“Eight days of national mourning”

Susie477 · 10/04/2021 17:14

Have been announced by the government, leading up to DofE’s funeral next Saturday.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Do we all have to wear black? Are jokes banned and comedians interned? Are radio stations not allowed to play ‘shiny happy people’?

OP posts:

@freckles20 there really is
Despite numerous people saying they are working and reasonably not expecting the queen to pass laws for 8 days ( likely were not going to be any anyway ) people are still repeating the same thing

@user1495884673

*But your reading skills aren't.

I said living in a country with a monarchy and if one of them died.

I actually didn't say the Monarch - PP is a member and has died.*

No, I don't understand. A monarchy is a country with a monarch as head of state, mono meaning one.

Definition of monarchy for you.

Again - googling yourself would have helped before continuing to try and argue I was wrong Wink

*Monarchy (n)
*
The monarch and royal family of a county
Noun: the monarchy

He was a member of the Monarchy as the queens husband and a member of the royal family.

The queen herself is the Monarch.

I'm not sure I can actually make it any clearer but feel free to continue to argue.

'everything is coming to a stop'
Do you mean the (obviously optional) minutes silence next Saturday?

ElderMillennial · 10/04/2021 21:13

@worriedatthemoment I'm not saying anything is coming to a stop, that's jot the point. I'm responding to those saying comments saying PPs who say it is ridiculous for the government to stop working and for normal TV to be interrupted for 8 days of mourning are "nasty" - I'm saying I don't think it's about being nasty.

Isolatedizzy · 10/04/2021 21:14
@applecatchers36 not really that complex is it , we live in a country that has a monarchy
Yes he has said things in the past that were not correct , but lots of people have
People that have met him and know him seem to speak very highly , like former staff, The Obama's etc etc
We will have a public inquiry into covid nut not now , you can't really have whilst it is still happening and its a separate issue
We had a minute silence for covid victims and maybe in time more will be done
Any death is awful and obviously even more so to the family and especially a young person, he was a lucky man making it to 99 we also all know that.
My great nan made it to 101 it was still sad when she died though
But again we live under a monarchy we have protocols for these sort of things and generally it won't affect most peoples lifes
I think because the Queen has been on the throne for so long people have almost forgotten she's there!
State funerals, Coronations and the protocols around them! None of it has happened in lots of people's lifetimes, including mine!

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 10/04/2021 21:18

I realised today that I actually feel a bit despondent as a result of PPs death. Not because I am a royalist or had any particular connection with him but because it has highlighted, as again this thread has, how many thoroughly unpleasant people with no regard for the traditions and standards of this country there are about
I've been on MN since it were all fields but the more I read on here these days, the more I despair for the future

JohnLeeCooker · 10/04/2021 21:23

If it was just a minute silence that would be fine. But no, the North Korea-style enforced public mourning for days on end has to continue.

I am praying the queen lives for ever because I don't think I could take what will be unleashed on the nation when she goes.

It will be like the 1800s with urchins pawing at the palace gates, tears running down their coal stained faces with Nick fucking witchell giving us the hallowed voice over

Ted27 · 10/04/2021 21:23

@user1495884673

I think you and some others need a basic lesson in how government works.
Parliament does not pass umpteen laws everyday so civil servants know what to do
Me and every other civil servant and local govt worker will be working as usual, getting the country open again, the vacination programme and all the rest of it is not stopping. I work in the Covid emergency response in my dept, we are not waiting on any legislation
There will be no political campaigning, the Queen will not be getting red boxes.
Other than that business as usual, unless you are involved in the funeral arrangements.

@QueenOfTheDoubleWide

So someone with republican ideals is a de facto unpleasant person according to you. Thanks for that. Maybe we'll learn to mind our P's and Q's and show side respect to an institution that embraced Jimmy saville and whose direct representatives in jersey deliberately tried to cover up decades of child abuse
worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:27

@QueenOfTheDoubleWide im with you on that , luckily I don't really know people like some on here in real life ( not that i know of anyway) I know lots of people from lots of different backgrounds and we may have varying views but we respect each other and accept that we all see things differently at times

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 10/04/2021 21:28

What @JohnLeeCooker said - which had me in stitches!

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:29

@JohnLeeCooker really not what this id about though is it
You can support a republic but when someone dies you either show respect or just scroll by
Support your republic anytime but no need on threads about a loss of a person really is there

MalteserGeezee · 10/04/2021 21:31

The 8 days of national mourning are essentially bereavement leave for the Queen, plus some etiquette rules for public offices/government buildings in respect of flags at half mast etc. To all intents and purposes, normal life continues.

worriedatthemoment · 10/04/2021 21:32

@ElderMillennial I would agree some are not at all your right but some are
I have read some awful things online
But if we stick to the thread alone many people are complaining about something without actually reading the facts

user1495884673 · 10/04/2021 21:33

Ted27, I did clarify that I was referring to the elected government. Civil servants and local government employees are not "the government"

Civil Service
About us

Who we are

We’re politically impartial and independent of government and work in central government departments, agencies, and non-departmental government bodies (NDPBs).

DelBocaVista · 10/04/2021 21:34

I think because the Queen has been on the throne for so long people have almost forgotten she's there!
State funerals, Coronations and the protocols around them! None of it has happened in lots of people's lifetimes, including mine!

This is a really good point!

Isolatedizzy · 10/04/2021 21:35

I agree!

JohnLeeCooker I don't think Queen is saying that at all!
And I would have more respect if people were posting from. Republican point of view! Lots of posts on this thread seem to be from 'the not having a clue how the Country works' point of view!

Abouttimemum · 10/04/2021 21:37

I’m civil service in central government and I’ll still be doing my job, I’ll just not being doing it publicly. Like everyone else in government.
It’s just about the media management / publicity.
But yes I’ll still be at work like normal!

PatchworkElmer · 10/04/2021 21:38

I can’t believe the amount of venom on here about his death 😔

Abouttimemum · 10/04/2021 21:39

@QueenOfTheDoubleWide I entirely agree.

Isolatedizzy · 10/04/2021 21:43

Meh that was supposed to quote QueenoftheDoublewide's Post!

We really do need a republic and a proper constitution. We had the situation last year of BJ being in intensive care and there being no official second in command and thankfully him not being so sick that he couldn't tell Dom he was in charge. Now things are up in the air because the Queen is in mourning. And actually, who takes 8 days off when their spouse dies? Everyone I know of working age who has lost a spouse has been signed off for some time. Are we really expecting a woman in her 90s to get back to rubber-stamping duty a week after her husband dies? We need a head of state and a deputy who can take over if they are incapacitated.

Ted27 · 10/04/2021 21:46

@user1495884673

I’m very well aware what my role is, which is to implement the policies of the elected govt,
The point is that the business of govt will not stop just because there will be no new legilsation for the next 8 days, we will just be getting on with it.

Jellycatspyjamas · 10/04/2021 21:46

If it was just a minute silence that would be fine. But no, the North Korea-style enforced public mourning for days on end has to continue.

Black armbands worn by MPs, flags at half mast and an over abundance of Coldplay is hardly equivalent to North Korea. You could literally go the whole week and not notice, given I’m still in bloody lockdown I’ll not be anywhere to see a half masted flag and the tv has an off switch.

The levels of hyperbole are ridiculous.
