing else can live up to them.

Wellysock · 04/05/2021 14:39

Bipbopbee · 04/05/2021 14:46

Cabana bars

Some sort of orange flavoured baby porridge/rice that came in a sachet... was amazing!

Micro chips that were flavoured, like bacon or cheese and onion.

Luckingfovely · 04/05/2021 14:48

@Soubriquet yes those were the best crisps ever!!

I had the weirdest flashback craving (also pregnant) to a bird's eye boil in the bag spaghetti bolognese that I used to 'make' after I'd been to my after school babysitting job 😂 they might still make it but I've never dared try it as most of the things from back then are crap now- findus crispy pancakes and Birdseye chicken fingers are grim now compared with the old days!

I wouldn't say no to some Bovril crisps though. Or Walkers pizza flavour too. Or a Secret chocolate bar...

Bipbopbee · 04/05/2021 14:49

It was this!! Milupa cereal!

@Knittedfairies

I've not seen an Entenmann's chocolate cake for years; not my childhood, but that of my children.
God yes. They were wonderful cakes. Wonder where they went.
YessicaHaircut · 04/05/2021 14:56

@Yogaposer

A chocolate bar called "Secret", nobody else seems to remember it but it was absolutely heavenly. Also, Etenmanns desserts.
@Yogaposer I came on to say those exact two things! Secret bars were incredible, nobody seems to remember them though. You can still get Entenmann’s cakes but only in the US or for crazy prices on eBay (yes, I have looked!)

Funny face ice cream lollies - we used to have them when we walked back home from the beach (if we'd behaved all afternoon).

What I really miss are my mum's cheese scones - her hands are seized up with arthritis now so she can't make them and I just don't have the knack.
