What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Vote for Range rovers here too... I see them everywhere!

Very few actually own them - they are all on credit .

Going to TGI Fridays as a child

Another one who was bitterly disappointed by The Ivy. Dine out regularly and often at ‘high end’ type places. It was literally a canteen as pp upthread said and not a particularly good one. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say I’ve had more enjoyable school dinners.

Sobranie pastel coloured cigarettes. I though I was so posh and at the height of sophistication when I saved up enough to buy those in my teens.

Also, drug taking was seen as posh when I was young. Only those with money could afford it.

Marbella.
New houses
White Range Rovers
Watches featuring ‘designer‘ clothing brands.

Thornton's chocolates. Mumsnet has firmly disabused me of that notion.

Pampas grass. Even if you had pampas grass in the front garden of the smallest traced house, it was very posh.
I thought pampas grass in the front garden meant the residents were swingers😂😂

Candles are such a racket !
You can keep your Neom and Yankee Candles , l give you the House Of Trudon who sell candle a that’s £450 and smells of the wooden floors at Versailles.
They also have a candle that smells of moss on a convent wall.
Now that’s reet posh that !

Carrot batons! When I cut my carrots in batons I thought I was a proper Lady

Garliccoriander · 24/03/2021 20:28

As a child in the sixties eating out a rarity. I thought knickerbocker glories were posh.

Christmasjoy · 24/03/2021 20:30

Going in friends parents car and they had a big tub if chewing gum that they kept in the car. I thought they must have money to burn to have special chewing gum for the car!

rc22 · 24/03/2021 20:30

I used to think Ferrero Rother were posh and Thorntons.

LagganBubble · 24/03/2021 20:30

Bayliss & Harding!

Avocado. Went to my friend's house as a teenager and hadn't even heard of it until I had some there, she and her parents were very well spoken so I thought of avocado as something posh people would eat. Now I wouldn't think of avocado as a posh food.

I second a previous poster who said about having food in serving bowls in the middle of the table at a meal. Again that just didn't happen at my house, but it was something that happened at friends' houses.

Having a kitchen big enough to put a table in and eat in. Again, not something I think now.

This is a really interesting thread OP Smile

When I was younger, Cafe Rouge seemed impossibly posh, because they had gold decals on the window proclaiming that they did "frites" and "dejeuner".

Doing your whole food shop at M&S, not just buying a few nice puddings.

Pink champagne!

Candies and jumpers from shops not hand knitted.

Coleslaw in a tub.

Vienetta.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/03/2021 20:31

We loved the old Ivy; prefer Murano after Covent Garden now.
Tartan bows on Christmas trees - well they were in the 80s.

VienneseWhirligig · 24/03/2021 20:33

Working in London. I felt the business when I got a job which required travelling to London regularly. I still love it but its definitely not posh Grin

mothtoaflame · 24/03/2021 20:33

A girl at school thought she was posh as she had a chandelier in her bedroom and always talked about it. I hate them now.

EveningOverRooftops · 24/03/2021 20:35

@msgloria

Buying all your family's clothes from Next (although to be fair it is was a more aspirational brand 20 years ago than it is now)
Didn’t you have to pay for the catalogue too? Hmm
