“Eight days of national mourning”

Have been announced by the government, leading up to DofE’s funeral next Saturday.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Do we all have to wear black? Are jokes banned and comedians interned? Are radio stations not allowed to play ‘shiny happy people’?

They are she just won't be signing off on any new laws she doesn't actually need to sign off on all of them and seriously? Can she not mourn her husband

I said that the government should continue business as usual. I thought it was clear from the fact that I said that the Queen was in mourning that I was referring to our elected government rather than the Queen as head of state but perhaps not.

Isolatedizzy · 10/04/2021 20:16

So the people saying they aren't really into the Royal Family and didn't like him much, you do realise that the Queen is Head of State? Prince Philip has been the longest Serving Consort to the Monarch since 1707!

Wether you are 'in' to them or not is totally irrelevant! They aren't the bloody Kardashians!

I'm a Civil Servant, if it makes you feel any better I'll be working Monday through to Friday next week as normal! Grin

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:21

@OneFamilyToRuleUsAll but that isn't actually what people are saying who have met him though
Just judgemental people and people sat behind keyboards
Also people don't seem to be taught to maybe say nothing if you have nothing nice to say, especially on a page that has been maybe set up for people to show respect
A life is a life surely

TonTonMacoute · 10/04/2021 20:21

Parliament will pass no new laws for eight days.

What new laws are people desperate have passed this week FFS? Parliament regularly closes down in the summer with no discernible problems. I don't think the country will grind to a halt Confused

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:23

Also can people maybe read facts before moaning , the goverment Is still working !!!

andoutofhere · 10/04/2021 20:23

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

So enforced mourning is more important than passing laws or presenting public information in the middle of a world wide pandemic?

Talk about priorities. I for one will not be entering a state of public mourning in the least. I’ve got 2 meet ups with friends l haven’t seen for months, and lots of other fun stuff.

No, absolutely no mourning for me.

Goodness me - no-one is asking you to.
worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:27

@Mairyhinge respect isn't just given for the person who has died its for those that are left behind
ITs often why we go to funerals , yes to say goodbye but also to support maybe family that are mourning etc
If you don't want to comment etc then thats fine but why do people fee the need to put a negative comment
Scroll by , turn the tv over etc
But people need to remember some of the vile comments will be read by family
I can't understand why people these days show such lack of respect, but most are hid behind a keyboard and prob wouldn't sit and say the things they write in the office etc
Its a sad world we live in when people cannot just show respect or ignore

user1495884673 · 10/04/2021 20:28

There is a global pandemic. We are currently in the midst of a programme to open up the economy. The vaccines that are supposed to be our ticket out are under investigation over the extent of side-effects. One of our member nations is being wracked by violence and rioting.

Let the Queen mourn, let the rest of her family mourn, fly flags at half mast, but the elected government should be governing.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:33

Do people think national mourning will be we all have to wear black and all shops / pubs etc not allowed to open
It will barely affect most people's lives in real terms
My kids will do a 2 min silence at rugby and prob at football but that is the most it will impact us as a family in real terms
Why are people so outraged because the goverment will wear black armbands etc
We have a monarchy and protocol get over it, it really won't impact you

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:34

@user1495884673 and they pretty much are

ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2021 20:37

@worriedatthemoment there are some people not thinking, that is the problem!

applecatchers36 · 10/04/2021 20:37

It's a misjudgement of how life has been for most in the UK. PP had a rich, privileged and full life and was extremely fortunate compared to most. Some estimates of deaths in UK by this pandemic are 150k. That's a huge amount of bereaved and not of a family member lucky enough to live to 99 years. Plus the UK has had 10 years of austerity. I do understand that this does not seem proportionate and just emphasizes class divisions and inequality.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:43

@ineedaholidaynow i just despair of what we are like today
The world seems more decisive and angry than I have known in my lifetime I would say and respect for others seems non existent in so many ways in life.
I really worry about the world my kids have to navigate , I really feel like we have gone one step forwards , then two back
I guess the way to see less is to come offline especially anonymous places as people can hide behind the anonymity.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 20:46

@applecatchers36 but how
What is it taking away from the average person and affecting them in anyway?
We have a monarchy , we have protocol for things like this as do many many countries and its really not affecting anyone day to day life
When someone famous dies it creates more attention than your average person thats just how it is

PurpleMustang · 10/04/2021 20:52

It was said on the TV that it will affect the local elections campaigns etc. But didn't say how long for

canigooutyet · 10/04/2021 20:53

Wow, never realised Princess Diana had no national mourning.

applecatchers36 · 10/04/2021 20:54

It's really complex isn't it? Not simple but someone who has been racist on record as a figurehead, perhaps accept that not everyone will mourn him. Put this against higher proportion of BME rates and deaths of Covid it's not great is it? We have a refusal to have a public enquiry into Covid in this country. This is just one example but yes it jars for many, many people.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/04/2021 20:57

@user1495884673

Fucking hell, we're trying to claw our way out of a pandemic and the government is stopping working for eight days. The mind boggles.
Yes this

TV news has been wall to wall Covid for over a year and all of a sudden it’s barely even mentioned.

Beyond the RF not carrying out duties and flags flying at half mast it should be business as usual

RedcurrantPuff · 10/04/2021 20:57
Wow, never realised Princess Diana had no national mourning.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/national-day-of-mourning-when-b1829165.html
Yes she wasn’t an HRH at the time of her death.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:01

@applecatchers36 not really that complex is it , we live in a country that has a monarchy
Yes he has said things in the past that were not correct , but lots of people have
People that have met him and know him seem to speak very highly , like former staff, The Obama's etc etc
We will have a public inquiry into covid nut not now , you can't really have whilst it is still happening and its a separate issue
We had a minute silence for covid victims and maybe in time more will be done
Any death is awful and obviously even more so to the family and especially a young person, he was a lucky man making it to 99 we also all know that.
My great nan made it to 101 it was still sad when she died though
But again we live under a monarchy we have protocols for these sort of things and generally it won't affect most peoples lifes

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:03

@RedcurrantPuff but they are working and most things are normal
There is a page on gov uk explaining what is happening etc

ElderMillennial · 10/04/2021 21:04

I don't think people mean to be "nasty" but if you have lost someone close to you, particularly at a young age, it seems a bit odd for everything to come to a stop when a 99 year old man dies especially after what has been a difficult year.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:05

For all those who wish to know what this means on the gov site there is a page all about what it is, means and what is expected

freckles20 · 10/04/2021 21:05

FFS the government IS WORKING. They are assisting in giving the Queen 'time off' by not passing any laws that require her approval for eight days.

There is some worrying misinterpretation and hysteria on this thread.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:05

@ElderMillennial but what is coming to a stop ??
