What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

No uniforms will be worn by anyone. Except perhaps the Dean of Windsor.

littlecottonbud · 17/04/2021 12:25

Time to rethink the monarchy - Turn Buck Palace to a hotel.

JustLyra · 17/04/2021 12:26

@CovidCorvid

I wonder what will happen with the wearing a suit/uniform debacle at her funeral? Charles, William, etc will surely have to wear uniform at a state funeral.

Will Andrew insist on dressing up as an admiral, will Harry be the only one in a suit? Will Meghan come?

There will be uniforms at her funeral (unless it’s very very soon) as it’ll be a full on state funeral.

Andrew’s situation will likely have been clear by then because Charles’ opinion will be known now and for the Queen’s he’ll be in charge. Andrew is not currently admiral and there is no chance he’ll be promoted, that delay will be permanent imo. I think in the next couple of months he may very well retire all his positions. Probably with a vomit inducing spiel about supporting his mother

Harry won’t be the only one in a suit. Peter Philips will be. Also, it’s the Queen Earl Snowden will walk in the procession and some from the Queen mother’s family probably will too and they’ll be in suits.

After seeing the coverage of Prinve Phillip's death/funeral I hope I am away.

There will be at the Queen’s surely? It’ll be a massive state funeral.

The hardest part will be getting used to calling Prince Charles King George VII if he choses that as his regnal name instead of King Charles III!

Havanananana · 17/04/2021 12:42

In a democracy you get what the majority want though

Oh the irony of citing "democracy" in a country that has an unelected Head of State, an unelected Upper House, a parliamentary system deliberately designed to ensure that only the chosen few have any chance of being elected and has given the UK a government with a majority of 80 seats based on the votes of just 29% of the electorate.

PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 12:59

Nobody’s saying it’s the better option

You seem to think so, the way you are talking.

I don't remember a vote on the royal family. It looks like in this country you get what is tradition...

earnshaw47 · 17/04/2021 13:04

hopefully nothing will change although of course the Queen is elderly and after all she had been through, the pandemic, harry and megan and now her husband going, would not be surprised if it will all have a profound effect on her, my worry is that i really do not want Camilla as consort if Charles was to take over at some point

Alsohuman · 17/04/2021 13:17

I’ll tell you what is ironic. When I joined MN I wasn’t a supporter of the monarchy but all the republicans here have made me into one.

Peregrina · 17/04/2021 13:17

But you will get Camilla as long as Charles lives to inherit regardless of any democracy.

Interesting. When I joined mumsnet I couldn't give two hoots about the monarchy, and nothing that has been posted here has changed my views on that. I am still to see anyone come up with a good reason that that particular family deserve to have that position. Birth is not a good reason.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 17/04/2021 13:48

@GoWalkabout

Hopefully we will peacefully transition to not bothering to fund a royal family because support for that has dwindled considerably.
Do you actually realise we'd still need to fund people to do the work they do and it would cost more not less and FAR less tourism money coming in.

Really ?? They are a force for good around the world, drawing countries together and providing stability in our nation. The one constant in our lives. Given the shenanigans of all political parties here and around the world, why would you want to get rid? They are a marketing tool for our country. Doesn't it pay to be different, to stand out, to keep our history alive? And I say this as only half English. Take it from me you could have worse!
PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 14:06

What do they do that we would need to pay people to do? Swan around the world in private jets? I would do that for free...

But who’d turn out to see you?
PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 14:25

Hopefully nobody!

RickiTarr · 17/04/2021 14:30

I’m sure we don’t need 30+ people to “do the work” and I’m equally sure we could find candidates who wouldn’t shag around constantly, start public feuds with each other, demand a couple of counties worth of land to live off, and insist on owning/controlling three dozen tiaras, a tonne of assorted other jewels, umpteen castles and half the country’s art collection.

Ideally, if have an Irish style presidency. I’ve hit middle age now, though, and mellowed, so I’d settle for drastic reform and downscaling. Ideally that would involve financial transparency, a clear rule book and the return of a lot of assets to public ownership.

RickiTarr · 17/04/2021 14:34

Oh and it’s completely hackneyed to say so by now but apparently still necessary so I will point out that it is true that Versailles is the most lucrative tourist attraction is Europe and - famously- has no royal occupants these days. In fact, tourists get a better look at palaces like Versailles or Hampton Court than they do at Buckingham Palace, and most tourists to the UK never glimpse a royal.

TheVampiresWife · 17/04/2021 14:40

@RickiTarr excellent posts.

Always makes me laugh when people talk about how gracious and dignified the RF is when they're a bunch of adulterous, scrapping, feuding, pampered celebs with a family history mired in blood and conflict. Same people usually denigrate the likes of the Kardashians, too, because apparently you need to own a few castles and have serial murderers in your lineage to be worthy of a forelock tug.

Springisspringing2 · 17/04/2021 15:53

This funeral and the logistics have shown they are not shielded at all from normal problems that face us all

Fergie!! Absent...

Andrew.. Utterly in disgrace with no sense of reflection..

Feuding brothers... Who may kick off at any moment!

earnshaw47 · 17/04/2021 16:26

after watching Prince Philips funeral I feel even more proud of my country and my royal family, they are part of us and part of our tradition,

PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 16:37

It astonishes me that people think the royal family are something to be proud of. What have they actually achieved, as individuals or as a family unit, that is worth being proud of? Given the immense level of privilege they have, it would need to be something really good.

Other than being born into or marrying into that family?

earnshaw47 · 17/04/2021 16:55

i suppose you are a royalist or not, we all have our opinions and am all for free speech, it is hard to understand and explain really about our royal family, its deep rooted i think ,i do feel strongly about this being very much pro royal family but , like i said, i realise we dont all think the same

IbrahimaRedTwo · 17/04/2021 17:28

it is hard to understand and explain really about our royal family, its deep rooted i think ,i do feel strongly about this being very much pro royal family

So you're mad for the RF, you love them, but you can't think of a single reason why? Yes, that is hard to understand, you are correct!
