Not me but while we were in Devon my mum bumped into someone she knew from the north west.

Yes - at the top of the cable car in Dubrovnik, another time in Zante, once in Spain too - happens loads!

Archersandlemonade · 07/04/2021 23:15

rosy71 · 07/04/2021 23:16

When I was a kid and in Torquay on holiday, we bumped into someone I went to school with.
I was in Macey's in New York, going up the escalator when I saw one of the directors from work coming down, we crossed within a foot of each other.
Most recently we were in the Isle of Wight when my son ran into his friend from school.

I went abroad for the first time ever when I was 21. I actually worked 2 jobs at the time, 1 in a private day nursery and 1 in a newsagents.

The second evening we were there, we went into the local town for food and I bumped into a family that sent their child to my nursery as we left the restaurant.

A couple of days later, we went to watch the Pirates show (if you've been to Majorca, you'll know Wink) and a regular customer from the newsagents got brought up onto the stage by the cast Shock I bumped into her afterwards and she was just as surprised to see me there!

DH met a lad he went to primary school with in Darwin. That was a bit odd. It also turned out that a woman I work with is married to his childhood next door neighbour. For context, she's from Wigan and DH grew up in Aberdeen.

Centerparcs, waiting for the outdoor laser tag to start and someone in the family arriving greeted S2 by name... it was his french teacher.

To be fair, the place is only 80 miles across the Pennines, so the likelihood of two groups from our town being there at the same time is pretty high!

rainbowlou · 07/04/2021 23:19

Met a family from our child’s school in a shoe shop hundreds of miles away on holiday when we realised his flip flops didn’t fit and had to stop to buy some!

ShanghaiDiva · 07/04/2021 23:21

Yes
Bumped in to one of our neighbours at Disneyland in Tokyo and some other friends we knew from China on a really quiet beach in Hoi An.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/04/2021 23:21

Yes but it's very common here. I was in NYC and bumped into people from Cayman, likewise was in Miami just before lockdown and got chatting to other Cayman people I knew at the Cheesecake Factory in Dadeland.

I'd be more surprised if I bumped into them in an obscure part of the world but you're almost guaranteed to see people from here if you to to Denver, NYC, Miami, South Carolina!

Northernsoullover · 07/04/2021 23:21

I bumped into an old colleague in Gran Canaria and the DJ I worked with in a bar from home. Different times. Not me but a colleague went to Australia and bumped into one of her managers in a lift in Sydney Shock. They didn't know each other were visiting at the same time as the manager wasn't the type to exchange pleasantries.

AgeLikeWine · 07/04/2021 23:22

Yes, many years ago I bumped into someone I went to school with while looking round the Bayeux Tapestry.

Zancah · 07/04/2021 23:23

Yep, first day of holiday in Spain. Got to the beach, kids run off towards the sea - returning moments later, excitedly exclaiming Muuuuummm, Jamie is here!
I didn't much care for "Jamies" parents so it was not good news! Typically, we bumped into them several times a day for the entire holiday and frequently had to make polite small talk.

When I was a kid we were holidaying at the opposite end of the country and bumped straight into one of my best friends staying in the same Haven holiday park.

Scarby9 · 07/04/2021 23:23

Several times.

My brother's headmaster on our first ever holiday abroad. I don't know whose holiday was more ruined!

A friend, who I would see every couple of weeks for coffee with a group of friends. My best friend and I got a last minute flight only to a Greek Island in October, right at the end of the season, and got a room in a private house on arrival. There was a big poshish hotel at the end of our road with a private beach area, loungers and parasols etc. We were lying on our towels nearby when this other friend spotted us from her lounger. We spent the rest of the week piggy-backing on her holiday, enjoying their loungers and pool with them!

Whythesadface · 07/04/2021 23:26

Chatting to someone, .
Where do you live? Small village outside town in X.
Oh. I went to school in X. Which village? Oh just outside X village.
I looked laugh and said z road?
They lived in our old house.
I did wonder if travel agent had sent something, and they had booked because of it, but I never asked.

Zancah · 07/04/2021 23:27

Oh yeah, another time our school had slightly different holiday dates to most others. I booked Center Parcs for a steal because of it. I was well pleased … until I got there. 9 (yes nine) other families from our school had clearly had the same idea. It was ok, they were mostly people I liked! Grin

MouseholeCat · 07/04/2021 23:27

I've had 2 of these. The first, my family were on holiday in some small islands in the UK and the best friend of my best friend's brother and his family were there.

The second was weirder. I was sat at La Guardia airport travelling for a business trip and bumped into a friend who was on a volunteering trip at the time. Neither of us live in New York, so the odds of that happening were totally crazy.

LER83 · 07/04/2021 23:28

Went on holiday to Tenerife with my then boyfriend, we were 18. Second day in we discover 3 lads we know from college are staying on the floor below. There went my nice romantic holiday! To be fair they were a good laugh!

TippledPink · 07/04/2021 23:29

Yes saw my daughter's dance friend and her mum at Volcano Bay in Orlando Florida. Year before last. Haven't seen them since!

Mumtothelittlefella · 07/04/2021 23:30

Went with DH and DC to Corfu a few years ago. Sat having a lovely afternoon at The Whitehouse when a man came over to us. He knew my DH from working in a similar industry but they had only met once or twice. Turns out the chap had found my DH’s wallet in the gents, recognised my DH’s name from the bank card and came to look for us. DH wasn’t even aware it was missing. Didn’t notice the man before then, and off he went as quick as he’d arrived. Odd but very pleased our paths had crossed at that point in time.

GCAcademic · 07/04/2021 23:31

Yes, someone from work in a remote wildlife reserve in India of all places.

SingingInTheShithouse · 07/04/2021 23:31

Sort of, though I didn't know them

I was in Mombasa a couple of weeks after my grandads funeral, I put my camera on the bar whilst I ordered a drink & an older guy with a thick Durham accent commented on my camera & recognising his accent as from my home town, I chatted with him.

It only turned out that he used to work with my grandad & worked the fairground in the nearest town when I was a little girl & he remembered me going to the fair with my granddad as a girl

Another on a beach in Antigua... a woman walks past with a carrier bag from a small independent boutique in the part of london I lived in at the time. We shouted out the name & she came over to talk to us. Turned out she'd just moved in 3 doors away from us

MrsPsmalls · 07/04/2021 23:32

God yes! Teenage ds recently widowed form tutor. Bought him a drink the first day and fully planned not to speak to him again, but as he was holidaying alone and ds found this terribly sad, ds kept inviting him to do stuff with us.

CarrieMoonbeams · 07/04/2021 23:34

Yup, years ago, DH and I were on a weekend break in the Lake District, about 150 miles away from home.

We went in to a pub for lunch, and bumped in to two people who worked in my office. They were both married to other people. The woman looked absolutely horrified when she saw me. I introduced them both to DH and then just carried on as normal, but she was obviously so embarrassed that they left really quickly.

We saw them another 3 times in that one weekend! When we were back at work, I didn't mention it - to them or to anyone else - but they always looked a bit wary when they saw me.

Quincejam · 07/04/2021 23:41

Yes several times - ex-work colleague of DH in Yorkshire, fellow cricket team
player walked past our apartment in Corfu and a couple of others. Became a bit of a joke trying to guess who we would see every time! Had Jimmy White on our flight last year to Canada and Andy Ruiz Jnr on the way back!
