What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

Will we accept Camilla as Queen?

Springisspringing2 · 17/04/2021 17:35

They are deeply wedded into our national identity.

They are the stable back bone as others come and go.

I must say as I said in pp... It's comforting for me, although not so great for them, to see them also having too wrestle the same issues many of us have too at funerals... Family fall outs etc.

Springisspringing2 · 17/04/2021 17:36

I can see why not accept her.

I must say I do like Charles.. I find him warmer and more personable than Edward, Anne or Andrew.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/04/2021 17:59

The royal family are needed to help with international relations until we actually get some politicians that are respected the same all over the world. That is the main thing that annoyed me a about the Oprah interview. We are dealing with a pandemic and Brexit. It was unfair to damage one of our big selling points in the middle of all that. I think a lot of people not that interested in the royal family felt the same. Hence why so much kick back.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 17/04/2021 18:04

The Camilla one is interesting (She would just be a dutchess still wouldn't she?)

At first after the Diana death and when they first got married I would have said the public would be hell no. However time has moved on. Will and Haz seem perfectly fine with her. Charles is way happier than he ever was before. So I think people realise that it was a shit thing to do to Diana but this really was true love. So she seems to be very well liked these days.

Pedallleur · 17/04/2021 18:05

Tradition? Maybe. Part of us? I don't think they are relevant. Their lives are completely alien to us. If we were born into nobility, did the whole inherited a Dukedom etc and joined the Services maybe we would understand it but the RF arent relevant to most of us. If U2 or the Foo Fighters were playing at one end of The Mall and the RF were at the other end Trooping the Colour or whatever, who would pull the bigger crowd?

When Charles is King then Camilla will be Queen. It's just a case of what she'll be known as. Same as she's currently Princess of Wales, but is styled as Duchess of Cornwall

She'll not stay as Duchess of Cornwall because when Charles becomes King then William becomes Duke of Cornwall, which will make Kate Duchess of Cornwall & Cambridge.

Camilla will either be Queen Camilla, or use the new Princess Consort title they mentioned for her before.

Thank you for explaining that❤

I like her, always have. If she and Charles had been allowed to marry when they were young and very much in love, a whole lot of heartbreak would have been prevented.

IbrahimaRedTwo · 17/04/2021 18:53

You don't get a say. It doesn't matter whether you do or don#t.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 17/04/2021 18:57

Won't William become Prince of Wales?

Not automatically. Prince of Wales has to be bestowed on him whereas Cornwall is automatic so the second Charles is King William becomes duke of Cornwall.

@PrelovedWithValue

Do you actually realise we'd still need to fund people to do the work they do

What do they do that we would need to pay people to do? Swan around the world in private jets? I would do that for free...

Other countries pay an elected HoS a top civil servant level salary, plus staff expenses, use of a house, car, plane. That’s ONE person. Not a family.

And as people point out repeatedly, Versailles isn’t full of tumbleweed.

Arbadacarba · 17/04/2021 19:02

Won't William become Prince of Wales?

They're not mutually exclusive - Charles has both titles, hence Camilla uses the Duchess title - normally they both would style themselves using the superior title of Prince of Wales. It's only the unusual circumstance of needing to respect Diana's memory that has caused Camilla to style herself DoC not PoW.

It's always been said that Camilla will style herself 'Princess Consort' when Charles ascends the throne. But it's possible they'll decide against that - Diana was never queen, after all.

PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 19:05

@TheFourOhFour I'm not sure that I'm the person you want to quote. I'm not arguing to retain the monarchy!

No, I was agreeing with you, and replying to the person you were quoting. Once start regarding a ceremonial HoS as an elected single-person, fixed-term job, not a ridiculously bloated situation involving a bloodline, it’s all very simple. And cheap, even factoring in the cost of elections, which can usually be piggybacked onto another vote.

felulageller · 17/04/2021 20:05

Louise and James could be working royals in 5 years.

I think Bea and Genie will be more popular once Andy boy is dead.

CovidCorvid · 17/04/2021 20:13

Louise and James are unlikely to ever be working royals. They will be niece and nephew of a king. I don’t think any of the Queen nieces or nephews are working royals. Sarah chatto and Linley work for a living.

Even Beatrice and Eugenie aren’t allowed to be working royals and the media reckon they’re desperate to be allowed.

Charles wants an even more slimmed down monarchy.

Though realistically it’s going to be him, Edward and Sophie, Anne, william and Kate. And as Edward, Anne, Sophie and indeed Charles get older maybe they’ll realise there’s not enough of them?

PicsInRed · 17/04/2021 21:11

Actually I do think it's possible the palace are feeling out public sentiment on Louise, I saw a story today about her "poise" (she seems nice enough tbf), there's been a few "candid" (palace initiated) snaps of her around Windsor lately.

James will be Duke of Edinbirgh after his father Edward, so I'd say it's more likely than not (60/40?) that he'll be a working royal, though maybe part time in a supporting capacity.

duvetdreaming · 17/04/2021 21:27

I think the biggest impact of Harry stepping away, and imo why there is likely to be an issue with William if there is one, will be on William’s children - especially George.

I don't think that will change anything for George as he's 3rd in the line of succession compared to Harry's 6th.

TuvoknotSpock · 17/04/2021 22:44

Why on earth and your first born son Charles if you don't want him to be called that as a king? Also I just realised her last son is Edward after her uncle who abdicated and was pretty unpleasant... Philip Jr would make more sense.

On a personal note I would have preferred George to have been a girl as I'll only have kings now for the rest of my life and would prefer a queen Grin

PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 22:49

Because you like the name? Charles named his second born Henry, and he's always been called Harry... So I suspect he's not too bothered by this.

You've still got a queen.

Because your monarchy has a log tradition of regal names being different to day to day first names?
