What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

@carnyvahr

Kitchen roll. It was seen as the greatest of extravagances by my frugal parents. I buy it now and I love it. Every time I use it I feel joyful at the convenience it offers.
Yes ! Me too.

Ribeana. The wealthy kids used it drink it back in the day. We had water or maybe cheap versions. It’s not quite the same now...

I thought the Waldorf was a bit shit. Very busy, horrid metal dishes, staff weren’t anything special.

@Mn753

Cake forks are posh
Definitely not posh, I have some from Ikea and love them. 'My kids use them when they eat cakes, but we are really not in any way posh
MsIreneWinters · 24/03/2021 20:39

Chambourcy chocolate mousse

bofski14 · 24/03/2021 20:39

Doorbells. I thought anyone with a working doorbell was very posh. Also, another vote for Ribena here. And proper Crayola crayons.

HHSchultz · 24/03/2021 20:40

This will sound nuts, when I was a child I thought all English people were poshGrin

Figrollface · 24/03/2021 20:40

So much!
As a child/teen
Having more than two TV Chanel's, having a second toilet/bathroom, American teens with phones in bedrooms, central heating, drinking out of glasses.
As an adult, having a selection of alcohol in the house all year around and not just Christmas, having a credit card and regular hairdresser and beautician appt.

Volunteering at our local theatre.
Horse riding.
Am.Dram.
The school coach (bus) home.
My mother insisted I take part because we’d moved from the inner city to a semi rural village.
She was over compensating for her own mother’s lack of involvement and encouragement in her own life.
Mum read Archeology and Anthropology at Lucy Cavendish 10years ago. She was a contestant on University Challenge.
Let’s aspire to be better rather than posh which seems to equate to ‘ how the other half lives’.

drainrat · 24/03/2021 20:41

The Royal Enclosure at Ascot.

First Class on British Airways.

Laduree macarons were everything I’d dreamed they’d be though.

Cactus1982 · 24/03/2021 20:41

Going skiing.

TheDudesmummy · 24/03/2021 20:43

I grew up in South Africa, and British chocolates were posh. I thought Maltesers were the height of sophistication, and saved my pocket money for them (they are way too sweet for me now).

Tillytwilight · 24/03/2021 20:45

Jacuzzi baths
Ensuite bathrooms
Water beds
Mercedes
Cut crystal

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 24/03/2021 20:45

Having your takeaway delivered - considered the height of decadence. I never had a takeaway delivered until after I'd left home, and it felt like a great novelty. Even now DF would sooner spend £2 on petrol than a £1 delivery fee.

Clothes with very large designer labels splashed up them

Cocaine - according to DF, it was a sign you have too much money

Wearing less than 3 jumpers indoors in midwinter (i.e. putting the sodding heating on)

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/03/2021 20:46

Oh ive thought of another! Going in a taxi

Tessateacup · 24/03/2021 20:47

Eating out because it was expensive when i was young; coffee in a cafetière always looked very sophisticated; olives and extra virgin olive oil because of the associations with foreign travel; years ago dishwashers cost a ton of money to use = posh!

Windchangeface · 24/03/2021 20:47

Oooh I grew up pretty poor so have loads of these!!

Holidays to Spain
Home bars/hot tubs
Landrovers (unless you’re actually working land)
American fridge freezers
Prosecco
Skiing (I mean it can be posh but it’s also cold and shit)
Fancy nails
Bottomless brunch
Sainsbury’s
Chinese takeaways

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 24/03/2021 20:47

@rjacksmiss

Macarons
Not to be confused with macaroons, which are Scottish, coconutty and not posh. May have made that mistake in a posh place once...
Dreamponytail · 24/03/2021 20:50

Plain rather than patterned carpet was posh. (Hard to imagine now but back in the day most if not all carpets were patterned in the downstairs living areas to hide the dirt, I believe.)

School friends who went to proper hairdressing salons rather than having a mobile hairdresser or their mum doing it (badly. Nothing against a mum cut but not if they are shit with scissors).

Paper umbrellas in drinks.

Having a little tray near the front door for keys and spare change instead of dumping it all on the side.

pictish · 24/03/2021 20:50

Next was considered rather posh when I was a wee girl. A local beauty got into modelling and ended up in the Next catalogue, yep the one you had to pay for, and our town lost its mind over it. Next was true accolade. Funny because it’s a polyester shitshow now.

ilovepixie · 24/03/2021 20:52

Going on holiday abroad
Pure orange juice
Shopping in marks and Spencer
Carpet that went all the way to the walls

DailyMaui · 24/03/2021 20:54

when I was at school friend had two balconies on her council flat. We though that was the height of posh and called her "two balconies Tina."

blisstwins · 24/03/2021 20:55

Shrimp cocktail

(I am American).

Anniegetyourgun · 24/03/2021 20:56

Soft toilet roll.

Don't ask.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 20:56

A dishwasher
Foreign holiday
More than one kind of spoon eg soup spoons and dessert spoons
Napkins
Napkin ring
Platters
Cold meats
Being offered an aperitif on arrival at a restaurant. (I declined not knowing what it was...thought it was an olive)

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/03/2021 20:57

We weren’t poor by any stretch but these things were always a marvel to me 😆😆😆...

After 8 Mints
Electric windows
Haagen Dazs
Floating candles
Leather sofas
Corner baths 🤣
Debenhams

dementedma · 24/03/2021 20:57

When we were small my mum used to say if her Premium Bond came up she would buy us nice knickers from Marks and Spencers!

I had a school friend who was well posh. Her house had a shower, a proper one not just rubber tubes on the taps and a microwave!! I had never seen one before.
