Tell me the name you love but can't use

After a conversation with friends we all have a name that we love but can't use for various reasons

Our examples are:

Jame- because an ex bil was called that and its weird to have a nephew with the same name as your ex husband

Lyra - friends parents ended up adopting a dog with that name

Iris- goes absolutely horribly with my surname

So tell me your names that you cant justifiably choose! Are you someone that loved the name myra but have a horrid aunt called it? Or have an impossible surname that combines awkwardly with a beautiful name?

@Notavegan

Don't want to say the name, but didnt use as was name of my bosses daughter and my co-workers wife. So already taken.
I don’t understand, how long are you intending to have this job?
Notavegan · 15/03/2021 18:29

@Alsohuman a long time, it's a job for life type job. I've been there 12 years and it's a small team so we know each other well.

Cecily. Loved it but too close to my niece Emily for comfort.

ZoeCM · 15/03/2021 18:35

We love Isabella, Ruby, Charlotte (my favourite) and Sophia, but they're all just too popular. We didn't want our daughter to be one of five with the same name in her year.

Tibtab · 15/03/2021 18:37

Persephone, just think that it would be one of those names that no one could spell.

ZoeCM · 15/03/2021 18:45

Another one: Chiara (Italian name pronounced "key-ah-ra"). We knew it would constantly be mispronounced, unfortunately.

Peachee · 15/03/2021 18:46

I love Polly and Primrose but her surname would be price.. not so sure about that.. I couldn’t be called Alison as my surname rhymes..

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/03/2021 18:49

April - my second choice for DD and I think it would have suited her better

For a boy - Linus. I love this name! But it is very uncommon, old-fashioned (was fairly popular in the US once) and people will probably just think of the Peanuts character with the security blanket!

Also Rohan for a boy. But I never had a boy!

Some future dogs may have these names.

CyranosBestie · 15/03/2021 18:49

Lenore. Would not inflict "everyone feels good in Lenor" on my child. Such a lovely name, why did they have to make a fabric softener with that name!

mamatocaptainchaos · 15/03/2021 18:49

Ivy- sister in law used for middle name

smallandimperfectlyformed · 15/03/2021 18:55

I wanted Lydia for my oldest but exDH said it was too similar to a woman in his family who had brought shame on the family- considering we were in London and they are in Nigeria it wasn't like we were going to see them much, if ever but I suppose the memories are there. We never had any boys but I love the name Noah and he vetoed that on the grounds that all Noahs he has met have been thieves! It's like that old joke, you never know how many people you don't like until you have to name a child!

CoffeeAndWinePlease · 15/03/2021 18:56

I’ve always wanted to call a son Frederick (Freddie/Fred for short) after my grandfather.
My DP has the surname West...Hmm

Makingnumber2 · 15/03/2021 19:03

Pearl
My husband vetoed it instantly Sad. I love it so much!

MintyCedric · 15/03/2021 19:04

I always loved Harriet and quite fancied Heathcliff (Heath for short).

Our surname began with H though, not that XH would ever have allowed Heathcliff in any case!

SimonJT · 15/03/2021 19:05

Tristan, I won’t get to name a child, but if I could and they were a boy that is what I would choose.

Aisha for a girl.

MintyCedric · 15/03/2021 19:05

For a boy - Linus. I love this name! But it is very uncommon, old-fashioned (was fairly popular in the US once) and people will probably just think of the Peanuts character with the security blanket!

We toyed with that for a boy, precisely because of the Snoopy connection...XH was a massive fan!

PolarnOPirate · 15/03/2021 19:07

Hazel, Heidi, Harvey, Harper. 2 syllable H surname so it sounds so twee.

Similarly Max, Lucas etc. They become Mack and Luca as the S sound gets merged into the surname. Annoying!

PolarnOPirate · 15/03/2021 19:07

Hayden too!

rooarsome · 15/03/2021 19:08

Joshua- cousin adopted a little lad called this a month before we had our boy
Max- love it but would sound utterly ridiculous with our surname Grin

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 15/03/2021 19:10

Isla is a very significant family name and I always wanted to use it. Now every second girl is called Isla!!

rach2713 · 15/03/2021 19:15

My husband want laura and middle name Ashley I could because I knew to Turks called that that weren't nice plus was the name of a shop. I also liked Willow for my last but he said no as it reminded him of a tree lol

Bells3032 · 15/03/2021 19:15

Love Edward but it's my late exs middle name.

We've picked zach if we have boy first and I've tried to persuade my husband on jason if we had a second but he vetoed it on the basis that people would think we are naming our kids after the power rangers (I'm not I just like the names)

MargaretThursday · 15/03/2021 19:24

@MsSquiz

I loved Lucy but it's DH's ex fiancée's name, so he vetoed it

I also loved Lyra but it sounds like one long noise with our surname

Dh vetoed Lucy because he said he wasn't calling any child after my teddy bear. Sad

Actually I don't think she would have suited Lucy anyway.

Serena1977 · 15/03/2021 19:25

Percy
Dh said ds would be teased, Percy Pig

Poppy
Dh said it was a dog's name not a human's

AgathaAllAlong · 15/03/2021 19:26

I love Alex but it's a significant ex's middle name. For some bizzare reason when I introduced him to my friends he decided to use his middle name - even though he is not known by Alex and I have always used his first name! I continued to use his first name and so do not associate the name Alex with him at all, but now can't use it for DC as my friends would think I'd named DC after the ex.

My top choice, though, would be Herbert. I adore the idea of a baby Herb. Unfortunate rhyme means I'd never actually use it....
