What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Indeed. See 'Darling Buds of May' and co. The Larkin family series (H E Bates) which illustrates the social reversals of the time with Pa Larkin in his Rolls and impoverished artistos wandering through, hoping for crumbs from the bounteous Larkin table.

@Wildern yes, DD would always be generously told to, "help yourself to tea and coffee and grab something to eat if you haven't had breakfast" as they rushed off to rehearsals in a flurry of toast crumbs, orange juice puddles and spilt jam when she arrive but she always arrive home ravenous for lunch as she said she'd have to have not eaten for several days before she'd contemplate eating anything there! Grin
I remembered her stories a few years later when I attended a charity lunch (I'm not the charity lunch type as a rule but a rather grand lady in my book group persuaded us and it was a very good cause so I took a day's AL and went) The arty mother (was full of, "county"types) was there pressing her contributions to the feast (wasn't her house but she was on the committee apparently) which were all meat based so I became, "vegetarian" to my shame for the day. Shame because my other DD and my DS's GF are both veggie and I do respect their principles but I'm weak and can't give up my Sunday roast or bacon butties!
I suppose I meant I was surprised at the house mistress's reaction to DD's fastidiousness (we lived on a tight budget and real butter was a treat not to be contaminated for others as two packs a month was my limit!) I suppose she equates to the governess in your narrative though, which underlines the fact that wasn't a, "posh" boarding school! Grin

Spa treatments
Thrown in an overheated photo booth with a plastic bag of mud and told to get on with it

Quickies wet wipes. We only had them for going on holiday - normal days out were a damp flannel in a sandwich bag
And I LOVED Berni Inns. The Irish coffee, so sophisticated
