"No hat, no outside" not working. Been trapped inside with toddler for 4 days.

Toddler (22 months) will not wear a sun hat, only a wooly bobble hat, we've tried 5 different sun hats with his favourite things on. Just not working. Went out last week and it was hot and he'd only put a bobble hat on and he was sodden with sweat afterwards.

So I toughened up, put the bobble hat out of sat and have lined up a selection of sun hats next to his shoes by the door. Everytime for the last 4 days he's asked to go in the garden, for a walk or to the park we've had the "no hat, no play/no go outside" argument. He will not back down and just tears it off so we haven't left the house. It's so sunny and nice and I'm just stuck indoors with a cranky toddler who hasn't had a proper run around in days but neither of us will back down.

What do I do?

Take him out without a hat. One of mine hated hats and would throw it off as soon as she could. Are you in a different country to the UK? Because in my part it isn't hot enough to worry about them getting overheated anyway.

Where do you live, the Maldives?? Seriously, it's April, the sun is not some mythical beast of Satan, just go!

Cannot believe you have not been out for 4 days...not sure this is a hill I would die on.
If you’re particularly worried about sun exposure just avoid being out during the middle of the day.

My kids never wore sunhats.

Get a soft jersey fabric hat. Won’t be as warm as a Woolly hat but might be more comfortable than a sun hat

Really?! Clearly I'm a terrible parent but I would just shrug my shoulders and not even worry about it. Get outside and just keep trying. If he takes it off its not the end of the world.

Are you somewhere particularly hot? If in UK, I think this may be something you should let slide. It's April. The sun is very unlikely to do him any serious damage. He is 22 months and impulsive. He won't really understand or remember cause / consequences. Unless you can glue the hat to his head, you will not win this one.

I think you need to give some context here op. It's not hot enough to need to wear a sun hat in most of northern Europe atm. Where do you live? Oz or USA or elsewhere?

Let him wear the woolly hat and get sweaty.
Take the sun hat with you in case he wants to take off the woolly hat, tell him he has to wear one of the hats or go home.
Even if you go home at least you'll have gone out in the first place!

He's so fair, I don't want him to get his scalp burned and soon enough it'll be hotter and we need to crack it. It's been sunny enough to burn easily these last 2 days especially.

They 22 months, you are on a losing battle.
They haven't a clue why they need a hat.

Just cover in suncream and head off

Have you let him choose a hat ? He might wear it then.
Take him out. Being stuck inside is no fun. Just try and seek shade.

Are you in Australia, or somewhere else where the sun is very fierce? Because not going outside in the UK in April because a toddler won't wear a sunhat seems an extreme reaction. None of mine tolerated hats, and I just kept them out of the midday sun and used suncream.

Just take him out without a hat? I really would t worry in the U.K.

Nursery used to rub suncream into their hair every day, they would need hosing down when we got home don't pick this battle. Or let him wear a woolly hat if it's literally the top of his head you are worried about.

You could try wearing his sunhat and telling him he can’t have it.

Don't be worrying about this in the UK in April. By the time the weather gets hot he may have changed his mind and insist on wearing a sunhat 24 hours a day, especially in bed.
