Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Does anyone remember Romany biscuits
Yes, I came on to say those! God, they were amazing. Really rich.

Fish n Chips crisps (well, biscuits/crackers really). Still exist but I swear they're different now.

And Piglets.

Can someone talk me through this cucumber sandwich spread? Sounds grim tbh. I've only ever had one real cucumber sandwich that I've enjoyed though, done right they are perfecto.

Munchmallows from the 70's. Red and silver wrapper, marshmallow on a soft biscuit base and covered in milk chocolate. Not sure who made them and I can't remember really when I last had them :(
Tunnocks tea cakes? You can still get them.

Controversial but I think the chicken and chips were as good if not better than than the fish...

@mrshonda

Can you still get Old Jamaica chocolate bars, flavoured with rum? They were lovely.

I'm sure I've seen them on Amazon.

No, not Tunnock's. I think the ones Hanging is thinking of were rectangular and the filling was more marshmallowy and not as soft as Tunnock's.

DialSquare · 04/05/2021 17:23

They also sound familiar now you've said that @Twenty2

HangingOverTheEdge · 04/05/2021 17:23

@DialSquare

Broadly similar. I should have googled:
munchmallow.uk/

When I was a teenager they used to do a box of three mini cheese and tomato pizzas in Tescos. I loved them. they discontinued them, and the mini pizzas that they have now dont taste as good.

Does anyone remember the brand name of mini pizzas , that Tesco would have stocked around 1998. I cant remember it and would love to look up a photo online.

AngeloMysterioso · 04/05/2021 17:25

Agree with everyone lamenting the loss of pre-sugar tax Lucozade. I’ll never forgive Jamie Oliver.

The chocolate teacakes from m&s are very similar to munchmallows although I did find original and white chocolate munchmallows last Christmas in B&M!

My Mum would sometimes buy me a microwave ready meal as a treat, I think it was called bats and balls? Tennis racket shaped pasta with little chunks of ham/ bacon, in a cheese sauce. It was delicious.

Those yoghurts with a hole in the middle of the pot for a little toy. Frufoo I think?!

I really, really miss homepride cheese and bacon potato bake. So much that it makes me feel sad.

Turkey twizzlers - never been the same without em. Never going to be the same either

Caramel81 · 04/05/2021 17:28

Sara Lee chocolate gateaux (we had it every Saturday night when I was a child).

IntermittentParps · 04/05/2021 17:30

8dpwoah, I'd forgotten about the chicken and chips!
I'm sure I liked them, but my heart is with the fish n chips.

CheapOne · 04/05/2021 17:31

I used to love an ice lolly that was like a strawberry split, but had raspberries stuck on the outside. So ice cream in the middle, then raspberry ice then actual raspberries.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 04/05/2021 17:32

Batgers Chinese Figs - we used to get these as a Christmas treat as a kid in the 80s, my Dad used to have them as a little boy too (in the 1940s!). They were fig jellies shaped into fig shapes. Really juicy and sweet, I loved them! Sadly it seems they were made by one English factory that shut down in the 90s. I really miss them, Xmas isn’t quite the same (well, ok that’s a bit much, but I’d really bloody love some!).

Maybe I'm thinking of something else, then? I definitely remember something like I described. I seem to recall a biscuity base, piped into two joined pieces? I'm old, my memory's not what it was! Grin

Birds Eye Chicken Supreme

Lean Cuisine meals ...I lived off those when I was in my late teens, early 20s, no wonder I never weighed above 9 stone!

Supermousse

Heinz Toast Toppers

Toaster Pockets

Jdhshekr · 04/05/2021 17:35

I remember the Lovely chocolate mousse things with the blob of cream on top but I didn’t like them! I was also too impatient to let them defrost so used to attempt to eat them frozen.

I really miss something from M&S good hall in the 80s - they used to sell packs of three chocolate desserts (that was what they were called - ‘chocolate desserts’) They were like a chocolate mousse but without bubbles. Almost blancmangey but a much nicer texture. Brown and orange packaging. Yorkie desserts are the closest I’ve ever found to them, or the chocolate bit from a Rolo dessert. But not quite the same. I crave them regularly.

TTCat39 · 04/05/2021 17:35

@SirDidymus

Those hot custard puddings that you sprinkled biscuit crumbs on. Came in different flavours but cannot remember what they were called?
I had completely forgotten about these, and I loved them too!
tedsletterofthelaw · 04/05/2021 17:36

Golden Grahams

Sun Lollies

Libby's Orange C (you could still get that until recently Sad)

Original Sunny Delight

Asda used to do these mini Cornish pasties from the deli counter that were amazing

I can't remember the name but you used to get yoghurts with different monster faces on each pot, I loved those!
