Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Yes to the butter Ready Break, that was gorgeous. Nobody but me and my brother seem to remember Skydiver crisps. The salt and vinegar were fabulous and made our mouths feel blistered.

IntermittentParps · 10/05/2021 18:23

Oh yes, I remember salt and vinegar Skydiver crisps! They were powerful, weren't they? Grin

I do - and snaps (with a dragon on the packet). Also space raiders.

Eifel tower lemonade crystals - made very lemony, very sharp drink. Lovely!

Spangles

Breakfast biscuits made by Huntley and Palmer I think. Sold loose from a big tin.

Lucky numbers selection - quite unlike anything on sale today

Cheesy Moments - a bar snack made from crispy outer shell and filled with cheesy paste. Moreish

In Australia, in the 1960’s, my mum used to get scone dough in a can, and slice it, it’s in a roll, then bake.
Think scones, jam and cream. The roll can thing was made by Kraft.
Anyone I mention it to now, say they have never heard of it.

@toffeebutterpopcorn

Yawn.
Great contribution 😂😂

You really had to see the previous post to get the full effect!

I bought Creamola Foam from a random little sweet shop last week. Me and my sister had been talking about it as I was having a strange pregnancy craving for it all of a sudden.

It’s absolutely disgusting!! Paid 6 quid for the pleasure as well!! 🙈😂

Normando91 · 11/05/2021 22:24

@Nyala

I just wish I could get citrus polo's from somewhere!
Omg, yes!!
FromHereToModernity · 11/05/2021 22:26

Citrus polos - are they like fruit polos? Loved them.

Blacktothepink · 11/05/2021 22:58

Spangles
Findus lean cuisine frozen vegetable lasagne...loved those from Bejams in the 80’s
I’ve just signed a petition to bring back ready salted chipsticks 🤣

About 1999 or so McDonald’s did an Indian takeaway menu and they did these amazing korma chicken burgers in two slices of naan bread that were absolutely heavenly! I would do anything for those to come back!! There’s an episode of Rick and Morty where Rick obsessed over McDonald’s Mulan Szechuan sauce - the korma burgers are like that for me.

Ricicles with marshmallows in them - so much better than Lucky Charms (which I always thought tasted peppery.

A korma sauce - maybe Knorrs or Chicken Tonight - it came in two jars, the top jar had a cumin type paste you fried the chicken in first and it was gorgeous, sometimes I’d lick the sauce off the chicken before adding the korma (cooking for myself, obviously).

I’m sure there used to be a bacon version of the Smiths salt n shake crisps.

Delicious raspberry mousse called Prize Italiano.

Nat6999 · 12/05/2021 03:11

Proper Lucozade before Jamie Oliver ruined it.
Vesta beef curry, I used to have this every Friday for tea when I was a kid, my mum let me get it ready myself, I used to add tomato & extra sultanas.

HenryHonda2007 · 12/05/2021 12:56

@Ilikecheeseontoast

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!
Mmmmm yes 😋. With fried onions ….on toast. They sell something similar at the butchers, but obviously proper meat, not processed. Might have to take a trip..

@HeechulOppa

Thank God! For years I've been trying to find someone else who remembers Prize Italiano...couldn't even find it via Google and was starting to think I'd imagined it!

You've also reminded me of (albeit not from childhood)...

Jacket potato toppers...like a toast topper but for spuds. I used to have the chicken tikka one at least once a week when I was a student.

Schwarz used to do an amazing sachet mix for szechuan chicken...really fragrant and subtle, nothing like the gloomy bright orange stuff in jars.

Subway used to do a boneless bbq portrait sandwich...it was one of very few things I actively wanted to eat whilst pregnant with DD 17 years ago.

ChameleonCircuit · 12/05/2021 18:09

Breaded triangles of mashed potato with cheese inside - can’t remember what they were called. Also, Farlene. I think it was baby porridge, but I loved that stuff!

ChameleonCircuit · 12/05/2021 18:11

Oh, and Ice Magic is still around, it’s just called Crackin’!

Sobloodyexhausted · 12/05/2021 18:15

Saucy Sponges! 😋

Sainsbury’s fresh pasta. Walnut and Gorgonzola tortellini.

Not from my childhood but disappeared all the same.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 15/05/2021 07:54

@BrownEyedGirl80 I'm sure i saw a big bag of ready salted chipsticks in Aldi, but I might have been dreaming 🤣🤣

toffeebutterpopcorn · 15/05/2021 08:13

M&S do a version of chipsticks I think.

MingeofDeath · 15/05/2021 08:17

@CaraherEIL.
Oh yes! Romany creams were my favourite.They were alway hard to find back in the day though.

Cornishsky · 15/05/2021 22:13

Golden Nugget cereal in the 70’s! Much bigger and nicer than the version sold now. Milk used to make the outside soft and fluffy and the middle stayed crunchy.

klfahah · 16/05/2021 20:09

wheelz crisps from Kwik saves,
noodle doodles spaghetti, Riva chocolate bars, Burton's potato puffs, toffos, Greggs fresh cream cakes especially the strawberry tarts. steak Canadians.
