“Eight days of national mourning”

Have been announced by the government, leading up to DofE’s funeral next Saturday.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Do we all have to wear black? Are jokes banned and comedians interned? Are radio stations not allowed to play ‘shiny happy people’?

OP posts:

I expect it just means flags flying at half mast and even more obituary programmes.

WitchisDead · 10/04/2021 17:22

It's business as usual in my life so they can sod off.

user1495884673 · 10/04/2021 17:26

Fucking hell, we're trying to claw our way out of a pandemic and the government is stopping working for eight days. The mind boggles.

WitchisDead · 10/04/2021 17:31

From the article
"MPs are expected to wear black armbands while they are at work".

Has anyone worn that given the thousands deaths being reported by politicians over the last year or do they have the wrong social standing to merit official recognition? Hmm

The Government is Her Majesty's Government and as such they work for her! It is her that signs off on all laws and she wants to mourn the loss of her husband. After all we've all been forced to stop doing another 8 days is nothing. It is our constitution...
SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 17:34

The Queen an her family not working I get but the Govt just sit about for a week pretending to be sad in the middle of lifting lockdown? Will lockdown even go ahead of they're not allowed to do any publicit

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/04/2021 17:35

They work for the British people too and 127 thousand dead from a pandemic didn't occasion black armbands?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 17:38

So enforced mourning is more important than passing laws or presenting public information in the middle of a world wide pandemic?

Talk about priorities. I for one will not be entering a state of public mourning in the least. I’ve got 2 meet ups with friends l haven’t seen for months, and lots of other fun stuff.

No, absolutely no mourning for me.

ChelseaCat · 10/04/2021 17:38

Wow, the death of Prince Philip has really brought out the nice side of people on here.

WarwickHunt · 10/04/2021 17:38

Totally disproportionate, and only likely to backfire.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 17:38

We don’t have a written constitution.

I am horrified to read this. No way should the government step down for 8 days. I don’t care it’s the royal family.

Exactly what i was just thinking!

He wasn't particularly nice so it seems people are showing what they think of him. Not unexpected.

I agree. The performative and competitive mourning to angle for honours and knighthoods is repulsive. Or was that not what you were referring to?
ATieLikeRichardGere · 10/04/2021 17:44

People are being weirdly nasty about this. Poor Queen.

Ted27 · 10/04/2021 17:45

There will be no new laws requiring Royal Assent for 8 days - that does not mean government stops

grapewine · 10/04/2021 17:47

I was thinking this. It seems disproportionate right now.
ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2021 17:49

The Government are still working during this period, just no new laws getting Royal Assent

orangejuicer · 10/04/2021 17:49

Where does it say government is going to stop working? I've seen the government advice on the mourning period and it will have little impact on my job (civil service), so curious where this has come from.

tinytemper66 · 10/04/2021 17:50

Well I won't be mourning. Back to school on Monday and lots to do. Things are opening up and I will be taking advantage of it all.
Sorry am old man has died and for the family left behind. But life carries on.

Thesearmsofmine · 10/04/2021 17:51

Of course no new laws will be passed but press conferences regarding the pandemic should be going ahead particularly with lockdown restrictions easing on Monday.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 17:52

No one has questioned any of the things happening in the Royal household or their 5/6 weeks of mourning, just the Govt downing tools for a week mid lockdown release
WitchisDead · 10/04/2021 17:53

I don't care for any of them. We'll see how much they really think of the public in the coming weeks, however, I can't see any of them caring much for the thousands of other people who didn't even get a goodbye to their loved ones never mind enforced mourning. That's who I'm infinitely more sad for.
