What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

LONG!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/04/2021 23:43

@TuvoknotSpock

Why on earth and your first born son Charles if you don't want him to be called that as a king? Also I just realised her last son is Edward after her uncle who abdicated and was pretty unpleasant... Philip Jr would make more sense.

On a personal note I would have preferred George to have been a girl as I'll only have kings now for the rest of my life and would prefer a queen Grin

Maybe George will decide he wants to be queen instead of king. You never know.
Lockdownbear · 18/04/2021 01:12

Though realistically it’s going to be him, Edward and Sophie, Anne, william and Kate. And as Edward, Anne, Sophie and indeed Charles get older maybe they’ll realise there’s not enough of them?

Yip as 4 of the current top 8 are over 70, and Williams kids are very young, in 10 years the RF could become very unhealthy slim.
I think if Harry doesn't re-enter the fold William could well turn to his cousins for a big of support, giving his kids the chance to live for a bit out the spotlight.
I think it's most likely Zara or Peter he'd turn too.

YellowPurple · 18/04/2021 01:17

Money will change, Stamps will change
Army and police uninforms will change

The national anthem will change

Charles will become King
Edward will become Duke of Edinburgh

Lots and lots will change

YellowPurple · 18/04/2021 01:29

And William will become Prince of Wales obviously

snugglepuff · 18/04/2021 01:37

I'll be sat at home, or in work going about my daily life with zero fucks to give

YellowPurple · 18/04/2021 01:41

People will be sent home from work or businesses won't open, depending on the time it is announced

Kokeshi123 · 18/04/2021 01:52

I'd be very surprised if Charles were to choose a different regnal name. The "tradition" of choosing a new regnal name has been used by precisely three British monarchs--it is not some kind of widespread practice. And Charles will have been known as Charles for decades and decades by the time he ascends.

SuziQuatrosFatNan · 18/04/2021 01:54

It'll be weird with Charles being king. He's already past retirement age and not had the job he's supposed to have been born for yet. Can't be many times that happens. I guess it's similar to Bernie Sanders.

Exactly. The vast majority have used the name they were known as heirs. I think it's actually fewer than three. Edward VIII was known as David in the family, but formally was Prince Edward. Edward VII was known as Bertie in the family, but formally was Prince Albert Edward. He just dropped the Albert. Victoria was Alexandrina Victoria but she was known formally as Princess Victoria of York and called Victoria by some in her family. So that leaves George VI who was Prince Albert, but chose to use George to emphasize continuity after the abdication.
SenecaFallsRedux · 18/04/2021 02:16

Princess Victoria of Kent, not York.

LEMtheoriginal · 18/04/2021 05:00

People will get sent home from work - oookaayyy.

PIPSUE · 18/04/2021 07:18

I agree with TuvoknotSpock - another Queen would be perfect. Ann could have stepped into her mother's shoes so easily. Like her mother, she has quietly and diligently worked steadily all her life. No really bad publicity, except when she showed some of her father's less acceptable characteristics.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 18/04/2021 08:11

I can't imagine Princess Anne wanting to be Queen.

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 08:26

I think the media coverage of Anne would be totally different if she was heir to the throne.

The incident with her being prosecuted over the dog bite. The letters between her and Tim Laurence before she was divorced. The constant rumours about her and Andrew Parker-Bowles.

Not to mention her marriage to Tim - marrying in Scotland to get round the CofE issue would never have been able to happen.

Things would have been reported much differently, and forgotten much less quickly.

Peregrina · 18/04/2021 09:47

Not to mention her marriage to Tim - marrying in Scotland to get round the CofE issue would never have been able to happen.

But then Charles and Camilla got married in a Registry Office to get round the problem of divorcees marrying again in the C of E.

I don’t think that would have happened back in 92 if she was the heir
Peregrina · 18/04/2021 11:07

I do recall that there was a bit of a kerfuffle with Charles and Camilla's marriage as to where it would take place.

Auntycorruption · 18/04/2021 14:01

@CorianderBee

I will be sad that the image of a woman as a power head will be gone for my kids.

Male PM, King, male president... no more Queen to temper the idea of women being in power.

That's all I'll be sad about though. My children seeing a King rather than a Queen doing a decent job of it.

I agree and a long time before we get another
Lockdownbear · 19/04/2021 07:31

Yes it will be a long time before the next Queen as the next 3 generations are all male, Charles, William and George. At least if George has a girl first she won't be bumped by her younger brother.

Sandra15 · 19/04/2021 07:40

What would happen if the next in line to the throne were gay? Would they accept that person in a gay marriage and a surrogate child or would it pass to the next in line? Would they expect that person to deny who they are and produce kids for the sake of the Crown? Would they be allowed to be openly gay?

Arbadacarba · 19/04/2021 07:48

At least if George has a girl first she won't be bumped by her younger brother.

George might decide not to have children, and then we'd get Charlotte as queen (I say 'we' but I'll be long dead by then).

MissTrip82 · 19/04/2021 07:48

@Alsohuman

I’ll tell you what is ironic. When I joined MN I wasn’t a supporter of the monarchy but all the republicans here have made me into one.
That’s not ironic so much as just rather stupid, isn’t it?

Surely you just make your own mind up having done some reading and weighed the arguments. You don’t decide whether something is a social good based on the character of some of its supporters or detractors.

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 07:59

Thank you @MissTrip82. Always good when some random calls you stupid, don’t you find?

I’m not interested in the monarchy as a “social good” - it obviously isn’t anything of the sort. I never really cared about it one way or the other but all the spite, bitterness, envy and vitriol of some republicans have made me more supportive of it. Sorry if that doesn’t suit you.

PrelovedWithValue · 19/04/2021 09:06

How bizarre.

Are there other things in your life that you have decided to like because other people don't?
