Not me but while we were in Devon my mum bumped into someone she knew from the north west.

My father once told me he got talking to a couple of guys on a hiking holiday on Bornholm (an island in the Baltic) in 1947; they asked him where he lived, which was a small town in Herefordshire on the Welsh border. He assured them they'd never have heard of it, but he told them anyway. "Oh, we know that part of Herefordshire very well," they replied: "What's your address?". "No. 6 Church Street," he told them. "That's amazing!" they replied. "We were both stationed at no. 8 during the war."

Met a child from school on the Isle of Wight, same holiday met an ex colleague of DH's. Decided against IoW the following year, only to meet a child from school at the top of Snowden!

cliffdiver · 08/04/2021 09:45

Foster brother of my then boyfriend at a theme park in the Isle of Wight.

Couple I used to serve at a pub queuing to get through passport control (turns out we'd been on the same inbound flight from Lanzarote).

Not someone we knew, but a family who were staying at the same hotel in Malta as us were also at the same UK resort as us later that year.

Timmytoo · 08/04/2021 09:48

Yes, when i lived in the UK, I worked for a company and had such an ass of an area manager. He drove us all mad.
I flew home for my holiday leave (a tiny town 4000 miles away) and was on the beach and guess who came to say Hello!! 😮🙄😳

Itsokthanks · 08/04/2021 09:48

Yes lots of times but we holiday in the Uk.

I bumped into an old school friend climbing down Mount Sinai a few years ago - the world is very very small!

RedcurrantPuff · 08/04/2021 09:50

We went to DLP with my sister and her family a few years ago and she bumped into a few people she knew. When I came back someone I know said she’d seen me in the queue for a ride but I hadn’t seen her.

Once in deepest rural island in a tiny pub, people who lived a few doors down. Once in the middle of Barcelona, my friend from uni Grin

Hoppinggreen · 08/04/2021 09:51

On a long haul holiday there was a delay at the airport and we ended up chatting to a nice couple. Turned out she was my friends boss

someonelockthefridgealready · 08/04/2021 09:54

Yes, a guy from my uni course in a Parisian train station as we were both changing trains. I was especially glad as I was getting hassle from some guy who'd followed me from the metro.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/04/2021 10:04

Yeah I work in a school and years ago we were up the top of Cairngorm. Turned around to a little voice saying “Hello Mrs Fuckery” DH thought it was hysterical.

I’ve remembered another. We were in one of the Disney parks in Florida and saw our son’s scout leader and family.

Appletreehat · 08/04/2021 10:37

Yes! Quite a few times...
My 1st girls holiday when I was 18 in Tenerife. We were in a club & literally bumped into some girls who were in the year above me when I was at secondary school, I knew them to day hello but that was about it, however , we ended up spending most of the night drinking & dancing away with them, we met up another couple of night too. It was great fun!

A few years back, my dh and I were boarding a plane to NY when I saw a woman I used to work with also in the queue. We waved at one another but I never actually saw her on the plane or ever again after that!

Dh saw an old friend in Amsterdam once, bumped into him at the airport and had a good chat for 20 mins.

We were in Cornwall a couple of years ago & bumped into a couple who we had know for years but lost touch with - in a random coffee shop in Penzance!

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 08/04/2021 10:37

Yes, next door neighbours in Paris and a school friend of DS’ in San Francisco!

Mumsnut · 08/04/2021 10:39

I remember a friend telling me she had just taken the plunge to sunbathe topless in the Sputh of France ... looked up and saw her boss

MagicMatilda · 08/04/2021 11:03

Yes! Bumped into my old boss in Times Square and then a cousin at JFK. Random

MargaretThursday · 08/04/2021 11:07

Yes. Went on holiday a couple of hundred miles away. Before we left on the final morning we had lunch part way back, in a small village, off the main road, in a café that there were two other families in. We live 5 minutes walk away from one of them.

2021mumma · 08/04/2021 11:10

I saw someone from school when I was skiing down a mountain in Romania and had stopped to clear my goggles of steam! She had also stopped at same point. So random.

chatw00 · 08/04/2021 11:16

Yes... was in Paris with my Mum, years ago, and bumped into someone I used to work with, outside the Sacre-Coeur!

Tehmina23 · 08/04/2021 11:17

Yes, I was getting off a plane in Majorca with my sister when a woman called out my name... it was one of my Aunties & an Uncle I hadn't seen for years!

Also waiting for luggage in Crete & bumped into an Egyptian doctor I used to work with.

AdoptedBumpkin · 08/04/2021 11:19

Not very exciting but saw some neighbours from London in North Wales. They owned a holiday home near our guest house.

Wallabyone · 08/04/2021 11:22

This has happened to me a silly number of times-it's so strange!
I had a pupil tap me on a plane to say hi.
I met an old school friend at the top of a volcano in Italy.
I bumped into some family friends in Rome.
And an old friend of my dad's at the airport in NYC 😂

CrazyHorse · 08/04/2021 11:41

A college saw me when I was on holiday at the other end of the country and came running down the street yelling my name. I totally ignored him at first because I thought he must be mistaken. I then introduced him to DH, but was so taken aback couldn't remedy his name. Blush There are only 20 of us in my workplace, and he was the only male so it shouldn't have been difficult!

I also bumped into an old friend in Prague when we were bothered on a long weekend, and someone from school randomly wandered over for a chat when I was spending the night alone in Heathrow having missed my flight the night before. He was a bit of an odd ball, but it was nice to see a friendly face.

I saw a braying mum who used to talk to me during my kids swimming lessons at watergate bay. She was at the waters edge yelling encouragement at her kids who were body boarding. I avoided her.

Fleurchamp · 08/04/2021 11:42

My DH always bumps into people he knows, mainly from through work.

South Africa - bumped into a guy he worked with in London, he proved handy as his wife's family owned a winery there 🍷 Grin

Loads in the US - he used to travel there a lot but it seemed whenever we were at an airport he would be tapped on the shoulder.

Devon - he randomly mentioned that someone he knew from Uni went on to become a policeman in Devon. We turned a corner and there was a police car with said acquaintance inside.

HelenHywater · 08/04/2021 11:47

Yes bumped into an acquaintance in India when I was doing my gap year. We travelled together for a bit and became really close friends.

Bumped into a friend of my dds (and her parents) in New York a couple of years ago. Just completely randomly on the street.
