Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Anyone remember Banjo bars? I think they were a wafer with chopped nuts and milk chocolate or coconut and plain chocolate.

Maggiesfarm · 08/05/2021 18:46

I don't remember Banjo bars but I don't like nuts so wouldn't have been interested.

I do remember Bar Six.

lollipoprainbow · 08/05/2021 18:46

@GlomOfNit yes loved the old style fruit gums ! I really don't like the fruit shaped ones you get now.

Texan bars were good. And you see off my Christmas card list of you don’t like nuts...

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 18:48

I remember dad getting us something that was like as if you got a few chocolates out of a box, aid them all sitting together then melted the bottom so they stuck together. It may have been a milk tray?

The chocolates were barf but I enjoyed the style of the bar...

And KP Wickers crisps, prawn cocktail flavour. Like tangy little Shreddies!

ladylockdown · 08/05/2021 18:55

@Glittersparkle76

The red Cadbury boost bars, they had a coconut type filling and were divine!!
Omg these!!! The (old style Cadbury) chocolate was sooo crumbly on top & the coconut & biscuit combo amazing.
WeeFae · 08/05/2021 18:59

Sainsburys used to do a Strawberry Pops cereal, turned the milk into a milkshake! Kellogs recently did strawberry cocopops but they were very weak and pale compared to the Sianbos 80s version!

@Ilikecheeseontoast

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!
You can still get these in jack fultons if you have a shop near you. I can’t remember what they are called now, I remember them as steak Canadians. They are still cheap, I think about £1.50 a pack
LasagneQueen · 08/05/2021 19:11

@Jbh333

And last but not least orange and apricot Ribena in a carton

OMG!! I could literally smell and taste that when I read that sentence!

So many memories on here...I think I might do a whole week of retro food when DD finishes school in 3 weeks time. She'll be thrilled Grin!

VerbenaGirl · 08/05/2021 19:13

Those little frozen strawberry mousses!

Armadiloes · 08/05/2021 19:22

Secret bars and spira, loved on these school lunches.

Pickled onion meanies and tomato tom toms.

Sara Lee chocolate gateaux, pretty sure you can still buy this but got a version for my birthday this year.

Chicken and sweetcorn crispy pancakes - got ham and mozzarella ones in morrisons last week, not as good.

Either sharwoods or birdseye frozen chicken balti bowl with mini naan bread, can't remember the make.
Weight watchers fiesta chicken, loved these two and were staple dinners for me - both bought from farmfoods.

DahliaMacNamara · 08/05/2021 19:22

There was a long butterscotch type sweet in a clear wrapper in the late 70s, I think. It had a chocolate core running through the centre. I have no idea what it was called, and I always read through every last one of these threads to see if anyone else remembers it. There was a cola flavoured one too, that was like a long boiled sweet but with a very slightly chewy quality. That was amazing, and dentists probably had shares in the manufacturer.
Crisp varietals I have loved and lost:
Smiths fried onion
KP Worcester Sauce
XL barbecue beef. I wouldn't eat those now, but they were a regular Friday night treat back in my wild teenage days of going to church young people's meetings.

Dohrehmee · 08/05/2021 19:29

Greggs coconut bar cakes. They were very soft sponge cakes covered in yellow jam and covered with dessicated coconut. I Cant even find a recipe to make at home

strugglingwithlife · 08/05/2021 19:35

I've just remembered a yoghurt, can't remember the brand, it was fudge yoghurt with real fudge pieces, it was divine and really big pots too. Had forgotten about them until a pp mentioned hazelnut ones, haven't seen them for years

MintyCedric · 08/05/2021 19:47

On the subject of yoghurt...does anyone remember Prize Italiano's?

They were a kind of whipped yoghurt/mousse - probs late 80s...

Teenagehorrorbag · 08/05/2021 19:57

Cabana bars - coconut and caramel, sickly but gorgeous! Also Jap desserts (yes I love coconut) and coffee flavoured walnut whips!

Another vote for Heinz toast toppers as well. And I used to buy a lean Cuisine meal which was my all time favourite ready meal, although I forget the name. It was a beef grillsteak with a sort of tomato/ratatouille style sauce. I think it may have been boil in the bag - but it was yum!

MissMoan · 08/05/2021 20:11

Pyramint!

It was a gorgeous pyramid-shaped dark chocolate shell with a mint fondant inside. It was wonderful.

greenlabelchutney · 08/05/2021 20:21

In no particular order...
Sharwoods Green Label chutney - this was a staple at my gran’s house
M&S baked potato and butter flavour crisps
All the full sugar fizzy drinks that have been ruined but especially irn bru, lucozade and lilt
M&S Deltas
Mars bars dark and light bars - with dark chocolate and the nougat was white and totally different to a normal Mars bar.

There are definitely others on my list but I just can’t remember right now 😂

h2obaby · 08/05/2021 20:21

Can anyone remember pig crisps from fine fare ? They were bacon flavour pig shaped puffs , nobody seems to remember them ! Oh and pizza rollas

Sophabearsmum · 08/05/2021 21:00

@HangingOverTheEdge
I googled Munchmallows and guess what I found?!
munchmallow.uk/
It says they're back and you can get them in B & M AND you can get them in white chocolate too! Smile

Iwanttorunandhide · 08/05/2021 21:40

The toasted coconut Boost bars were lush. Why did they stop making them? Why??

Also the mousses that came stacked in long packets.
Small pleasures

queenofmycastlex · 08/05/2021 21:45

Cremola foam! I know they do a knock of version now but it’s not the same

PamelaEwing · 08/05/2021 21:49

Birds Dream topping and my primary school trifle. It was bright neon pink with hundreds and thousands on and soft sponge. I still dream about it 😋

SunQuik (think it was called that) concentrated orange squash (really sweet and strong). Came in a bevelled glass bottle and you diluted it with water.

Also frozen can shaped / sized cartons of orange juice. You just took it out of the freezer snd waited for it to defrost. The flavour was amazing!

In the early 90’s there were these Italian parpadelle pasta ready meals in Sainsbury’s (branded not Sainsbury’s own) in a red white and green coloured cardboard pack with peel off cardboard lid. The tomato sauce was to one side and you heated it in the microwave then mixed it all together when done. They were so nice. Wish I could remember the name?
