What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

I always thought the lady who says in the advert "Ambassador, with the Ferrero Roche you are really spoiling us!" was being very sarcastic because she was peed off that there weren't any butties or at the very least a cheese and pineapple hedgehog available at his party.

@Decorhate

The original Ivy restaurant in London. Went once for a special occasion- I’ve had far better meals elsewhere & the service was impersonal
Yep, I was so disappointed. I didn’t like the area of London it’s located in and the interior of the restaurant felt poky and dreary. The staff were great but tried to whisk us in and out in 45mins (3 people having dinner). Try the Manchester Ivy - much more what I was expecting - a bit of glam.

Showing my age here, but first visit to meet soon to be MiL, I was very nervous, she was clearly posh as she:
Had a car
She had a home phone
She had a colour tv in the lounge AND A TV IN HER BEDROOM. Mind blown.

Tbf, she was exceptionally cool 😁

Newchances · 24/03/2021 19:47

Vienettta here too - we only ever has jt at Christmas!

Also serving dishes, food in the middle of the table type meals still seem posh to me lol

happytobemrsg · 24/03/2021 19:50

Having more than one car in a household
Going to Florida on holiday
Buying your food shop at M&S
Taking clothes to the dry cleaners

BrownFootStool · 24/03/2021 19:53

Vienetta

The original London ivy is posh because it’s not

People go dressed up expecting fancy food, and are then disappointed because it’s full of people in jeans eating shepherds pie

It’s like that bit in The Crown when Thatcher turns up in a ballgown and the royal family are sitting around in tweed eating sandwiches Wink

No, there's a difference between understated/relaxed posh and just a bit crap. We are "foodies" (hate that word!) and eat in very nice restaurants regularly and The Ivy was just not good. It obviously cash's in on its reputation as where the old media/movie types used to eat but that doesn't mean it's a good experience! Oh, and we were wearing jeans and raincoats when we ate there - we didn't go wearing evening dresses and fur coats! grin]

TrialOfStyle · 24/03/2021 20:00

Haha, nearly all of these listed.

My inclusions:
All inclusive holidays
Just holidaying abroad - especially outside of Europe
Growing up - new build houses. Slightly older - old houses. Now I realise the age of house has nothing to do with poshness or value in general.
Red wine
Tapas
Sushi
Olay moisturisers

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/03/2021 20:01

Second eating out. When I was little we did it as a family maybe 2 or 3 times a year. We all got dressed up to do it.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/03/2021 20:02

Oh ive been to The Ivy - its not great.

Abelard40 · 24/03/2021 20:02

Clinique

Literallynoidea · 24/03/2021 20:03

Agree the Ivy is not posh. Nor ever was tbh - just a canteen for actors.

Now it's a slightly more expensive version of Cote. I think the food is better in Cote.

LemonRoses · 24/03/2021 20:04

Growing up there was so much I coveted. A doorbell was high up on the list.

AngieBolen · 24/03/2021 20:06

Clinique used to have those slidey things to tell you which product you needed. It was definitely posh when I was a teen. Grin

TrialOfStyle · 24/03/2021 20:06

Also my best friend had a huge kitchen table (as well as a dining table) AND a wine cooler. That was proper posh to me (we only had a rubbish kitchen bar and nobody even drank wine in my house!)

Loopyloututu2 · 24/03/2021 20:07

I agree with you - we visit Cote in Chester regularly and I always enjoy it.

AngieBolen · 24/03/2021 20:07

Brown shag pile carpets. So posh in the 70s.

AngieBolen · 24/03/2021 20:09

Pampas grass. Even if you had pampas grass in the front garden of the smallest traced house, it was very posh.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 24/03/2021 20:10

@carnyvahr

Kitchen roll. It was seen as the greatest of extravagances by my frugal parents. I buy it now and I love it. Every time I use it I feel joyful at the convenience it offers.
Yes yes to kitchen roll. I don’t buy it for DH and he wishes I would. I’ll spend £23 on a bottle of wine but Kroll feels like the most ridiculous extravagance.
Itsmemaggie · 24/03/2021 20:10

Chicken Kievs. My friend’s patents always had them for dinner parties and I thought they were the height of poshness.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 24/03/2021 20:11

Agree with Yankee candles! Even now my mum would think they are the height of candle purchases. She would be horrified if I told her how much my neom candle was.
