What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

The original Ivy restaurant in London. Went once for a special occasion- I’ve had far better meals elsewhere & the service was impersonal

Well this might turn out to be quite a disappointing thread as I've always wanted to go there too!

Bloody expensive wilkos! I'd not say the Range posh but not wilkos level.

AnaisNun · 24/03/2021 19:10

Soho House
The Groucho
My auntie and uncle, who we grew up being told were “very posh” but who I now realise had very normal middle management jobs and a nice detached new build house.

Yankee candles

That said, I thought galaxy chocolate was posh growing up so perhaps I'm not the best placed to judge

SylvanianFrenemies · 24/03/2021 19:12

Viscount biscuits. But I learned the truth early on!

It was def marketed as a posh version of Cadburys when it first came out so I can see that!

I bought some Fortnum's tea the other day. It's ok but could have had equivalent from any shop imo.

Floralnomad · 24/03/2021 19:15

I thought The Range was like Aldi / Lidl for homeware , that’s always the impression I’ve had on the rare occasion I’ve been in one .

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/03/2021 19:15

Forrero Roche used to be my mums fav chocolate for birthdays/Christmas, thought it was dead posh and seem to remember them being quite expensive, not found in the pound shop like now!

Oh oh! Hot tubs!

The HEIGHT of posh- and a bit sort of glam-(to my mind) when I was a teenager.
Now all I see is a virulent soup in which to dip a suburban paunch.

TechnoDino · 24/03/2021 19:15

Fish knives Grin
Food served in serving bowls in the middle if the table.
Wine with a meal!

StrumpersPlunkett · 24/03/2021 19:16

I always thought ready meals were posh because my Aunty who never cooked always had ready meals.

SweetMandarin · 24/03/2021 19:16

Sheba.

I didn't realise carveries were a thing, thought it was a clever idea my local pub had 😂

Mixer taps. Height of poshness. Also being able to drink a fizzy drink whenever you want as a child.

FizzyPink · 24/03/2021 19:19

Going in a limo, now the height of tackiness

Nellie850 · 24/03/2021 19:19

Limos!

Kitchen roll. It was seen as the greatest of extravagances by my frugal parents. I buy it now and I love it. Every time I use it I feel joyful at the convenience it offers.

minniemoocher · 24/03/2021 19:22

Eating out in general, it was very rare when I was growing up, perhaps twice a year in the evening plus maybe a sandwich shop trip or wimpy on our birthdays (days out meant flasks and sandwiches in the 70's)

The range is definitely a cheap and cheerful home wares shop, ours has an Iceland inside too, makes Aldi look posh!

ThePontiacBandit · 24/03/2021 19:22

When we started going out, DH thought I was posh because I had cake forks! Grin

I always thought Ferrero Rocher were really posh...not sure why. Certainly not something we had at home growing up. Didn’t they weren’t until my 20s!

Lol your parents were right. Technically we are high earners but I don't feel like I can afford kitchen roll 😂
minniemoocher · 24/03/2021 19:23

Should have mentioned the only evening place ever visited was the Bernie Inn
