@BeckyRac

Not me but while we were in Devon my mum bumped into someone she knew from the north west.
We had similar in a Devon too. Visiting my parents in a quiet little village (not touristy at all). Went to the local shops with the children and bumped into one of their secondary school teachers! Was very strange.

Also when I was younger I went on holiday with my friend abroad. When there we met two other girls who were from the same county as us. We spent two weeks together, but lost touch after (pre mobile phone days). Then 3 months later the girls turned up at the nightclub we worked at. Had a catch up but again no more contact. The following year I was in hospital and one of the girls was in the cubicle next to me!
And finally, 3 years later I started a new job, and guess we go was there - the same girl again. It was so very random and funny each time we met!

A few times. Once in Bruges we met a family with children’s friends from school. The adults came for supper and drinks aboard our boat and the children disappeared off into the centre to dine on chips and giggles. It was lovely.

Once in the Lakes atop Catbells we met someone my husband worked with and her family. We arranged to meet later for ice cream, tea and dipping in the river at Grange. It actually helped cement an enduring friendship.

Once on the Isle of Wight I met a woman I trained with many years previously. She had been a friend, but life took us away from each other and we’d only had Christmas card contact since. It helped re-establish our friendship and we do see each other a couple of times a year again now.

Not on an actual holiday, but many times at airports all over the world.

My mum has fond memories of the neighbours/friends she would bump into at the airport when she was travelling alone with all the children and suitcases and changing bags and crying babies and toddlers... I now think ‘those poor people dragged in to help’ but my mum gladly accepted any help she was offered (didn’t hesitate to say yes please, grab this kid and those bags and head to gate 34 Grin) and tbh an extra pair of hands are good when you’re travelling solo with children in tow.

My uncle went to America for a year and went in to a small shop in a smallish town.
The muslim shop owner served him and said “you have got to be from X” (small town in NW England, accent only identifiable from people around there). It turned out my uncle and the shopkeeper’s nephew were classmates.

I had been on a training course for a week with a group of teachers. I met one woman and we got chatting and it turned out we were both get married that summer. Had a chat about various different parts of the wedding, dress, reception, honeymoon etc and it turned out she was honeymooning in Cuba too.

Fast forward to the honeymoon, we were out for a stroll in the grounds of our hotel and there she was with her new husband! Had a nice chat.

I booked at trip to Rome on a whim, turned out it Was the same time as the junior clergy retreat to Rome with the bishop. It was great. Got to do loads of stuff I'd never have been able to do otherwise.

Four times! Once on a plane to Paris, once at a resort in Sardinia, once on a campsite/beach in France, at a resort in Tenerife. I often wonder how often it nearly happens.

BoKatan · 08/04/2021 08:09

Not exactly, but I went to university about 300 miles from my home. A friend at university did some volunteering in Tanzania during the summer holidays and met another volunteer there from my home town and both managed to establish that they knew me.

A uni acquaintance on a sand dune in the Namib desert. Probably around 9/10 years after graduating.

I remember reading (possibly on here) about a woman on a beach holiday with her DH who decided to go topless for the first time ever. Day 1, walked down to have a dip in the sea and bumped into some neighbours who engaged them in a long conversation while she nearly melted from embarrassment. The very thought of it brings me out in a cold sweat!

fairydustandpixies · 08/04/2021 08:20

Yep - in Tunisia and in Cornwall.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/04/2021 08:20

We once met our postman in the Lakes (we lived in Suffolk at the time).

We went on holiday to Austria and bumped into my dad's best friend from when he was nine - they hadn't seen each other for thirty years and lived on opposite sides of the world!

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 08/04/2021 08:21

This seems to happen me all the time! Colleagues in Portugal at the same time as me and dh two years in a row (different colleagues), friends in the Canaries a couple of times, kids from my kids' school in Orlando. The two funniest were when three families from our small cul de sac when I was a child ended up in Majorca at the same time. It was June and so we were all only starting to play out again as it had been a wicked winter and spring when we discovered it. At first I think all three sets of parents were thinking oh sh!t but it ended up being so much fun, even for the adults. The other funny one was when I was living in Sydney and my mum and sister came to visit and in the same afternoon we walked into our old babysitter when we were kids and the parish priest....

yellowdenim · 08/04/2021 08:24

A few times. Once in Majorca an old school friend I hadn’t seen for years was staying in the same resort. Then travelling to Cape Verde saw an acquaintance on the plane out and back. Also happened in Cornwall.

Hottubtimemachine · 08/04/2021 08:26

All the time, I’d say at least 50% of the time we bump into someone we know. In Orlando once it was literally like being at home- seemed like everywhere we went we saw someone!

Anon778833 · 08/04/2021 08:26

No. But my ‘friend’ stalked me and turned up at the same hotel I was going to with my children a few years ago (the so called friend is a man).

NeedToKnow101 · 08/04/2021 08:27

Yes. I bumped into my sibling in Spain, and someone from school in Cyprus.

tiredteacher100 · 08/04/2021 08:31

When I was a child our manufacturing town's factories all shut at the same time for a 'holiday fortnight'. Thats when you had to go on your summer hols. Bumping into people on the beach somewhere like Weymouth was pretty normal back then!

autumnboys · 08/04/2021 08:34

Yes, on top of Snowdon. My sister bumped into someone in New York.

wannabebetter · 08/04/2021 08:36

Yes, interrailing with 2 friends bumped into a couple of lads from my local pub on a beach in Corfu! (We may have shagged them then had v awkward time back home)....

AndPeekaboo · 08/04/2021 08:36

I was in Florida and had just been on a ride in Disney, came out the exit and someone tapped me on the shoulder and said excuse me are you the Tesco girl?
It was a customer I'd recently served and we talked about how we were both going to Florida in a few days. We just happened to be on the same ride at the same time

Juanbablo · 08/04/2021 08:37

Once I saw someone who lived in our village while on holiday in Devon, 4 hours away from home. As a child it seemed we always saw someone my parents knew at the airport or on holiday in Menorca or Dorset.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 08/04/2021 08:38

Yes, twice in Disney World Florida which doesn't sound odd but when you think there are around 50,000 people in the park and it is 107 acres in size, fairly slim chances. Two different trips and a different set of parents each time who I knew from the playground.

Sellandtravel · 08/04/2021 08:39

Yes in Disneyland Florida!

boredinthouse · 08/04/2021 08:39

Yes, my dentist at the airport in Majorca.

Peppaismyrolemodel · 08/04/2021 08:40

We bumped into a friend of my parents whilst on our honeymoon.. different part of the country, strolling through a national trust property, someone I actually hadn’t seen for years.

I spent the rest of the honeymoon impulsively checking over my shoulder in case my mother had sent more spies.. 🤦‍♀️
