Tell me the name you love but can't use

After a conversation with friends we all have a name that we love but can't use for various reasons

Our examples are:

Jame- because an ex bil was called that and its weird to have a nephew with the same name as your ex husband

Lyra - friends parents ended up adopting a dog with that name

Iris- goes absolutely horribly with my surname

So tell me your names that you cant justifiably choose! Are you someone that loved the name myra but have a horrid aunt called it? Or have an impossible surname that combines awkwardly with a beautiful name?

Naomi. ExDH and I didn't agree on how it should be pronounced!

Windchangeface · 15/03/2021 17:04

Alice, it shares a nickname with our other child. They’d no doubt both be ‘Ali’ it would get very confusing for everyone.

Ikeatears · 15/03/2021 17:05

Zachary, it's my nephew's name. Lovely DSIL actually said she didn't mind but I felt it would be too weird for DMIL to have two grandsons with the same name. Plus they would have become Big Zac and Little Zac...

roarfeckingroarr · 15/03/2021 17:07

Fox! I wanted it as a middle name. I still want it.

CluelessHamster · 15/03/2021 17:07

Also there is a boys name that I had always, always intended to call my first born son but ExDH vetoed it completely. By the time DS2 came along, I suggested it as a middle name and Ex was fine with it... go figure!

I'm happy to have been able to include it somewhere as it is quite significant to me. It's odd to think it would have been DS1's first name though as, I can't imagine him with it now...

Notavegan · 15/03/2021 17:11

Don't want to say the name, but didnt use as was name of my bosses daughter and my co-workers wife. So already taken.

MissMatty2hats · 15/03/2021 17:14

@Twizbe are you a fellow Dale Grin

PattyPan · 15/03/2021 17:28

@MissMatty2hats I knew a man called Dale whose family tradition it was to use the parent's name as the middle name of the first child of each sex. He said he had a really hard time choosing a name that didn't end up sounding like a farm, so I feel for you Smile

LadyofMisrule · 15/03/2021 17:33

Verity. Because it was the name of a murder victim in one of my favourite books.

Ohjustboreoff · 15/03/2021 17:45

Love Isolde but DH is Trystan so EWW just wrong!
Also loved Grace but well.....

Tell me the name you love but can't use
FourEyesGood · 15/03/2021 17:46

Rosie - it was DH’s most significant ex, so he vetoed it for DD (understandably!).

TaraR2020 · 15/03/2021 17:48

Diana.

For obvious reasons!

lockdownbreakdown · 15/03/2021 17:49

Horatio. Rhymes with fellatio. Sad face.

Tiktokersmiracle · 15/03/2021 17:50

I wanted to call DD Isabelle. Loved the name. Was in my pregnancy bubble of everything being lovely.
Until DP reminded me his ex, and the mother of his much older DS, born way before me and him. Was also Isabelle. I would say at that point I barely thought of her as she a)lives abroad and b) DP didn't know anything about this child until they were 5 as she was a fling and naffed off home and when he tracked her down she said basically, eff off, nothing to do with you, he has a dad and knows nothing of you. So I've never met her.
That was the end of that name choice. Blush

pinkyredrose · 15/03/2021 17:52

Lyra - friends parents ended up adopting a dog with that name

Um, why is that a reason not to use it?

cricketmum84 · 15/03/2021 17:52

Isabelle - DH kept joking that the kids would ask "is a bell on your bicycle" so couldn't possibly use it after he had put that in my head!

cricketmum84 · 15/03/2021 17:53

@PattyPan pleeeease tell me your surname is power??

JMAngel1 · 15/03/2021 17:54

Lydia - everyone kept saying lid of your dustbin. not happy

Joshua Or Rory - never had a son.

keeganface · 15/03/2021 18:01

I loved Evie but my husband is a Liverpool fan and said it was too much like Everton 🙄

I liked Rory but we were put off with how it would be pronounced by some of my family

We picked Ruby which I love and was unusual at the time 14 years ago but no as much now.

PattyPan · 15/03/2021 18:01

@cricketmum84 sadly not as cool as that! If my surname were Power I'd be tempted to use Max if it didn't sound like a drain cleaner Grin It's more along the lines of Long, Small, White, Grey etc.

longtimemarried · 15/03/2021 18:02

When my daughter was born I wanted to call her Faye, but my husband pointed out that when she went to school she would probably be called Faye(sake), mmm so we opted for our second choice.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/03/2021 18:07

Carenza.

I had a boy and now I'm too old to have more children.

JosephineBaker · 15/03/2021 18:11

Joel. Always loved that name.

BronnauMawrion · 15/03/2021 18:15

Maggie.

Another thing ruined by Thatcher!

Mammyloveswine · 15/03/2021 18:16

Joseph...best man beat us to it!

Gabriel...adore it but did not work with our surname.

Also...Bertie (if I had another I'd just use it lol)
