Tell me the name you love but can't use

After a conversation with friends we all have a name that we love but can't use for various reasons

Our examples are:

Jame- because an ex bil was called that and its weird to have a nephew with the same name as your ex husband

Lyra - friends parents ended up adopting a dog with that name

Iris- goes absolutely horribly with my surname

So tell me your names that you cant justifiably choose! Are you someone that loved the name myra but have a horrid aunt called it? Or have an impossible surname that combines awkwardly with a beautiful name?

OP posts:

Emma. I love it but did not work with our surname at all :(

IggyAce · 15/03/2021 15:40

My brother couldn’t use Emily, I had to point out it didn’t go with surname. It would have ended up a rhyming alliteration mouthful.

MsSquiz · 15/03/2021 15:41

I loved Lucy but it's DH's ex fiancée's name, so he vetoed it

I also loved Lyra but it sounds like one long noise with our surname

MaverickDanger · 15/03/2021 15:45

Cormac - DH has a cousin called it and thinks it’s too unusual to get away with using.

Tadhg - our surname begins with an “Er” sound.

ChimpyChops · 15/03/2021 15:46

James or Jamie - My husband (now ex) had a friend called James who I had slept with before meeting husband.

Rebecca - husband's ex-fiance.

My two favourite names.

Soubriquet · 15/03/2021 15:46

I like Maggie

But our surname is Smith...

I liked Eve too but I think one syllable names don’t go well with one syllable surnames

Worldgonecrazy · 15/03/2021 15:47

Myfanwy

Love the name but know what kids would do to it in school.

popcorndiva · 15/03/2021 15:47

Autumn..surname is Day so rules out lots of names like Holly etc but Autumn before I met my husband would have been my daughters name

MsTSwift · 15/03/2021 15:47

Augusta. Literally everyone else including dh hates. Fortunately not having any more kids!

RosieLemonade · 15/03/2021 15:52

Georgia - cousin's name
Alistair or Alexander - female cousin called Ali
Sienna - this was my favourite name for years but DD would have the same name as a known actress

mdh2020 · 15/03/2021 15:57

I love the Russian name Daria but someone pointed that our daughter would be called diarrhoea

LadyWhistledown · 15/03/2021 16:02

Aurelia - apparently it's the brand name of the coffee machine at DH's work 😕

beelzeboob · 15/03/2021 16:03

Etta
Because my DP is part of the English table tennis association

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 15/03/2021 16:04

I loved Alexa, Amazon ruined that one!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 15/03/2021 16:05

Conn - BIL’s name and he’d 100000% think we used it to honour him when we hadn’t 😂

Sullivan - Our Surname is another Irish name ending in “an” and it sounds like an estate agent when they’re combined.

littlemissminor · 15/03/2021 16:05

Oscar, our absolute favourite but DSIL beat us to it!

cingolimama · 15/03/2021 16:05

Vanya. I was forbidden to use this name by DD's godfather, who's a playwright.

ChristianGreysAnatomy · 15/03/2021 16:05

Isolde - just.too.romantic. I adore this name but i think it’s OTT for a pedestrian Home Counties family. The tragedy of my life. Grin

poorbuthappy · 15/03/2021 16:07

Cordelia - we have a 3 syllable surname and it was just too much
Hence why all 3 kids have short names.
But I am 3 syllable first name and last name. It's a mouthful.

Itsjustaride8w737 · 15/03/2021 16:18

Brent - everyone hates it!

Summertime21 · 15/03/2021 16:19

Megan, rhymes with surname

GreenBalaclava · 15/03/2021 16:37

Alistair - it has sad memories within my wider family

PattyPan · 15/03/2021 16:57

Sophia - it was the name I always had picked out for my future daughter but now it's my niece's name.
Max - our surname is an adjective that would be too weird with it.
Millicent - the nickname would be too close to SIL's name.
DP and I also have the same initial so we're probably going to avoid giving DC that initial as well otherwise it could get confusing on post etc.

SilverGlassHare · 15/03/2021 16:59

I always loved Henry but that’s my husband’s nephew’s name and he thought it would be weird to have two Henry Xxxx in the family.

TheBigBazookasOfBrendaBurgess · 15/03/2021 17:01

Fanny (always liked it thanks to Aunt Fanny).
