Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

AngeloMysterioso · 04/05/2021 10:31

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Spam fritters from my school canteen. A slab of spam deep fried in batter, it was frigging delicious. I don't eat meat anymore but still crave those things.

Does anyone remember Honey Bear (I'm 52!). It was like a set honey spread and came in a white plastic carton with little bears going right round it. I remember my Mum having to buy me a new carton every week. Never heard of it since.
First person ever who also remembers honey bear spread! ( I am a similar age). I also remember having a chocolate spread in similar shape white pot.

Thanks lola, I’m off to Morrison’s!

All these replies and no one has mentioned Sports or Iced Sports biscuits?!?!

Sugar Puffs (think they've gone now?)

Bones/Fangs crisps

Sweetheart dessert (think it was like yoghurt in a tin)

Tinned puddings - tapioca (frog spawn), macaroni (hoop shaped).

I'm sure that as a child in the 70s baby food in tins had a really over processed weird but nice taste (I had a much younger cousin). V disappointed in the 90s that baby food in tins or jars was just a bland version of real food!

Things I don't miss - can't believe I actually fed my daughter powdered cheese and tomato that you mixed with milk (Cow & Gate?). Smelled like sick!

@mrshonda

Can you still get Old Jamaica chocolate bars, flavoured with rum? They were lovely.
Amazon sell them as Bournville Old Jamaica. My husband bought me one the other day. Took me back 😋
witch000 · 09/05/2021 16:57

cheese and onion pop tarts

@Ilikecheeseontoast

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!
I loved them too. We thought we were really posh having a steak sandwich lol.
mrshonda · 09/05/2021 17:20

The frozen food shop near us used to sell the Minute Steaks, they called them Steak Canadians. Yes, they were lovely as a hot sandwich filling!

Nyala · 10/05/2021 08:31

I just wish I could get citrus polo's from somewhere!

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 10/05/2021 09:47

Splicer bars
Styx crisps
Raspberry creamola foam without the sweeteners!!
Bernard Mathews turkey steaks
My mother's home made chips from the chip pan!
Heinz tinned vegetable salad
Golden cup chocolate bars
Cadburys silk bars (individual strawberry creams)
Cheese moments

Lol, sounds like I had an unhealthy diet but I didn't! We ate proper healthy home cooked meals but it's the treats you remember lol

Soubriquet · 10/05/2021 11:21

Anyone remember those ice cream sauces magic something you use to put on and it went hard?!
Ice Magic. @JillinSwindon; you can still get Vesta Chow Mein in Poundland and similar cheap shops. @MagicSummer; the fruit sweets were Fruit Bon-bons. Some pick-n-mix shops have them.
IntermittentParps · 10/05/2021 12:35

I loved Pyramints.

h2obab and Clevs, I also remember and mentioned Piglets. I used to stand them up in a line on the sofa arm.

loopylindi · 10/05/2021 14:56

I bought some a couple of weeks ago as I was on a nostalgia trip. It didn't taste the same as I remembered it. I didn't know it had been reformulated.

Gracesquirrel · 10/05/2021 16:03

Bovril Crisps
Liver & Bacon Toastie Toppers
Thorntons Fruit Rock
Fruit Sensations - Boiled sweets that had jam in the middle
Ready Salted Chip Sticks
Ginsters Buffet Bar (pork sausage meat, filled with crisp coleslaw, soft cheese & wrapped in breadcrumbs)
Minute Steaks
Dried Pasta that came in a box in a mushroom flavour sauce - I REALLY miss those - the packet ones are NOT the same even if you coud get "just" mushroom.
Also Batchelors Mushroom Rice with peppers - they just stopped it without warning - I used that as a side dish, as part of a main meal risottos type dish and as a lunch for me on the go - nothing has ever come close to replacing it.

God yes, I'd forgotten those.
Kind of weird really, but I did love them.

Aprilwasverywet · 10/05/2021 16:24

@bellropes

KP Tobago Chilli Nuts. They came in a little metal container and were proper spicy. They had a lovely flavour, not just hot.

Birds Trifle before they started using artificial sweetener.

Those 70s peanut bars which were stuck together using some sort of toffee goo. I think they came in a brown transparent wrapper.

They were 'nutty' bars, umm lovely

Can you imagine a bar covered in peanuts these days? You'd be scared to take a child down the aisle in case the had a reaction!
